I just learned that Conan O’Brien has made arrangements to pay his staff who will be laid off by NBC as of Friday. About 80 production people — like talent bookers, producers, production assistants — will be taken care of by the Late Night host who is supposed to move to The Tonight Show in 2009. Sources tell me this is on a week-to-week basis for the moment until or if Conan, who’s a WGA member and got his start as a comedy writer, goes back to work. Obviously, NBC is dying for him to return to the air because its late night ratings for the repeats have tanked. None of the late night shows have been in production during the entire November sweeps and the networks have to give sponsors free spots or “give backs” at a cost of millions.
I’ll say this: it’s a great PR move by O’Brien as well as an incredibly nice thing to do. After all, he’s the least paid of the Big Three (including Letterman and Leno), and unlike Dave’s Worldwide Pants, which is generously paying its employees through at least the end of the year, Conan’s company Conaco doesn’t own Late Night. NBC does.
And while I’m on the topic of NBC’s late night hosts, I’m told that Carson Daly was probably going to lose his show if he didn’t return to work. Oh, like that would have been a great loss to humanity, much less television. It’s incredible the lousy publicity which Daly’s decision to cross the picket line is creating. After the news broke that Carson was soliciting scab jokes, several websites (here and here are two of them) have sprung up soliciting jokes about Daly, the nastier the better.
Meanwhile, where do things stand with Jay Leno who had been a ubiquitous figure handing out food to the WGA picketers? There are no plans at the present for him to pay his show’s production people who will be laid off by NBC as of Friday. As for returning to work, “I don’t see him running to cross the line. I get that,” an insider tells me. That’s because Leno is still really furious at Jeff Zucker for handing over The Tonight Show to Conan and isn’t exactly in the mood to do any favors for NBC Universal.

Wow! Talk about steppin’ up! That’s absolutely incredible! Of course Conan is a writer (and does he get residuals for “The Simpsons”?), that is “one of us” but this is a classy move and just great to see.
Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
Does anyone know if Conan & Dave paying his staff includes their writers?
Um, fine… Conan… great… WHAT THE HELL IS THE ALARM BELL ONE POST DOWN?
Didn’t we hear this story before about a different TV host?
PLEASE don’t tell me this is the “exclusive” post about the talks, is it? No. It can’t be.
Jay has been notoriously stingy with his writers…most notably, he’s never allowed the show to be submitted for best writing for the Emmy’s because he’s says he wants everyone to think that he writes the jokes. (obviously something that’s gone out the window with the strike) I doubt he’ll pony up any of his own money.
That’s nice of him. Now give us the news we *really* want to know, please.
yes im kind of suprised THIS is the big news.
Nikki, you are very funny!
Great move for Conan. Besides I khow he loves the check he gets for everytime Homer says “I call the big one Bitey. Not bad. As for Jay, I am sure that he and his writers are happy regarding winning the ongoing ratings war aside from winning any award.
Conan is a hero. Thanks for giving a s**t about the rest of us Conan. Your peers could learn alot about decency and ethics from you.
After 15 years Jay now truly is in the same position Johnny Carson was after 15 years with the Tonight Show. Carson hated NBC. Johnny loved to rake them over the coals any time he could. Now it’s Jay’s turn to make them pay.
And moving Conan to the Tonight Show and bumping Jay is the stupidest thing NBC has done since Moron Littlefield handled Carson’s “retirement”. Middle America has chosen Jay over Dave for 13 of 15 years. What makes NBC think Ma and Pa Kansas are yearning for Conan’s brand of NYC Cool at 11:30pm when they could have had Dave’s all these years too but chose not to watch? Somewhere in TV Heaven Johnny Carson is laughing…..
That sucks that Carson Daly is more concerned about his own job than anything else. I’m pretty sure he’s not hurting for cash. Definitely great about Conan and I really hope Jay Leno follows in Conan’s footsteps. Especially since I’m voting for Jay instead of Ellen in the best talk show host category for The People’s Choice Award, due to strike behavior. That’s very cool that David Letterman is also paying his staff as well.
It was only 4 years ago that Leno pulled everyone on the Tonight Show staff into a room and gave them $1000 for each year they had been with the show.
As much as I dislike Leno and his show, he has voluntarily given up his own $ before.
Jay doesn’t prevent the show to be considered for Best Writing — it’s just that they’ve never gotten a nomination! And I hear morale is so low over there. Jay may be pissed at Zucker, but he apparently doesn’t give a shit about his staff. At least that’s how his about to be laid off staff feel.
Whoa everyone, let’s slow down a bit with the Conan praise. Leno has been out to the picket line almost every single day since the strike started. Has Conan been to the line once? I’m asking you, once? And of course it’s CONAN who was the WGA member for years before he was in front of the camera. Where’s his support for the writers?
It’s great that his staff will be paid, but don’t think for a second that Conan’s people won’t get that money back from NBC. They’re banking the next 20 years on Conan, they’re not going to sour their relations with him by refusing to reimburse him. In fact, I’ll bet they’ve already agreed to reimbuse him and they’re letting the announcement be made this way for pro-Conan p.r. reasons.
Let’s all try to be a little less naive, okay?
I really think it’s Jay’s turn to step up and pay his staff, considering he makes WAY more than Conan does.
and i dont know what “julie” is talking about a few posts down, but the tonight show has submitted for the writing category in the emmy’s every single year. they’ve just never been nominated. and if jay wanted people to think he wrote his own jokes, he wouldnt have 15 writers’ names in the credits.
Anita,
Ever think about the fact that Carson might be looking out not only for his job, but for the hundred or so people on his staff, including striking writers, who wouldn’t have a job to come back to if he gets fired supporting the strike of a union he’s not even a member of? You know, the people who probably really are hurting for cash?
Julie better check her facts. Her comment is absolutely untrue about Leno, Emmys, and his relationship with his writers.

“Fact”? I think the word you were looking for is “improbablity.”
Conan and Jeff Ross are very rare people in this phony showbiz
world. Many thanks to you both and your ethics and for fighting for
your day laborers!
to gimme a break–Conan has supported the writers by STAYING OUT OFF THE AIR FOR 4 WEEKS!!!!!
Dear “Person” who wrote: to gimme a break–Conan has supported the writers by STAYING OUT OFF THE AIR FOR 4 WEEKS!!!!!
the only reason conan has stayed off the air is that letterman and leno have stayed off. if you think he would stay off the air for even one day longer if leno and/or letterman went back, then you’re clueless.
where is he on the picket lines??? he was a WGA member and working writer for years. where is his support? I’m still waiting.
Hey Gimme -
Whoa to you and your unverified conspiracy theories.
When it comes down to it, what’s more important – handing out doughnuts in a photo-op or making it possible for your staff to pay their mortgages? Who cares how Conan and Jeff Ross got it done? They’ve managed to keep the staff from being laid off AND show CONTINUED SUPPORT for the writers by refusing to bring the show back without them. What the hell more do you want?
Conan IS a member of the WGA, but he just wanted to make sure that the staff that was not getting paid during the strike, while the writers are for each rerun that airs, got taken care of.
He is a show runner so he is in an awkward position but i think that this is a good move.
