I detect a groundswell for Jeff Zucker as The Tonight Show's guest host. Or is it just that no one else wants to cross picket lines and sit in for strike sympathizer Leno? So forget whom you want to host, tell DHD whom you think would host and why.

Carl Icahn Now Wants ALL Of Lionsgate
Jay Leno rocks! Sure, his riding motorcycles and collecting classic cars is something my dad would do to remain hip, but standing up for unions? Can’t get cooler than that! Rock on, Jay, rock on!
Well, if anyone knows how to take things from first place to last place, it’s Jeff Zucker.
I want you to host, Nikki! You’re writing is always witty and you’ve been so great during this mess!!
NBC would go bankrupt from the powder budget needed to deshine Zucker’s chrome dome for HD.
Get Ellen to fill in. She’s already crossed the line, and her studio is in walking distance to the Tonight show.
What rhymes with Zucker…?
Hire Ellen. Don’t know if she is available but her attitude is willing.
Ellen, with Iggy as co-host.
Jay has always been one class act, and nobody who would cross a picket line can hold a candle to him. I can only imagine JULIE CHEN bolting past the picket lines for a new career opp….
…well “wannabees” are out, they’ll ruin their careers… gotta go with the “has-beens”. Maybe just rotate in some of the cast from The Surreal Life
Monday: Ron Jeremy.
Tuesday: Janice Dickenson.
Wednesday: Flavor Flav.
Thursday: Howard K. Stern & Larry Birkhead.
Friday: Nick Counter. (no need to pay him)
ZUCKER: A funny thing happened as I drove through the picket line today…
I think Arsenio Hall is available.
Perhaps Ellen will do it.
Ben Silverman will host THE TONIGHT SHOW because…for reasons that didn’t show up on his GE drug-test…he is actually up at that hour…and he can have his “buddy” Ryan Seacrest on as a guest. Yes indeed…Harvard and Tufts make idiots, too.
I trust everyone realizes that the AMPTP is using the superb staffs of every show and film impacted by their reluctance to negotiate– these peoples’ livelihoods – as a way to bring writers off the picket line and back to their jobs with zero compensation for internet reuse and/or original content. They want writers to take the blame for their refusal to negotiate a fair and reasonable contract. Can the AMPTP stoop any lower than this? Of course they can! There is not a writer on the picket line that wants any one of their coworkers to sacrifice their paychecks for their cause. The writers want to negotiate these issues even as I am writing this with the AMPTP and get back to work. The AMPTP is creating this misery, not the writers.
Men of integrity like Jay Leno put the AMPTP to shame. I commend Jay Leno for having the courage – the decency – to stand by his writers (for he is a writer first) and to also try to find a way to keep his unrivaled segment producers, musicians and administrative staff working during this difficult time. I’d say he was a hero and an example to the AMPTP and everyone in America – he is a man who deserves our respect, and his viewers’ and the WGA’s allegiance because he is trying to do the right thing all around.
This is not a time for guessing games. It is a time for writers, and Nikki Finke I mean you too, and the entertainment community to take this matter seriously (no jokes) and demand an end to this hostage crisis for writers, staffs, and actors/actresses. Negotiate AMPTP! And then we can all start laughing with Jay Leno on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO!
Semper Fi
George Lopez.
I’d like to see if this guy, who spends all his time moaning about how his people don’t have opportunity, get such an opportunity. I want to see if he’d justify crossing the line as an ethic advancement.
Mr. Zucker may have something going there. He should turn the Tonight Show into a REALITY show and have unknowns off the street host the show. There is a lot of talent out there who are not part of the old boys club.
And Johnny Carson is rolling over in his grave at the thought of how his show, his legacy is being handled.
Duh! It’s pretty obvious to me. One of the great comedic minds of our time, and already an NBC property:
Carson Daley.
No one can replace a class act like Leno. There is a reason the guy is #1 and it goes WAY beyond the fact that he’s the funniest guy on television. Sure, it’d be easy for him to continue collecting his paycheck but that fact that he stands by his team shows real character.
Jeff Zucker???!!!! The reason Jay resonates in such a big way is because people can relate to him. He IS an every day, average guy. Kudos to Jay for sticking up for his team. That kind of conviction is exactly WHY he is so loved.
Welcome to the Internet Age! How long can Hollywood preach Communism and practice Shark-Bait Capitalism before hypocracy becomes a revolution? We as writers should form a new union, “Financial Anarchy Local 620″, is now in session. Writers must Produce and Direct their own material and everyone become their own Studio for individual profits to be realized.
“Writer/Producer/Director/StudioHead” is now one Title for anyone in LA ready to reap the profits of Entertainment – rejoice and empowerment for the Intelligencia!
Nikki Finke – why are you asking this questions? Jay Leno is a stand up guy who has made the decision to support his staff (how many of you can say that about your boss). Why are you exacerbating an already difficult situation? Jay doesn’t need YOU second guessing his choice. What he needs, and his writers need, are our support.
“He should turn the Tonight Show into a REALITY show and have unknowns off the street host the show.”
I have to admit that is something that would fit Zucker’s thought process. If you need a new method to lower ratings, Zucker is a frickin’ genius.
I think one network choice for a guest host for “The Tonight Show” is obvious – Michael Eisner. I think he’s been aiming for it since November 1.
Right now, he’s doing a one-hour “Conversations with Michael Eisner” show on CNBC that airs ONCE A MONTH. That’s far too infrequent for someone of his ego. Even Jack Welch didn’t create a website to promote himself.
Eisner has been spewing corporate rhetoric about the writer’s strike, so “The Tonight Show” would give him a platform to continue to do so.
To me, “who will be the hosts” isn’t the question. Which SAG and AFTRA people are going to be appearing on this thing to promote themselves?
Other than Ellen DeGeneres, I mean.
I WANT NIKKI FINKE TO HOST THE TONIGHT SHOW
yes, all caps
that way we can listen to your strike coverage on tv
perfect, nikki, perfect
Let’s keep in mind that Jay is just starting to tap into his Tonight Show salary which started building in 1992! Jay Leno has been building wealth since then while living off his stand up appearances. Johnny Carson would be shocked and awed by Jay’s actions this week.
Who would have thought Jay would make a stand and Letterman would hide behind his leadership. Go JAY!
I agree that Ben Silverman will host. But what actor or musician would be stupid enough to go on as guests?
NBC said they didn’t want Jay past 2009 so he has nothing to lose. Go Jay!!!!!!
How about Ari Emanuel? He’s already sold out the writers who make him rich, and he desperately needs the fame that his brother has “stolen” from him.
This is easy. The one and only Joan Rivers! There a few good reasons besides just gawking at her surgically enhanced form. 1 – The show might actually have a funny monologue. Sorry Jay (and striking writers). Joan is pee-in-your-pants funny. 2 – She has experience. Not only was she a requested (by Johnny himself) guest-host many times but she practically started FOX with her own late night show years before the Conans and Kimmels of today. 3 – She would be more then willing to cross the picket lines for work. The woman needs a job. Can we talk?
Dick Cheney! He is THE MAN!! Urbane, witty, with a thousand entertaining stories at his command. Why, he could even do a sketch about waterboarding. And if he can’t get guests to come on the show, he can always subpoena them…or have them rounded up in the middle of the night and dragged in with hoods over their heads.
What the hell, Late Night Fan? Unless you know something we don’t, Letterman is honoring the strike. Let’s not start rumors here.
What the hell? More like where the hell? Like in where the hell is Dave? Jay’s done interviews on air and in print, he’s been to the line to show support. Where the hell is Dave, Anon?
Not producing his show, Late Show Fan. It’s nice that jay stopped by with doughnuts, but the important thing is that none of the late night hosts are crossing the picket lines, even though they’re under great pressure by the networks to do so. Casting aspersions on our allies for absolutely no reason is ridiculous. Do you now want to beat up on Leno because his head said Jay “won’t be the first to cross the line”? Oh noes, that could be interpreted to mean that jay will cross if someone else does, why he’s practically scabbing already.
Oh, and BTW, Late Show Fan? From what I understand (I could be wrong, but I think this is accurate), all of the late night hosts, Letterman, Colbert, Stewart, Leno, Craig, Kimmel, are permitted, as WGAE members with daily shows, to go back to work under WGAE rules provided they write all of their own material themselves. They all chose to voluntarily suspend production and honor the picket lines because they’re union members and out of respect for their writers, so yeah pardon me if I don’t think we should be lumping these guys in with Ellen or complaining they’re not doing enough, they should be lumped in with the showrunners who closed down production when the studios were leaning on them to keep going as the ones who are currently doing the most to directly impact the producers’ bottom line.
(Sorry if this is a duplicate post, Nikki, my previous ones didn’t show up so I don’t know if it got eaten)
Late Show Fan, where Letterman is is where the other late night hosts are, off somewhere not producing his show. From what I understand, as WGA members hosting daily non-dramatic shows, according to WGA rules they’re all allowed to go back to work without being considered in breach of the strike, provided they write all of their own material themselves and don’t write anything for anyone else. And you better believe the networks are putting pressure on all of them to go back to work. But they’re not doing it, they’re refusing to cross the picket line, acting honorably, showing their loyalties to our cause and our union. That’s not making a stand?
As far as I’m concerned, the late night hosts are in the same position as the handful of showrunners who shut down production immediately. They’re basically our most significant allies right now, voluntarily refusing to make one more dime for the networks and doing what is most effective to support us and bring this to as swift a conclusion as possible. But that’s not enough, and I’m supposed to complain because they haven’t been by with a bowl of candy or a pizza? Yeah, it was really nice of Jay to drop by with Krispy Kremes, but what really matters is what he and all the other hosts are doing by not crossing the picket lines. I’m not going to cast aspersions for no reason on allies who are standing with us where it matters because they didn’t bring me a Snickers bar. I’d rather just say thanks instead.
If Jay goes so does the Tonight Show. Jay did the impossible, he took over for a man who was a living legend in every home across America and made it a success relating to young and old and becoming a legend in his own right.
I’m not sure what your getting at, and as a poster below stated, why ask the question? There is a countless number of people who would likely jump at the chance to host, but will any of them make it what Jay has made it?
But all this is nonsense anyway. The heart of the matter is Jay has taken a stand to free the bonds imposed by the industry for to long. He’s lifted his own (ample) chin up in defiance of corporate greed when he could so easily turn away and nobody would bother asking questions. Rather he’s taken the high road, a road all to often left bare of travelers and stood firmly on the “moral high ground”.
We need more celebrities that go beyond the quick curtain calls and public service announcements. Kudos Jay! You’ve set an example of honor an integrity in a society that become so far gone as to debate the morality of torcher. Your example is exemplary and before long the silly comments and questions will be gone and all that will remain is what is right and whom decided to support it.
Anon, I get it. Not the time to divide. Frustrated. Want it to all end soon. Lashing out won’t help. But more of these guys (Dave, Conan, Kimmel, Stewart) being visible might.
Maybe, but I doubt it. Having big names out on the picket lines is nice, but all the studios respond to are dollars and cents. The actors come out, then go inside to finish up filming, the showrunners go off to direct stockpiled film scripts, it’s great symbolism but while the studios are still making money off the product, they could care less about what Tina Fey and JJ Abrams had to say when they were outside, even if it gets a positive media spin (plus, frankly, it’s more likely that the media spin would be “who are these greedy millionaire elitists, why are they asking for more money, and why should we care what they say?”). PR might help, but it’s not going to end this strike, we need the economics on our side.
Jay’s silence is deafening.
Why hasn’t he released a statement?
AND
What is this love affair that NBC has for Jay Leno?
Jay shouldn’t have been fired but still…
