  I wondered why most shows suck until I realized they don’t hire the best writers, trhey hire Harvard writers.

• This is too nice for words. I am so happy to see other unions understanding and pitching in for the writers. Anyone ever read Sinclair Lewis or Elizabeth Gaskell? That’s where we’ll all be very soon without unions.

• I’m on the WGA Strike Fund Committee, along with 6 or 7 other writers, and our (volunteer) job is to loan money out to WGA writers who are undergoing financial hardship as a result of the strike. We’ve already gone through our first batch of applications, and I can assure you that there are, indeed, many writers out there in financial jeopardy, who can make great use of the Longshoremen’s wonderful gift. Thank you, ILWU!

  For non-WGA members experiencing financial hardship as a result of the strike, our resources are, admittedly, more limited, but we are close to having a Writer Solidarity Fund up and running, under the independent administration of the Motion Picture Fund. This is specifically for the benefit of non-members.

• Abby – Lots of writers have family in the other unions, some have been or still are members of other unions, such as the teamsters and IATSE. A lot of writers have cops and teachers as spouses and they are union too.It was a joke, and said with love. Duh.

• I wrote the news release which quoted the WGA person saying the gift from the Longshoremen was ‘Capra-esque,’ and for what it’s worth, A) The scene WAS Capara-esque, and, B) the person quoted was a WGA staff member, not a writer. Anyone who’s trying to twist this into writers-look-down-on-other-unions is completely missing the boat. The gifts were deeply appreciated by the people who got them, as was the support of another union.
