The WGA announced Tuesday that the International Longshore Warehouse Union sent the hardest hit striking WGA members 60-pound holiday food baskets with frozen turkeys and other Thanksgiving fixings. ILWU member Chris Bradley said they were paid for by the rank-and-file. The WGA called the baskets ”Capra-esque”.

At least ASU WRITERS HAVE TO BE ABLE TO WRITE WELL TO GET A JOB
I wondered why most shows suck until I realized they don’t hire the best writers, trhey hire Harvard writers.
And who’s providing food baskets for those of us non-writing crew members who have been laid off?
I wonder if the longshoreman were insulted at being called “Capra-esque”, until James Lipton volunteered to explain it to them.
“…and the Longshoremen, thinking “Capra-esque” was some kind of insult, stormed WGA Headquarters and beat the crap out of everyone in sight.”
Can’t we as writers knock it off for one minute? I mean, “Capra-esque?” How about such self-reflexive gems as “Thank you” or “We appreciate it?” Geez Louise, I’m beginning to hate us myself!

This is too nice for words. I am so happy to see other unions understanding and pitching in for the writers. Anyone ever read Sinclair Lewis or Elizabeth Gaskell? That’s where we’ll all be very soon without unions.
Carpa-esque, indeed. Wonderful. Perfect response. Reading all the negativity and nastiness surrounding the strike, it’s touching, important and beautiful to read of acts of humanity and good will. Zuzu’s petals!!! For everyone involved. Soon.
No, no you guys! Pencils up: those baskets were Riskin-esque. That name above the title stuff can get more confusing than Internet revenues.
And every time a bell rings, Les Moonves gets a dollar…
Where do I pick up my turkey?
I’m on the WGA Strike Fund Committee, along with 6 or 7 other writers, and our (volunteer) job is to loan money out to WGA writers who are undergoing financial hardship as a result of the strike. We’ve already gone through our first batch of applications, and I can assure you that there are, indeed, many writers out there in financial jeopardy, who can make great use of the Longshoremen’s wonderful gift. Thank you, ILWU!
For non-WGA members experiencing financial hardship as a result of the strike, our resources are, admittedly, more limited, but we are close to having a Writer Solidarity Fund up and running, under the independent administration of the Motion Picture Fund. This is specifically for the benefit of non-members.

Hello,
This comment is for Patrick Meighan the previous poster. Please make sure Fans4writers.com is made aware of the Writer Solidarity Fund information when it is ready. Many fans are asking about how to donate to non writers out of work because of this strike. If you can notify them, all the fandoms will be made aware.
Thank you!
Wow, it only took a few comments until you guys got to “longshoremen are dumb and will beat the shit out of you.”
These people are hard-working family men who understand more than anyone how important unions are — and what sacrirfices they make to keep them strong for future generations.
Oh, sorry, I’m sure the stereotype is way funnier.

They made the same comments about the Hollywood Teamsters and then stood on the picket line, scratching their heads, wondering why the Teamsters were crossing the line.
Abby – Lots of writers have family in the other unions, some have been or still are members of other unions, such as the teamsters and IATSE. A lot of writers have cops and teachers as spouses and they are union too.It was a joke, and said with love. Duh.
I wrote the news release which quoted the WGA person saying the gift from the Longshoremen was ‘Capra-esque,’ and for what it’s worth, A) The scene WAS Capara-esque, and, B) the person quoted was a WGA staff member, not a writer. Anyone who’s trying to twist this into writers-look-down-on-other-unions is completely missing the boat. The gifts were deeply appreciated by the people who got them, as was the support of another union.
