A news report says NBC informed the nonwriting staff of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that they will be laid off at the end of next week in the wake of the show shutting down for the writers’ strike. Leno is still refusing to cross the picket line, but the network is talking about bringing the show back on the air Nov. 19 with a bunch of guest hosts.

Ellen SUCKS…Jay’s THE MAN……
Who are they going to get to guest-host? I mean, who besides Ellen is going to be stupid enough to do this? Especially without writers to do their joke and write the bits that go into the interviews?
Jay Leno should be applauded for supporting his/all writers knowing opportunist guest hosts may be filling his seat. Stay strong, Jay. You are the man!
What “guest hosts” are going to do this? You’d have to be a pretty dumb actor/comedian/host to scab for a “guest shot” at hosting the Tonight Show.
Consult the history of “replacement player” football and baseball…and what happened to the wannabes who crossed the picket lines…
Guest hosts will be very hard to find.
Go, Jay! Go!
Jay could easily have gone back to work, but his standing with his writers sends a storng message to his millions of fans that striking is a step worth taking and that he respects the working people of America.
The staff won’t be laid off. If there’s guest hosts
they aren’t bringing in guest production staff.
Go Jay! Thanks for supporting current and future writers. We love you!
Ellen… no. I have nothing to say that’s nice.
I suppose the studios are worried about promotion for their big Christmas movies. They should be. Even if they got, say Jeff Zucker to sit at Jay’s desk…. which of the high profile SAG actors do they believe will cross the picket line to promote their movies? I don’t really see this happening with any success.. so I say to NBC, try it… by then we’ll all need a good laugh and one pointed at NBC will be especially delicious.
So they’re firing the crew, and then finding a new host, and doing the show without writers or crew? How exactly does that work?
Jeff Zucker as guest host? This I have got to see.
This is kind of a fun game. Who will host it? Someone will — fo sho.
a.) Howie Mandel
b.) Tucker Carlson
c.) Chris Matthews
d.) Keith Olbermann (dude thinks he’s hilarious)
e.) Don Rickles (like he has anything to lose)
Basically, the categories are probably — news oriented hosts from NBC family or comics who really have nothing to lose. Any other legit options?
My son did an interview with Leno’s head writer that will be posted by tomorrow over at my blog….
Well, we did have perky Katie as a guest host one year, but that most likely was a April Fools Joke of some kind which had Jay on the Today Show. Seriously it will not work and the host will have to quit to support the strike.
My top choices for guest host for The Tonight Show?
Um…let me see. Oh yeah, Bob Iger. He’s hilarious. Andrew Dice Clay, because in hard times such as these I miss his hickory dickory dock routines more than ever. Rupert Murdoch (see Iger). Iranian president Mahmoud Achmenijad. He kicks Seinfeld’s ass with observational comedy!!! Or, if they can get him. And I mean *if*: Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. I saw him at the Islamabad Hilton Improv and he was surprisingly nimble. But my top choice for guest host: Bill Gates. Any guy who heads a company that takes six years, tens of millions of dollars and uses the best software engineers in the country and comes up with the Zune, has got to have a great sense of humor!!!
I went to the story link provided and found it interesting that the main motive provided for bringing the Tonight Show back, with guest hosts, is “to save all those jobs”. Are we to believe that NBC produces the Tonight Show as some sort of charitable work program to keep production personnel off the streets and of gangs? They would produce it in Romania with a crew 12 year old orphans if it were practical to so. MORE? The camera operator wants MORE porridge?!!
Yay Jay! Steve Carell’s enlarged balls must be catching!
i think that NBC will abort the guest host of the Tonight show plan and replace it with a encore airing of that said nights episode of “Countdown” with Keith Olbermann after local news. that airing would be taped for air on NBC late night at 8PM ET/ 5PM PT on MSNBC where it airs live at that time. no i’m not plugging Olbermann, i just saying the time the show airs live.
Hi! Nice site!
So Far from what I Have seen, NBC is airing old episodes tonights show was from June 29,1992. I Have not seen a guest host yet.
I really hope the AMPTP and the powers that be on the WGA side are giving extra to charities, as putting writers and production staff (who are normally a generous bunch) out of work around the holidays when so many charities rely on their kindnesses is just another of the issues I have with the timing of this strike. Now we have to think twice about how much and to which charity we will donate to. Dig deep fellas, I suppose I should say “fellas” as I haven’t heard of any women mentioned on either side of these talks. Are there any involved in the decision making? Can we put some in there?
I was looking back at strike posts and I need to correct myself here. Jay and Katie exchanged places as part of a May Sweeps ratings stunt put together by the Today Show.
