Yesterday ABC suspended nearly everyone on Jimmy Kimmel Live because it’s in repeats since Jimmy won’t cross the picket line of the WGA (he’s a member). Even Kimmel has been suspended without pay. Before, Kimmel without fanfare had been quietly underwriting the low-paid production people on his show’ since the start of the writers strike while senior staffers were paid by ABC. Now I’ve learned that Kimmel is going to pay the salaries for the “vast majority” of all the suspended staff, including the high-priced veterans. This is amazing because unlike Dave and Jay and Conan, Kimmel is paid the least of the major late night hosts. (I hear single digit millions as opposed to double-digit millions.) Seriously, his friends are worried he’ll tap out doing this. Major props in order.

Maybe the idiots on BOTH sides should grow up and settle this crap before that happens!
I used to be a MAJOR Conan fan, but seriously, he’s tapped out — it’s in his eyes, he’s trying too hard. Andy Richter leaving didn’t help.
So I watch Jimmy now and I think he’s the one to watch here. Though he’s not as edgy as Letterman (at least in the good ol’ days), Kimmel still has that obscure humor plus, I really think if he was positioned as such, middle America would get him. He’s the underdog, clearly, but I think he’s gonna be the one everyone’s gonna be watching in three to five years PLUS he’s the rare male comic whose gf is as funny as he is. That says TONS about his character.
In short, love him! Go Jimmy!
While it’s amazingly nice and generous of Jimmy, it almost makes it seems like he feels responsible for the staff being out of work. He’s not. It’s not at all his fault. The studios who refuse to negotiate a reasonable deal are completely responsible.
Of course it’s wonderful he’s helping the crew — God bless him — but the idea that he’s doing the “right” thing makes it seem like if he didn’t do this it would be the wrong thing. And that’s not the case. The studios firing the show’s staff at Christmas was the wrong thing. As is their continued refusal to negotiate in good faith.
If other hosts/showrunner etc. don’t do what Jimmy did, they are not in the wrong. The studios are to blame, not the individuals who want to go back to work and create work for their crews.
Go, Jimmy, go. I loved you when you were the sports guy on KROQ.
it really is astonishing. the mega-mogul media magnates can’t part with a paltry percentage of their COMPANIES’ money to be fair to their “employees” while kimmel dips into his own pocket to pay his staff. if we ever needed a vivid example of which side holds the moral authority here…
Great that people are getting paid whatever the motivation, but it’s a PR move. Kimmel is not funny, not entertaining. We’d rather watch 10 year old repeats of Frasier than ever turn on Kimmel’s show. He’s a schlubby misogynistic Trump-loving, Rosie-basher.
Late night wrap up: Kimmel is a saint (a funny one at that), Letterman is the comsummate benevelent pro, Conan is a genuinely good guy, Craig Ferguson is absent, Stewart is a sage, Colbert is fair, Fey is aloof, Daly is…(who’s Daly again?) and Leno is a cheap scumbag fading into obscurity.
“it’s a PR move”
I would provide some reasons about why your comment is erroneous, but you’re a Rosie O’Donnell fan. Logic is alien to you.
Providing an explanation to you is like teaching Rosie how to write a complete sentence. It’s the right thing to do, but it’s ultimately a wasted effort.
Oh, please. Who cares why he’s doing it? Honestly, I don’t believe, nor do I think he believes, that anything is going to make people who don’t want to watch him suddenly decide to give him a chance, even a big gesture like this. Nor do I think it’s going to make people like him who previously didn’t. The commenters here make that case. Whatever his reasons, it’s a great thing he’s doing and I hope that it doesn’t hurt him too much if this strike drags on. I mean, good grief…Jay gets crap for not doing it and then not doing it “enough”, Jon gets accollades for doing something that he never actually did, Ellen gets crap because she’s stuck between two unions (while keeping people employed) and now Jimmy quietly laps them all with his generosity towards his staff and he’s a PR-greedy whore. Nobody can win.
It’s probably because the “vast majority” of his staff are related to him.
sarah silverman is way funnier than kimmel (who’s not funny)
Here in microcosm is the United States today. From one article we get a dozen takes on a person’s actions. He’s real, he’s fake, he’s generous, he’s doing it for the PR. Any or all are correct, but this clearly shows how one person’s black is another’s white.
The fact that you’d name yourself 18-49withmoney says everything I’d need to know about what kind of person you are.
Kimmel is doing a great thing. Even if you don’t think he’s funny, you’ve got to give that to him.
Maybe you’d like him more if he played a retarded girl who gets on a school bus. Shoot, I might actually like him more if he played a retarded girl who gets on a school bus. Jimmy, if you’d agree top play that part I’d agree to scab write it.*
*That’s a joke, Nikki. I am not going to scab write anything.
“Seriously, his friends are worried he’ll tap out doing this.”
Good intentions not tempered by wisdom is a dangerous thing. If he taps out his savings with this, kudos for meaning well, but it won’t amount to anything medium and long term expect a cleaned out bank account.
Rethink this, Jimmy. It’s not worth tapping out – most of the same people you are generously helping will show you no consideration in the future. Just the facts.
Single digit millions is still WAY more than Jimmy Kimmel deserves.
Who thinks this guy is funny anyway?
His spots on Dancing with the Stars were pathetic!
I think we all know the only reason he’s got a gig in this business.
And it has nothing to do with talent.
Good man Kimmel, you are a class act, even with all the ass jokes. Don’t listen to what the trolls say. You are doing a good thing, your Mom should be proud of ya. The writers and actors in this business worked their way up, they know what it’s like to be short rent and food money. Boy, do they know. Jimmy Kimmel is one of the funniest guys I have seen in awhile, along with Adam Carolla, used to listen to them on KROQ all the time.
Good man.
This is a very big move… and a very kind one. No one threatens to tap out their financial resources just for PR… Jimmy, you are an inspiration to us all!
Kimmel gets mad propz for having his people’s backs.
I’m still jealous of him over Sarah Silverman tho….
Kudos to JK. I know some of the people he’s keeping afloat.
Now, are you going to be the first to cover your band as well?
He truly is our generation’s late night guy. And he reflects how our generation is sick of corporate greed and looking to build a better community, entertainment and otherwise. I think in 20 years (or sooner) he’s going to be an icon. Bigger than Carson. Why? Because he is not only funnier, he’s got a bigger heart.
He sounds like a decent guy and this makes me want to watch his show even though I never have before. On the chance that he’s reading this: Kimmel — you’re going in the TiVo!
Wow, way to go Kimmel. Hopefully this will spur some sort of insane season of giving from the top down on these struck shows.
Great for Kimmel to help out. Great for all the hosts.
Okay. Now, quit bashing Jay. Jay has helped more people than you’ll ever know. Just because he didn’t publicly announce he’s paying his staff doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have. A couple of tacky, loser employees who panicked because NBC laid them off went to the press instead of finding out the truth. The bonus checks from Jay were extra – no one told the employees that’s all they were getting. One or two idiots just assumed this. And, hopefully, these idiots won’t be back to work when the strike is over. And just know that a lot of emails bad-mouthing Jay are from a writer who was fired a few years ago for very good reasons.
To staffer, if you’re still around:
Do you have any thoughts about why Jon Stewart and Conan aren’t picketing or speaking up in favor of the WGA?
Do you think that’s because of their contracts, pure political concerns, a desire to be peacemakers, some kind of disagreement with the WGA, or some other reason?

Kimmel is a class act, and I love the fact he kept this on the down low and didn’t ask for – nor expect – kudos. I agree he’s the one to watch. Another Carson as an earlier post claimed? Maybe.
