Fans4writers.com, a website where fans show support for striking Hollywood writers, has made plans to use the occasion of the Tournament Of Roses Parade on New Year's Day to have five planes "skytype" in support of the writers. In addition, a street team of fans will hand out flyers at the parade. To fund the effort, a silent auction and fundraising event is being held featuring some items donated by WGA members including scripts from the TV series Battlestar Galactica.
The plan is to have five separate "sky signs" bearing pro-WGA messages 10,000 feet above the Rose Parade beginning at 9 AM Pacific Time -- each five miles long, and every letter the size of the Empire State Building. In essence, it's skywriting but done like LED signs which can be seen for 15 miles in any direction or nearly 400 square miles. The content of these ads will be kept secret until they are revealed at the event.
Given that the parade will be broadcast on ABC, NBC, Univision, HGTV, Travel Channel, Discovery HD as well as KWHY and KTLA in the Los Angeles area, as well as more than 150 international territories, millions of people could see the messages. But it's a big "if" whether the commentators and cameras for all these Big Media outlets, some of whom belong to the AMPTP which recently walked away from contract talks with the WGA, look up in the sky or even make reference to the messages. Still, it's going to be hard to ignore the spectators craning necks to watch five airplanes "typing" up to 30 character messages by emitting biodegradable vapor "puffs" in a dot matrix pattern computerized to form the letters in the sky. Then again, stranger things have happened.
Previously, the fans have organized such events as sending pencils to Big Media CEOs. (See my previous, Pencils Down, More Pencils In The Mail... and Universal Calls Cops On Pencil Pushers.) So why are the fans going to this much trouble and expense in this new effort? "First of all, it is to express support for the writers, and the strike. It's also that there will be a million people on the ground, and this is a way to reach them directly. People that may not know about ways to support the writer's strike," the website explains. "The more people we drum up, and bring over here, the more we can do to show support, and hopefully help send the message to the AMPTP that the writers are supported in the strike by the fans, and the public. Something like that helps give the AMPTP incentive to really start negotiating for a fair deal."
An estimated 1M to 2M people on the ground watching the parade and in the vicinity should be able to see the sky typing which should last for 30 minutes. "With this one event we will be seen by more people than 1 ad in a national or trade paper. Since the people watching the parade and the parade itself will be representing people from all over the USA of high school and college age kids and their families we will be hitting a key demo that we need our message to get to. This is a way to get some attention from people who normally would never hear more than a 30 second blip on the news if they live outside of LA or NYC," the website explains.
The fans seem to have thought of everything. If the weather is overcast, a back-up plan for the skytyping will be done over the actual Rose Bowl game. And if weather is even worse, the fans won't be charged and all money collected will go into the WGA Solidarity Fund. Also, the event won't conflict with FAA-approved temporary flight restrictions that will be in effect over the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl Game because the skytyping flights take place above the air ban.

wow, that should attract the high rollers
Weather forecast calls for Santa Anas that morning. Hope it works.
We’ll see. $20 just sent in my name.
I’ve never watched the bloody thing. I’ll DVR it this once, just because of this.
I think Letterman will make more difference than most anything so far.

Don’t expect a lot of coverage by the media on this. Not because they are in the pockets of the moguls (maybe they are), but basically because if they give this coverage then every group with a cause will follow the same playbook. They have to stay neutral or the major sporting events will become political rallies. Do we really want to see “Pro Choice And Proud!” or “Stop Abortion Now!” in skywriting when we’re tuning into a ball game or parade?
Its a nice gesture and I applaud the people who are trying to make a difference, I just doubt there will be much impact.
These guys are amazing.
This idea is three days old. These fans have mobilized and committed to pay a lot of money, that they MIGHT get back if people bid on this auction. It’s huge. Million of people watch the Rose Parade !
Because it is such a last minute effort, that these wonderful fans and supporters have pulled together in such a seriously short amount of time, the only real donations that have been possible so far, are the Battlestar Galactica scripts donated by Ron Moore and his writing staff.
These fans are out there delivering food every Monday morning at 6am to the Barham Gate, thy have mobilized the donation of over $500,000 pencils (one of the few stories about the strike that made it onto TV news all over the country), they’ve written letters, made phone calls, showing up to picket . They are working tirelessly in support of the writers.
Please, if you can, go to Fans4writers.com, and donate something that might help these guys. This is a fortune they are putting up out of their own pockets, and their best hope of getting it back will be with monies from this auction. Scripts, a phone call, movie memorabilia (all those old crew jackets), anything you might be able to donate to give them a hand.
If you’re a fan- please bid at this auction. A lot of you feel like you can’t help because you don’t live anywhere near LA, this is your chance to help.
I am Ron Moore’s wife, I have been interacting with fans for a few years, and have come to have an enormous amount of respect for their loyalty and devotion, but I have been blown away by how they have stood by the writers, supporting the strike all the way.
Check out some of the fan message boards sometime, and see all the avatars and banners they post with everyday, supporting the writers strike.
Check out fans4writers.com. They have created a message board for all the writers and all the fans of every show on television and some that no longer are on the air. They’ve created places for writers to talk to their fans, and to see all of the fan actions they are planning in support of the writers strike.
It is incredibly moving to see. Take a little bit of time out of the infighting and second guessing and go see what you can do to help out the folks who keep the writers on the air. Give something back to them for everything they are doing to help.
Terry Dresbach Moore
I’ll take you out of your suspense. No, this will not appear on television.
Announcing this so far in advance? Good way for the networks to warn and prepare their staffs on how to completely ignore it.
Bad strategy folks, but thanks for the support.
This seems like a colossal waste of money.
In the beginning of the parade, there is always a flyover from the Blue Angels or some outfit, with expensive military planes. It’s pretty overwhelming. They can’t miss showing that if they shoot the sky. Unless they decide to discontinue it due to the wastefulness.
Why should they cover it? People are watching for the parade, not for political commentary.
“So why are the fans going to this much trouble and expense in this new effort?”
Hmmm.. That’s a toughy. But, as a fan, I’ll hazard a guess:
1) Fans don’t like having their shows off the air.
2) Fans want their shows back on the air, preferably soon.
3) Fans are, for some whacky reason, more loyal to the guys who actually create the shows that they love, than the guys who sell them and live off the fat of this creation, and are tired of seeing people they admire getting f*cked around by people who are, to be polite, useless and completely replaceable middlemen who we could give less than a fraction of a shit about.
The real question is how long until Fabiani & Lehane takes notice of this fact, and try to extend their division strategy (which has so far been “divide the union against its ‘organizers’” and “divide the union against the rest of those out of work”) to “divide the creators from the fans” I expect some time before the parade or perhaps after, the AMPTP starts some pathetic sock puppet site (fansagainstgreedyorganizers.com?) or press release declaring that creators have betrayed the fans in favor of money or power or their ‘agenda’. Watch this space. It’s going to happen.
Terry Dresbach Moore, beautiful post.
I think it’s an inspiring effort and I hope it gets aired on TV. Fans are the people who are ultimately responsible for ALL the checks paid in Hollywood — they are the audience.
(and if I had any money at all, I’d be throwing wads of it at those Battlestar scripts…)
The networks would cover Rainbow Head John 3:16 if he were there. Religion and money are the two forms of political speech they endorse.
I am amazed that there is so much negativity over something the fans want to do for the writers. I stress *want* to do.
If these messages are seen even for one minute, then that’s one more minute of hopefully getting more people in the writers’ corner and getting their word out.
I recall reading here last week that some of you wish more people in the general public knew that the strike was still on. Well here it is folks! In letters as high as the Empire State Building.
The groups I belong to are donating toward this spectacular fan supported event.
Theunithq.com, Yahoo Fan Group, The_Unit_Show and in strong support of “Brothers and Sisters” writers “Bloggers and Sisters.”
Thanks.

I realize this strike is a huge thing for the writers, but honestly, this is a beloved event that the public loves. Trying to force people to care about the strike is not going to win any support – in fact, it might even piss a few people off if you try to commandeer their parade. All this for a chance the media might show it? I think the money may be better spent supporting the lower income writers who are supporting the strike and maxing out their credit cards in the process. Buying pencils, skywriting – complete waste of money (unless you have stock in the pencil company!). Realize that there are some writers who will never recover financially from being out of work this long and donate the money where it will do the most good.
It’s nice that they want to do this, but this won’t be appearing on television. The floats are, of course, on the ground and the cameras are pointing DOWN from raised platforms except for the handhelds. Not only will you not see this message, you rarely see any sky at all in the telecast. They would have to go out of their way to show any message in the sky. That’s unlikely.
Fans4Writers says they’re going through this expense and effort because “The more people we drum up, and bring over here, the more we can do to show support, and hopefully help send the message to the AMPTP that the writers are supported in the strike by the fans, and the public.” That’s great, but is there a purpose behind this? Are they attempting to get the public to do something or not do something?
Stunts are okay for drawing attention, but there needs to be come purpose behind them other than “support.” There needs to be some sort of action that they want people to take. I don’t get that from this at the moment.
There will be plenty of competition for attention at the parade:
China protest – Protest organizer John Li, a member of Caltech’s chapter of Falun Gong, the spiritual movement outlawed by the Chinese government in 1999, promised his group would be seen if not heard. “We are going to ask the audience on the road to turn their back when the Asian float arrives, and show banners. We have to send a strong message to say no to human rights abuses in China,” Li said.
Peace Protest – Sheehan, the outspoken San Francisco Bay area activist whose son was killed in Iraq, is campaigning for Congress against Rep. Nancy Pelosi and calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. She will join other pro-impeachment and anti-war groups at the parade, according to her sister, Dede Miller. As many as 1,000 supporters are expected to rally before and after the parade and distribute 20,000 pamphlets while flying 300 banners along the parade route, said Peter Thottam, executive director of the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center.
Article linked below.
This is a huge waste of money and will never be shown on the air. Not because the evil media companies won’t show it but because it’s not part of the parade. People don’t tune in for commentary on events going on in Hollywood, they tune in for the splendor of the Rose parade.
Have you ever seen a skywriting message in ANY sporting event, parade, etc EVER???? I haven’t. But everyone on this site will cry “big media conspiracy”! when it’s not shown.

Is it really necessary to mock another writer’s work. Especially work that has inspired an entire fan base to take action on all the writers’ behalf. I’ve never seen the show, but I know that it is a huge cult hit.
It’s so discouraging to constantly see the sniping that goes on here. Did it really make you feel good to post that comment? I have a feeling, that no matter who you are, that Ron Moore is vastly more successful than you.
I watched in amazement while a PA on my show spent any spare minutes converting his Battlestar Gallactica DVDs to files that could be played on his IPod. That was in all the spare time he had after getting lunches and dinners and coffee and Robecks for all the writers, cleaning out the kitchen, running payroll to the valley, washing the showrunner’s car, setting up the green room, and restocking the cabinets.
Maybe you will mock that as well, but does anybody like your work, whatever that may be, that much?
Oh, that’ll bring the AMPTP to their knees. Skywriting. That and side deals with late night talk show hosts. The AMPTP is already reeling from the impact of funny YouTube videos. I expect they will cave any day now.
No disrespect to this effort intended, but from what I have read in the press about the Rose Parade officials and their talks with other protestors (like the Falun Gong and the anti-war/impeach Bush Cindy Sheehan crowd), the law enforcement official presence at this year’s parade will be huge (1200+ extra cops & feds & military). I don’t think they’ll appreciate last minute leafleting during the parade (they might put up with it if the leafleting happens *after* the parade but not while the floats and the bands are passing by the spectators). The parade and law enforcement officials might in fact see it as a disruption by ambush.
Worse, there’s a criminal law in Pasadena about ‘disrupting’ a special event…it’s a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and/or a $1000 in fines. If I were going to leaflet at the parade (I won’t though because I don’t live any where near Pasadena plus I don’t think enough time has been taken to plan this out as well as it could have been planned) I would be very careful about how I did so.
I love my writers and my production teams as much as any other fan or viewer, but if I’m going to risk going to criminal court and/or jail for them, I want to be sure that I got maximum impact for my time and money spent. I don’t think the 3 days spent so far will achieve the goal but good luck to them for trying.
The enthusiasm is admirable if not the execution or the action itself.
Oh and from now on, my donations (cash and memorabilia) will be going straight to well planned out campaigns like the Industry Support Fund which will officially be launched after the New Year’s holiday.

Fans are awesome. AWESOME! Ginormous props to everyone who gives a damn then proves it.
While it’s great that the fans are behind the writers, we all know that the networks won’t be covering the sky writing. Not necessarily out of trying to squash the writers side but because they are telecasting the parade, not the side show.
Anyone who gets up in arms about the lack of coverage must also be upset that the man with the Westside Rentals man or the dude with the John 3:16 sign doesn’t get more airtime at sporting events.
I work for a local news station. Guaranteed, this will not be covered. A fan protest at an awards show, okay. An obscure, needs-extra-explanation effort at the sunny, happy Rose Parade? No relevance, no chance. Just the way it is. Sorry, guys.
Incredible. Just incredible.
How many people attend the parade? Where are all of these people coming from? All over the country.
There are so many complaints about how no one in the rest of the country knows, or cares about the strike. Now the FANS are pooling their resources to reach out to America on the behalf of writers.
What is the point? What does the point have to be, to not get shot down and walked all over by the naysayers here who bad mouth everything and anything.
So what if the networks don’t show it on air? So flipping what ?
How about appreciating the gesture, the sentiment, the SUPPORT ??!!??
How about appreciating the effort that these fans are making on behalf of the writers? Or maybe they should just sit back and watch reality TV, instead of delivering food at 6 am in the morning, or coming up with over six grand to deliver digital messages of support for the WGA in the skies over Pasadena.
And no one is going to jail. the fans have talked to the police, there will be no paddy wagons waiting to haul anyone away. How utterly stupid.
But sincere thanks to those of you who do get it, who do appreciate the gesture, who do understand who ultimately buys the product. It will mean a lot to the fans who read this board every day, that you recognize their effort and support.
BTW, the proceeds from this auction are already designated to go to the Industry Support Fund, once the fans are paid back.
BSG just happened to win a Peabody, and was named best show of the year by Time Magazine for anyone who feels such things are relevant in a thread about a strike. I can’t believe I am bothering.
I have always thought the AMPTP plant accusation was a bit silly, but…
It isn’t leaflets, VDOVault. It is skywriting. Big difference and not even close to breaking any laws.
And anyone so cynical as to not appreciate this effort, whether it creates any dramatic result of not, should be ashamed of themselves.
Why is all this fan money being spent on ad campaigns? If fans want to support the writers, they should donate to the strike fund to help writer families in need. Leave the politics to those whose job it is to do that, i.e. the WGA itself. Besides, the vast majority of America is completely disinterested in this, and nothing is going to change that. My point isn’t that fighting Big Media isn’t worthwhile because “no one” cares (Americans just tend to take things for granted, and they do have a lot of options out there), but that there are better, smarter ways to fight it. Allowing the writers to stay away from their jobs longer will do that. So donate to the fund, don’t bother with all this other crap.
Besides, how many trees were destroyed to create all that leaflet paper, only to have people throw them in the trash (or on the ground) a second later without more than a glance. First pencils, now this. THINK, people.
Damn, VDOVault, that’s the most disturbing thing that’s been posted yet. Now I feel like traveling to Pasadena and trying to reclaim the city for the United States. If exercising free speech rights results in jail time, we have bigger problems than I realized.
God bless the Fans! Period.
And thank you.
So what’s the scoop on this? Covered or not, did it actually happen? It’s 3PM on the east coast and I haven’t heard anything. Anyone have an update?
The messages went up at 9 a.m. From what I understand, there were more winds than the Skytypers liked and they ended up repeating two of the messages to be on the safe side, which we appreciated. The messages were:
FANS4WRITERS.COM
HELP A WRITER SCORE
SAVE YOUR SHOWS
SUPPORT THE WRITERS
FANS4WRITERS.COM
Didn’t get any news coverage at the time that I’m aware of, but we didn’t really expect that to happen. We had volunteers handing out flyers on the ground with more information. Still waiting on pictures — the Skytypers hadf a photographer, they’ve told us we’ll be getting pics and YouTube video soon. One of our volunteers got a few pics but was too busy to get more as we wanted flyers out while the messages were in the air. They did an outstanding job of handing them out while not annoying anybody.
Great effort by the fans to show their support…
It won’t get on any news, that’s for sure… Or, maybe it will, who knows. I would bet a few bucks that Letterman might mention it.
As for the “what to do”s, at least one of the sky messages was their website, fans4writers.com- which, from what I’ve seen, covers a lot of the what can fans do.
Kudos, fans!
I loved the Skytyping! It reminded me that I am not the only one in this campaign!!
I think it raised awareness, and reminded folks of what is going on.
The Skytyping message was very prominent. What a great way to inform, educate and raise awareness levels with mass markets about important public issues. Skytyping would be a great way to raise awareness about fire safety, water conservation and other related matters of the day. There was a recent YouTube posting on how Skytypers helps with fire safety. To learn more, visit http://www.skytypers.com

Terry, you’re bothering because you get it. Thank you so much for putting yourself out there. Fans certainly appreciate it. Please don’t let the tinny, tiny sound of a very few shills and bitter pills stop your involvement & enthusiasm. You & Meryl put kind, lovely faces to what means the most to fans & writers.
nice!!!!! Thanks Fans!!!!!
Rose Parade broadcasting complaint. I want to hear the music and see the parade. There is way too much camera on the emcees and way too much talk about themselves. Why do they have to talk over the bands who have spent so much time rehearsing and raising money to attend? I would prefer the emcees shut up. I don’t care about their careers or personal life. I turned on the TV to watch the parade not them.
