I thought the paper just wanted a small strike news interview. But the New York Observer has named me its "Media Mensch Of The Year". This is the first time the paper has chosen a woman. Here's today's article. (Full Disclosure: I was that paper's West Coast Editor from 1995 to 1998. Editor-in-chief Peter Kaplan was the first boss who encouraged me to write any and all criticism about the Hollywood moguls.)
Reporter Doree Shafrir calls me an "online outlaw" and claims I won the title "for stubbornly refusing to let this [writers strike] story die and reminding us all that a world populated solely by American Gladiator Idol Big Brother Makeover would be a very sad one indeed, and ... that all good journalism comes, first and foremost, from obsession." (But how did the effing paper get hold of a July 2006 photo of me when I didn't provide it?) NYO says a prize goes with the title: "a DVD three-pack of All the Presidents’ Men, Norma Rae and Billy Wilder’s classic Ace in the Hole". I'll treasure it always. (NYO: The Media Mensch Of The Year )

Congratulations! Enjoy your prize!
Well done Nikki. A well-deserved recognition for the job you’re doing with DHD.
What you’re doing in this blog is what journalism is meant to be about – unflinchingly reporting what’s going on whether people want to listen or not.

Kudos on the accolade. I have only begun visiting your website recently, but it is one of only a few places I can find out about the strike. I don’t always agree with what you say… but, isn’t that the fun of living in a world safeguarded and uncovered by the likes of Woodward and Bernstein.
Although the strike or the inner workings are in and of themselves not really a “big issue” topic, what makes this strike and Miss Finke’s coverage so different isthe fact that it exposes the larger problem: global corporation consolidation and a stranglehold on what people see and hear and think.
(and isn’t consolidation a much nice word than, in the words of “Old Jay Leno”, what they would really have to call it? An oligarchy)
That, incidentally, is the only point of criticism from me: Nikki, eight guys are NOT enough for a country club. They’re a cabal
Congratulations on the award, though.
well deserved! it’s so important to all of us to have a source of information that we can trust, and a forum to express our diverse views. thank you!!
Wow! Congratulations!
Congrats, Nikki. A better use of “mensch” I can’t imagine!
Hey Nikki,
Just wanted to say that I had never heard of your site before the writers’ strike, and only found it because I was trying to read as much stuff about the strike as I could. I’m merely a TV watcher, sympathizer with creative people everywhere, and hater of mega-corporations who desperately hopes that there will be some tiny pushback before the conglomerates take over the world.
Now I know that if anything happens strike-wise, the best way to find out about it is to read it on your site. As it says in the NYO article, you are clearly about calling bullsh*t where bullsh*t appears. It’s not like you haven’t offered _any_ criticisms of the writers or the below-the-liners; you just point out that for the most part, the writers are in the right because, well, they’re just plain right.
Anyway, clearly you’re doing something right, and telling us what we need to know, and thanks for all your hard work.
Ah, the power of kick ass journalism combined with the power of the internet. Showin’ the big media boyz how it’s done!
Keep it up, Nikki. You rock.
Congratulations, Ms. Finke!
That is a really nice article they ran, and IMHO, you deserve all the kudos that can be thrown your way. As a former BTLer, who has been buried in the chaotic ordeal that is Small Business Ownership, I have been able to learn a great deal from your site in my precious spare time.
Thank you for your excellent work!
Congratulations!
Well deserved. Congratulations.
Mazel Tov!
Congratulations, Nikki. I am just an everyday worker not employed in the entertainment industry (I work in education). I’ve read all types of publications covering the writer’s strike, and I find your coverage to be informative and entertaining at the same time.
Keep up the good work.
