Keep refreshing for latest updates…
An NBC spokesperson is suddenly telling me new and important behind-the-scenes details about Leno and his Tonight Show monologue which the WGA isn’t. That, on Monday at WGA headquarters, Jay Leno set up a meeting with WGA West president Patric Verrone and The Tonight Show writers and some other WGA members and informed them he was going to write and perform his own monologue when he went back on the air Wednesday. “Patric Verrone said, ‘We’re going to look the other way.’ And there were a lot of witnesses in that room,” the spokesperson just told me. “So if Patric Verrone now disputes that he told Jay he could do the monologue, why weren’t there further actions by the WGA between Monday and Wednesday?”
As everyone now knows, Leno not only delivered his trademark standup opening last night, he also admitted that he’d written his own monologue. The NBC spokesperson tells me that, after I broke the story on Deadline Hollywood Daily that Leno — a WGA union member like almost all of the late night TV hosts — broke the guild’s strike rules by writing his own monologue, ”reached out” to Verrone again this morning.
“Jay called Verrone to restate and rediscuss what had been agreed to on Monday. And at that point Verrone said, ‘You’re in violation.’ And Jay said, ‘I’m not. We talked about this on Monday. And I support the writers. I support the union. I’m within my legal right to do this monologue.’ ”
The NBC spokesperson characterized it as “a cordial conversation”. But the network and the Leno were surprised by the WGA terse statement this afternoon: “A discussion took place today between Jay Leno and the Writers Guild to clarify to him that writing for The Tonight Show constitutes a violation of the Guilds’ strike rules.”
Soon after, NBC issued its own statement: “The WGA agreement permits Jay Leno to write his own monologue for The Tonight Show. The WGA is not permitted to implement rules that conflict with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the studios and the WGA.”
Now I hear NBC is consulting with its lawyers to figure this all out. But I’m told that the network and Leno are both pissed at what they see as the WGA’s talking-out-of-both-sides-of-its-mouth behavior here. “Especially considering that no one has been more supportive of the striking writers than Jay,” the NBC spokesperson told me.

Well isn’t this a classic.
First, NBC says Jay is allowed to do his monologue according to the strike rules and chastises the WGA for acting like they are making up rules.
Then they say Jay got permission? Well, if it wasn’t against the rules, why would Jay be asking anyone for permission?
I think Jay was just confused by the rules, and maybe playing a little dumb so he could get at least one monologue in before having to sit there and actually ad lib like Conan and Kimmel.
Jay seems like a nice guy and is a legendary comedian, but his solo ad lib skills are not that of his competition.
What? No Way. Give me a f’n break!
WGA would never do this, it may be a lame face-saving slimes way out for the Networks to cry “confusion” after ordering Jay to do it but I seriously doubt there was any lack of clarity on the part of the WGA.
These Companies are run by lying, cheating, dirty fighting assholes who simply don’t care about the Writers they feed off of.
It also seems clear Jay doesn’t really care much about Writers either to go along with this corporate charade when you compare his behavior to that of someone who genuinely does care, and we all know that is Dave.
Jay Leno – the first of many to be double-crossed by Verrone?
Fuck Jay.
He was informed previously, long before the New Year return, that the writing of a monologue was prohibited by the WGA. Using the Huckabee Defense is unacceptable. Leno knew exactly what he was doing, his insecurity and passive-agressive competitiveness with Letterman prevented Jay from adhering to the rules of WGA membership.
Leno wants to appear to be the nice guy (and he well may be, off screen) but he has a history of twisting things to his advantage while blaming others for his true nature.
The guy is a scab pure and simple.
And on a side note: a least Kimmel had the balls to essentially say, “Disney/ABC can make me come back and sit at the desk, but they can’t make me break my WGA vows. I’m no Jay Leno.”
One more reason for Verrone to be impeached immediately! He is worthless! He is utterly at sea and by far the worst leader possible for this strike. There needs to be an immediate Vote of No Confidence just like they do in Parliament. Verrone is a two-faced cowardly nitwit. I believe Leno and NBC on this one. Their version sounds much more truthful. Verrone is just trying to cover his ass here now and it’s not going to work. You need to tender your resignation immediately Mr. Verrone. Your time is up. You have lost this battle and all the others to date and unless a new General is promoted to replace you the WGA will lose this war. You are a walking talking disaster. You wanted to wreak havoc you wanted to be a rock star. Get off the stage already. We are tired of your petty bullshit and your ego-seeking stunts. I wish I could physically man-handle you and bodily throw you out of Guild headquarters. The lowest ranking writer would do a better job than you have done on this. Get lost. Go write a spec Simpsons script and try to get your old job back you loser.
Actually, David Letterman has been a LOT more supportive of the writers than Jay. Jay talks the talk, that’s all.
As for Verrone v Jay … I’m somehow not ready to believe NBC’s version. Or Jay’s.
It is NOT true that Leno has been so supportive of the WGA
How has he been supportive? By showing up for a photo op with doughnuts the first day? Big deal. Even that was done at the request of his head writer, not of his own volition.
Where’s he been on the picket line now that the strike is no longer exciting, but a cold grind?
Leno’s been invisible. Just saying you support a group is meaningless, especially when your actions undermine that very group.
Leno’s the kind of guy who’ll screw you over but doesn’t want you to be mad at him for it, so he double talks.
You mean to say that Verrone CHANGED HIS MIND!?!
You mean like this?
Before 12/7 – Anthony R. Segall, general counsel of the Writers Guild of America West, said the union was not eager to court separate talks with the hundreds of companies that eventually sign the master contract. “Obviously, we’re not out to demand to bargain with 1,300 companies,” Mr. Segall said.
After 12/7 – WGA confirmed it will seek to bargain with the companies individually in an effort to break its negotiations impasse with the AMPTP.
I suppose Leno doesn’t know the meaning of “we’re going to look the other way”? As in “if you rub it in our faces, we’ll have no choice but to react?” If Leno is so supportive of the writers he’ll call off NBC’s dogs and at least privately acknowledge that this was his bad.
What the hell is NBC talking about? The WGA *IS* looking the other way. Jay is clearly in violation, but they’ve taken no action. That’s looking the other way. Duh.
But it shows us what kind of man Jay is. He doesn’t need to scab the monologue to put his crew back to work, but he’s doing it anyway.
I sure hope *I* never need your support, Mr. Leno.
Soon after, NBC issued its own statement: “The WGA agreement permits Jay Leno to write his own monologue for The Tonight Show. The WGA is not permitted to implement rules that conflict with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the studios and the WGA.”
Last I looked, there is no collective bargaining agreement between the studios and the WGA. That’s the whole reason everyone is on strike.
What agreement are they talking about?
NBC is full of it. Nobody is more astounded by the degree to which we’ve validated Scab Jay than I am, but there’s no way in hell that Verrone would be stupid enough to tell him that he could blithely violate strike rules and get away with in in a meeting at WGAHQ in front of witnesses. “An NBC spokesperson” said this? Don’t tell me, s/he was there at the meeting, too?
“Jay said, ‘I’m not. We talked about this on Monday. And I support the writers. I support the union.”
Yeah, well, while I fully believe that Leno would be brazen enough to declare, “Do you know who I am? I’m Scab Jay, I’m allowed to strike break as much as I want, think of it as me giving you my support!” this conflicts with Nikki’s previous reporting that Scab Jay tried to weasel out of punishment by pleading ignorance of the strike rules.
“no one has been more supportive?” no one? really? no one?

Patric Verone
You’ve got to be @#$%ing kidding. Look the other way? What happened to, “WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER?” Define All. Can you make the same exception for a staff writer? Because i’ll go back tomorrow. I don’t have fifty antique cars or millions to fall back on and i don’t really give a damn about hurting Jay’s feelings or the people who work for him. I’m burning through my savings and we’ll look the other way for Jay scabbing? Fuck Jay. I’m behind this strike all the way but not if you pick and choose who’s a scab and who’s not. Say it aint so or you have betrayed your members.
this situation continues to get more and more confusing…especially while watching the Iowa results…
I’m sick of all this “no one has been more supportive of the striking writers than Jay” stuff. By doing his show he’s boosting NBC’s ratings and therefore prolonging the strike. Same goes for Conan.
Man if NBC didn’t play this perfectly. Just on face value(granted, I know nothing more than what I have read here), this sure makes the WGA look like buffoons. If they did in fact tell Jay they would look the other way, how does that mesh with the hardline stance they’ve taken with others? Why does Jay get a free pass and Carson Daly, Conan and Jimmy don’t? How about Ellen? Why was she nearly burned at the stake and Verrone let’s Jay get away with it? Sounds like a lot of double speak and selective prosecution to me.
On the other hand, if they didn’t give Jay a pass, the WGA sure mishandled the PR on this. A strong statement of condemnation and appropriate punishment would have been the only legitimate course of action. And it seems blatantly obvious that no action will be taken against Jay.
Ultimately, it looks like the WGA was trying to play both sides of the coin and got caught. Amateurs. No wonder this thing has gotten so out of control.
Whatever, Jay Leno is now the tainted scab that follow Johnny Carson. Now it all goes in his VARIETY Obit when he dies. And all that crap with Helen too. When does Conan get Jay’s show again? Start the countdown website!
I’m glad to see that an NBC spokesperson is deciding who has been the most supportive person of the striking writers. I get such great comfort in knowing that the compassionate folks at NBC are overseeing this important issue for us.
How is Jay a big supporter of writers? Because he brought them donuts on the first day? That’s suppose to give him a pass on being a scab? I want to know how the lying scab thinks he’s a big supporter of writers and how Verrone justifies even being nice to the man? I will never ever watch Leno again. No matter what happens with the strike, I think he’s scum.
What the WGA talking out of both sides of their ass? I can’t believe it. Whoever said that Verrone was out of his league wasn’t to far off. When do we all go back to work?
“So if Patric Verrone now disputes that he told Jay he could do the monologue, why weren’t there further actions by the WGA between Monday and Wednesday?”
What? Maybe because Leno didn’t do the monologue UNTIL Wednesday and the Guild didn’t know he was going to.
Come on now – if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck even smells like a duck – its a FUCKING DUCK!
Jay Leno is a SCAB!
After he admitted he wrote his own monologue after being warned weeks ago that no monologue would be allowed for talkshow hosts crossing the picketline then if you allow Jay to cross the WGA is SCABBING ITS OWN STRIKE.
Stop JAY – NOW – Please! In teh name os sweet Jesus on the cross.

I am ashamed of the way both Ellen and Carson were vilified both by the WGA and on this website. Vilified. Not quite the same for Jay and Conan, though.
Be consistent, for God’s sake.
