UPDATE: Late Night TV's Official Return: A Sneak Peek Of The Shows
The Late Show With David Letterman snagged Hillary Clinton as a last-minute guest for his New York City show tonight. But on the other coast, about 100 striking writers carrying signs saying "Mike Huckabee: What Would Jesus Do?" and "Huckabee: You Can't Deny This Cross" protested the Republican presidential candidate's decision to cross their union's picket line outside NBC Studios in Burbank even though he expressed "unequivocal" and "absolute" support for the writers' cause earlier in the day. He was the main guest on Leno's first Tonight Show back from strike hiatus after Jay, too, decided to cross the picket line. The strikers have been crowding every entranceway all day, from 8 AM through 6 PM, to ensure they slammed the former Arkansas governor who of all the GOP candidates vying for the White House has actively solicited and received union support. “We’re hoping that when he [Huckabee] arrives and sees the picket line he’ll turn around," said WGA West prez Patric Verrone. "We’ll be disappointed if he makes the appearance." Well he did, and the WGA was angry. Especially because Huckabee had told the press earlier in the day, “I support the writers, by the way. Unequivocally, absolutely. They’re dead right on this one. I don’t think anybody supports the producers on this one. Maybe the producers support the producers, but I think everybody in the business and even the general public supports the writers.” (Photos by Jim Stevenson.)
UPDATE: I'm tipped tonight that Huckabee used the non-picketed Telemundo gate on Olive just south of Alameda in Burbank to avoid the picketers. The gate, which the WGA wasn't picketing before, is now "tainted", which is union terminology to mean that NBC and not just Telemundo is using it, so the WGA is now free to picket at that site as well. Huckabee now is claiming he thought the writers strike had settled which is why he crossed the picket line and went on Leno. But nobody's buying that, least of all the WGA which issued this statement: "The Writers Guild is disappointed that Mike Huckabee crossed the WGA picket line today at NBC. We welcome the statements of support he has made for striking writers, but we ask him to respect our picket lines in the future and urge the media conglomerates to return to the bargaining table to make a fair deal that will put writers and the entertainment industry back to work."
Unlike Huckabee, Clinton didn't have to cross a picket line because David Letterman's Late Show is not a struck company. Clinton has repeatedly refused to cross WGA picket lines. So even if she'd shown up in person there wouldn't have been any striking writers outside Letterman's Ed Sullivan Theater because his Worldwide Pants received an interim agreement from the WGA so Dave could go back on the air with his scribes. Dave's show opened with a taped cameo by Hillary Clinton facing the camera and saying: "Dave's been off the air for eight long weeks because of the writers strike. Tonight he's back. Oh well -- all good things must come to an end." (Since she hasn't been the butt of his jokes for two months now...)
Usually, long lines of wannabe audience members throng outside NBC Studios before The Tonight Show shoots. But it was clear not everyone knew that a writers strike was underway. There was a journalism college student from Alaska who came out to L.A. on vacation and, instead of going in to see The Tonight Show, read one of the WGA's informational leaflets and joined the picket line. A teacher who recently moved to town arrived to pick up a ticket and saw the labor action. She immediately called her teachers union rep who urged her not to cross. So she joined the striking writers on the picket line.

In this picture, Huckabee, who isn’t in the WGA is called a scab, and Leno who is in the WGA, is what….. just misunderstood??? As long as you’re giving all sorts of excuses for Leno (listen to them on the news, right out of the mouths of writers on the picket line) you really can’t call others scabs…….well, you can…but it makes you look……. well, ya know……..
Yes, but Huckabee has an excuse — he’s not a scab, he’s just ignorant!
From Salon’s War Room page:
Huckabee is scheduled to appear on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” Wednesday, despite the fact that TV writers — who he says he supports “unequivocally” and “absolutely” — remain on strike. There’s no conflict there, Huckabee explained earlier today, because “there was a special arrangement made for the late-night shows, and the writers have made this agreement to let the late-night shows come back on, so I don’t anticipate that it’s crossing a picket line.”
Not exactly.
While David Letterman’s production company, WorldWide Pants, has reached a deal with the Writers Guild of America — meaning writers are returning to work at “The Late Show” and the WorldWide Pants-produced “Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” — NBC hasn’t struck any such deal, and the writers are still picketing “The Tonight Show.” When a reporter explained the situation to Huckabee today, the candidate again said that his “understanding” was that “there’s a sort of dispensation given to the late-night shows.”
“Is that right?” he asked.
Told that it wasn’t right, Huckabee reportedly said, “Hmm” and “Oh,” then moved on to another question.
100 writers picketing? Why weren’t there 1,000 writers out there? Wasn’t NBC the only designated picket of the week before normal picketing resumes next Monday?
The NY Times says Rockefeller Center had 15 picketers in NY instead of the usual 200.
Way to show strength in numbers, guys. (Tongue firmly in cheek.) You should have taken advantage of today heavy media coverage with the convergence of major figures: Clinton, Huckabee (who claims he didn’t know Leno was a struck show, yeah right buddy) and the return of late night. You won’t get this publicity on Friday or any other day, just watch.
It will be terribly shameful for you if you have this kind of weak turnout at the Globes picket line.
Signed — a Fan of Good TV who believes in your cause and tried to spread the news, but thinks you’re getting kinda lazy. Weren’t there 4,000 of you at a rally the first week or two? You know, the one that got covered because Alicia Keys was there? Please don’t claim strike fatigue; you just had two weeks off the lines.
Now I’m going to go watch the fifth season premiere of The Wire (on HBO on Demand) again and ponder how amazingly talented some of you are when you aren’t so lazy.
So we take it out on Governor Huckabee?????
He was asked to be on the show. He didn’t force or create it.
Please, take your pickets elsewhere.
Jay’s the scab. Where are the picketers EVERY DAY that he uses faxed in jokes?
now THAT’S a smart guest to have on the debut show
smart for Letterman, smart for Clinton – good for WGA strike visibility
The whole country is sick of this strike. The producers are putting an entire industry out of business. Good work, you greedy weasels. Karma will certainly be busy dealing with you lot.
Here we go again. Huckabee Derangement Syndrome. Sigh.
To the guy holding the “Huckabee is a Scab” sign:
You really don’t do the Writer’s Guild any favors by appearing to not know the meaning of “scab.” Huckabee may be a lot of things — hillbilly, bigot, and lunatic are three that come to mind — but he’s not a scab. He’s not replacing striking writers on the Tonight Show, therefore he’s not a scab. I know you’re angry, but words have meanings, even for TV writers.
It was way more than 100 “all day.”
I like that someone felt the need to call their union rep to tell them what they should do. Nothing like free thought.
Apparently Mike Huckabee doesn`t or didn`t know that by appearing on Leno he`d be appearing on a struck show. He told reporters on his campaign bus, “My understanding is that there was a special arrangement made for the late-night shows, and the writers have made this agreement to let the late night shows to come back on, so I don’t anticipate that it’s crossing a picket line.” And he wants to be president.
Ronald Reagan was the only labor union leader ever elected President of the United States.
As the former head of the Screen Actors Guild, he would have surely honored the picket line.
He just drew the line at strikes against public safety by government employees and broke the Air Traffic Controller’s illegal strike.
Huckabee, as in so many other things is 2 faced.
He is no Ronald Reagan
I like the part about the teacher who had to call her union rep to find out what she should do, and shes teaching our kids, no wonder the public schools are on a decline, i wonder if she wears headset telling her to breathe in and breath out also
Nice signs, guys. Taking cheap shots at religion? You really know how to win over the hearts and minds of middle america, don’t you? Oh, actually…judging by the ratings, you don’t.
Boy, the liberals hate Huck and the conservatives hate Huck. Who likes this guy? (besides the Evangelicals who are propping him up because he’s “one of us”)

“What the Huck” is brilliant! Did a writer come up with that? he he! Nikki you are doing an amazing job as a journalist.
Lighten up – this has nothing to do with politics. These people are on strike, and he crossed their picket line – do you expect them to give him a hug or something?
Re Comment by how insulting January 2, 2008 @ 9:28 pm:
First off, it is possible to criticise a person, without criticising their whole religion.
Second, “What would Jesus do?” is a reference to a question Huckabee was asked during a Republican presidential debate, when he was asked “The death penalty, what would Jesus do?” (http://tinyurl.com/2g6qsn). Incidentally, his answer was “Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office, Anderson. That’s what Jesus would do.”
And “You can’t deny this cross” is a reference to Huckabee denying the placement of cross image in his Christmas TV ads.
Thirdly, Christians are supposed to follow Jesus’ example when face with moral questions. So how can it be insulting to expect a church minister to ask himself “What would Jesus do?” when he’s faced with a ethical question. Such as whether to cross (or rather, sneak around) a picket line, after claiming total support for the strikers; or by denying (or even lying) about including religious imagery in TV slots.

I loved the “What the Huck” sign. Bottom line for the Huckster being on Leno: His need for publicity in the attempt to win Iowa, superseded recent comments, past union endorsement, and common sense. He’s practicing to be an effective leader – LOL!
Now matter what Huckabee does, Hollywood’s going to ridicule him because he’s Christian. Why should he care what the WGA thinks of him? Why should honor the strike? None of us would vote for him anyway.
What’s the big deal.
Huckabee writes his own material and he’s not a member of the union.
I watched the show. Are you going to slam me next?
I am generally supportive of the strike, but you can not demand the participation of those outside the guild.
Al Sharpton was on Kimmel last night. Where is the diatribes calling him a Scab and the numerous news stories going on about it? Oh wait he is black and a democrat so that would be deemed as politically incorrect and against the mainstream media liberal bias.
Dear Governor Romney, this is to convey to you my concern about you appearing on any television talk show aside from David Letterman or Craig Ferguson on CBS-TV. Aside from the implied message it would send that you are anti-union (because of the current WGA strike against the networks),there is the question of sending a message of corporate media content control. There is growing evidence that the media corporations are indulging in candidate selection for the 2008 elections by the differing attitudes they take to each candidate. Not on their opinion segments alone but in their news reporting. Hence John McCain is labeled ‘angry’, Hillary Clinton, cold and forbidding; and you a flip-flopping cult member. Was it an accident that Mike Huckabee was invited on the Jay Leno Show? Is he now the favorite son of the media powers? The media unions have been fighting such corporate bias for years. A part of the current Writers Guild strike is to extend corporate media fairness to cable and the Internet. Union members of all crafts thruout the nation want to know where you stand in this. Whether you appear on struck programs or not will give them their answer, which,we are sure, they will publicize. We ask you not to appear on struck programs. Respectfully,Conrad Bromberg
