Incidentally, as a follow up to my “Got Jealousy?” response, I went into Best Buy today to pick up a copy of Michael Clayton and they were sold out. Clearly Clooney is no movie star.
maybe best buy wasn’t “sold out” of michael clayton, maybe they cleared the shelves of it for more profitable inventory – this is the time of year stores do that
but, giving the benefit of the doubt, then bravo – clooney packed the house at best buy
Hey, Milo/ 2:25 pm:
Given your argument, if no one guarantees big box office, then all actors should get choice roles and be considered movie stars. And, you only reference one female “star” in your laundry list of actors. You must either work for Warner Bros., or be a friend of Clooney, or both, with that tired brand of sexism.
Clarence, were were these hordes when the movie was in theaters?
That’s right. Someplace else.
And to Milo – how is doing not one but three Ocean’s movies not playing it safe? The first one was fun. The second and third were horrific and made me want to vomit at all the smugness on display by not only Clooney but everyone else involved (with the exception of Catherine Zeta-Jones who actually seemed to have showed up to act).
If Clooney wants to do his “art films” as you call them then he should be paid accordingly. His regular salary is ridiculous considering he fails to bring in an audience on his own. He should be paid as much as Chris Cooper (though Cooper can act circles around the once-pretty-now-oily Clooney).
Such a know-it-all hubris-sufferer.
Dear Francine,
Where were they when the movie was in the theaters? They were sitting in some Transformer type movie. Unfortunately, the general public is of the Starbucks mentality when it comes to taste in movies. Or they wait until people tell them that it’s a good movie. That’s why it was re-released in the theaters so that they simpletons might now go to see it after everyone tells them it’s a good movie.
Dear Chris,
Now we all know you work at Best Buy. Thanks for exposing their marketing practices. I know they were sold out because one of your co-workers said, “We’re all sold out.”
Is Clooney doing anything to hurt anyone? How dare him be successful and have opinions. If he expresses them, people say, “Shut up, George.” If you express yours and people tell you to shut up, you’d say “it’s my opinion and the last time i checked, it’s a free country.” Jealousy and hypocrisy, the Los Angeles way of life.
For the record, Clarence, I’m not the same Chris you responded to; in case you didn’t know and in case you cared. But who cares if the other Chris works at a Best Buy? Was that an elitist jab at someone’s occupation by some elitist writer? I’m sure Mr. Clooney wouldn’t approve.
BTW and PS: I am not against famous people expressing their opinions (in fact, I’m all for it) but I am against someone like Mr. Clooney who seemingly annoints himself as the ultimate arbiter of a given situation and representative of an entire group. That takes some fucking hubris as far as I’m concerned. Sort of like Spielberg when it comes to the Holocaust.
And Nikke I totally love you, btw. I love how you use ‘shit’ and ‘fuck’ for emphasis and not because you’re inarticulate.
“And, you only reference one female “star” in your laundry list of actors. You must either work for Warner Bros., or be a friend of Clooney, or both, with that tired brand of sexism.”
Interesting that you read it as “sexism”, but that list just comes from the people I could think of at the top of my head that have had the reputation of guaranteeing that a movie make big money. The obvious one I left off was Julia Roberts, who was mentioned earlier in the thread.
You do realize that I was listing people who do NOT guarantee a movie making a ton of money, right? So being left off that list isn’t really a slight.
So if there are female stars who can guarantee a blockbuster, who are they?
Dear Chris #2,
I am not a writer.
I don’t think Clooney has ever anointed himself as the “one”. Yeah, what hubris it takes to take time out of his life to travel to Darfur with cameras and try to help. What a pathetic loser he is for saying, “hey, this is wrong and with my fame, i can bring some much more needed attention to the situation.” I’ll bet if you were from Darfur you’d have a much different opinion about Clooney. Clooney himself has said he is much better at the “business side” of Hollywood than acting. After his long years of experience in the industry both in front of, behind the camera, and on the producing side of the business he’s qualified to weigh in situations like these. He’s certainly more qualified than you or I.
I just don’t understand why everyone hates that he has opinions. It’s not his fault that the media decides to quote his every word and print it. Is it a recording artists fault if the radio overexposes their song to the point where you hate the song? Is it the same to say “I hate that recording artist”? Why does it bother people like you that he’s out there trying to make a difference where he can. You don’t have to agree with him. I don’t think he’d require that you do what he says or agree with his every opinion. He just offers them. And, it’s not his fault that THE MEDIA shoves it down your throat. He doesn’t The Media does. Put your hate where it belongs…Access Hollywood, The Insider, and Extra.
