Yesterday may have been a Blacker Monday than I or anyone reported. A soon-to-be-ex-New Liner tells me, “We were told in our pre-meetings yesterday that there were 575 NewLiners being let go. They have still not circulated a list of the folks being kept at the new New Line. Some are being kept into the summer and even the fall to wrap up books and records and such…” Meanwhile, are there even a dozen people (aka sycophants) who think Toby Emmerich deserves to stay on? I say he’s a short-timer.

The people staying at New Line are the ones who are:
1. Cheap
2. Un-opinionated
3. Supremely untalented
4. Loyal to Toby
5. Dumb as a rock
The talented and smart ones are being brought into WB or being let go. Either way, a win-win situation for the good people. The ones who are now unemployed won’t be for long.
Nonsense all Toby needs is a talking dog movie and the new and improved slim and trim New Line will be in the money. You’re money Toby you’re money. A talking dog movie is all you need. You’ll be there large and in charge for a long time but only if you make a talking dog movie.
Warner is so shady. Right now they are offering random New Line employees jobs in completley different fields and non-related to their current NL jobs, like publicity peeps being offered admin assistant jobs.
Why? Because if Warner offers them a job and they turn it down, then they might not qualify for severance any more!!! This seems illegal but I’m not lawyer. I already have had three NL friends tell me that it happened to them. How cheap can Warner get????
I have a talking dog.
Anyone know what’s happening to the people behind Hairspray? That seemed to be a lone bright spot for New Line last year. Mark Kaufman?
It seems like the long timers are being offered demotions in irrelevant departments at WB. Nice way to keep them from getting their severance. Toby and Disco in the mean time are developing Hoot 2.
I have a talking dog too, but mine drinks pina coladas.
HOOT AND EVERYTHING ELSE THEY TOUCHED WAS RUINED AND A HUGE MARKETING FAILURE THANKS TO REALLY BAD IDEAS BY RUSSELL SCHWARTZ
Mark Kaufman? Hahahahaha. He also made Hoot and the straight-to-dvd Full of it. Hahahahahahaha.
HOOT was a marketing failure? Have you seen that piece of crap? Wow, Tommy, you seem dumb enough…why not apply to the new streamlined New Line? You would fit right in!
Everyone knows that New Line had THE WORST marketing department in the industry.. From Russell Schwartz to Laura Carrillo to Gordon Patterson and down. Yes most of their movies were horrible, but the creative was HORRIFIC. Those three in particular were backstabbing and the three least talented creative advertising executives in this business. It will be interesting to see IF and Where any of those idiots wind up.. they should really all get together and start an agency….The Three Stooges Marketing Company….
When you have a bad movie, their job was to “create” the illusion of a good one, they not only couldn’t do that but fucked up the good ones as well……
Oh Les Mayfield Jr.,
Judging by your abundance of free time (two comments in 5 hours?!) I would guess that you’re unemployed? And too broke to spend money on, oh I don’t know, a hobby?
I’m sorry but no amount of commenting will help with the sale of that screenplay NL keeps passing on. Move back to Ohio. Hollywood didn’t work out for you.
Mark Kaufman? For all the crap Disco, Brown, et al have been taking, no one mentions THE BIGGEST sycophant of all? I hear he’s fast at work on, uh, Toothless 4: Decay Of The Gums?
From Variety: “New Line will maintain its own development, creative and production teams, as well as its own marketing, publicity, and business affairs staff”.
Really? With only 40-50 employees? Good luck. I happen to know that EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the production department got the axe. So … another lie from Bewkes. Just trying to bump NL off slowly to cushion the blow. Face it, New Line is done folks. Finished. Kaput. As soon as Toby and his frat brothers blow their development money on hookers and gin, it will all officially go away.
Andrew, Hairspray was good and successful in SPITE of Kaufman, not because. He did everything in his power to fuck it up but luckily the movie had a director that told him to go fuck himself. Nobody in that whole company had a clue about how to make the movie. I will say I thought the much-maligned on this site marketing group did a good job with it. My fucking dog doesn’t fucking talk. Fuck.
New Line’s chances of success now are about as real as the hair on Mark Kaufman’s head.
Am I missing something here, or am I the only one to recognize a huge item? In the Variety article it said that Richard Brener signed on for a promotion to President of Production. That was Toby’s old job…and he’s still there…but Brener is now running the slate?
Seems like Bewkes might have pulled a real move here, because to me that indicates that Toby is little more than a figurehead at this point. And it would make sense, since Brener’s been behind 75% of whatever positive moves New Line made anyway.
Just something to chew on.
