My latest information is that HBO may make an announcement as soon as tomorrow that it's hired United Talent partner and veteran TV lit agent Sue Naegle in the job of president of HBO Entertainment. She replaces Carolyn Strauss who exited with a production deal. Naegle's big clients include Alan Ball, Jhoni Marchinko, Jenny Bicks. She's the one that HBO boss Richard Plepler really wanted to hire based on a lot of Hollywood recommendations (including, I hear, Endeavor's Ari Emanuel. Was this another move by that agency on UTA?) All week, UTA had been asking Naegle whether the rumors were true she was in contention for the gig. And she kept claiming that she hadn't been given an offer yet. Plepler and Naegle met Saturday and clinched the deal then, from what I heard. (See my previous: HBO Going After UTA's Sue Naegle)

Comments On Deadline Hollywood are monitored. So don't go off topic, don't impersonate anyone, don't get your facts wrong, and don't bore me.
Of all the people the supposedly met with, that is one bad recruitment! What are they thinking. Sue is not well liked in the industry and has no development experience.
This is such total utter bullshit. Not bullshit that you’re reporting it. But bullshit from a creative sense.
They’ve hired an agent. The same way Paramount brought in Brad Gray (okay, a manager,) and Warners promoted Robinov.
And what have those studios gotten? Nothing. Nothing but bullshit deals and scripts with the people who the agent represented before they became executives.
So now she’s going to come in and make the same kind of deals with the people she represented, and HBO is going to be more in hole than ever.
There might have been a time when agents could make the transition, but not anymore.
HBO is now going to be a closed shop. And one less place that will actually be open to writers and directors who aren’t represented by one of the “executives” who used to be an agent.
You mean to tell me there was nobody – nobody – nobody in all of the executive ranks of Hollywood who wasn’t capable of doing this job, and maybe casting a wider net on the waters of creative people?
As I said, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
Yay! She is a rock star!!! congratulations sue!!!!
Kudos to “John Doe” and “Angry Writer” for their ill-informed, anonymous mudslinging! Way to stand tall! HBO hires an advocate for writers, and the writers get pissed. Classic.
if sue is not well-liked in the industry, there is no hope for the rest us.
she has great taste in material and a passionate, fair, and professional approach that will undoubtedly carry over to hbo.
a smart choice for hbo.
I, for one, am thrilled for Sue. She has great taste. She is a fierce competitor. Writers adore her. And she is a winner.
(the fact that i am losing my strongest competitor is also a nice perk)
Sue Naegle is a total advocate for writers and directors.
The town should be celebrating.
Quick response to angry writer:
It’s standard business that when someone is promoted they make deals with people they know. It’s not isolated to agents who cross over.
Chris Albrecht used to help run the Improv in the 1970’s. That led to him making deals with tons of former comic he worked with: Garry Shandling, Larry David, Chris Rock, Comic Relief, Robert Wuhl, Mike Binder,
Like those people or hate them, they helped define the “golden age” of HBO comedy. Cronyism is not necessarily bad if someone knows talented cronies.
A number of agents have crossed the line that Sue’s about to cross and done very well — Ron Meyer, Paula Wagner, etc. When you honestly get to the core of it, being a creative executive is an instinctual thing, and there’s no reason to think that, given her extensive experience in this business, Sue won’t do well — or, in the minimum, that she at least has a chance to do well. Sue has always championed writers, but she’s always wanted to do more than just shepherd them. Can we at least let her set foot in her office before we start judging her or the hire?
Whether Sue Naegle can improve HBO remains to be seen but one thing is a near certainty: She can’t make HBO into a more worthless waste of fifteen dollars a month than it has been for the last year or more.
does anyone else think sue n. and laura dern are separated at birth?
Sue is smart and nice, and she actually likes to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN! The problem with most execs is they’re too passive, and too afraid of failure to make a move. If Sue stays true to her nature — and I believe she will — HBO will be an exciting place to be.
Hey, Sue, now that you are at HBO, please renew IN TREATMENT. The show has the smartest writing and best acting on television. Give it time to find more of an audience. SEX AND THE CITY was NOT a raging success the first season but later grew to iconic status.
Good luck at HBO!
