I’m told CAA partner Kevin Huvane is throwing a belated birthday party on Saturday night for recently released from prison Joe Francis, the scandalous founder of Mantra Films Inc, which produces those disgusting Girls Gone Wild soft-porn video and DVD series
which have prompted so many complaints that women and even underage girls were filmed without their permission. UPDATE: *In addition I’m told Huvane along with his posse of friends use Francis’s Mexico vacation compound in Punta Mita almost every Xmas and New Years as well as Easter. When Huvane’s not having his own parties he parks his very special clients there. So some see the birthday party as a payback.*
I’ve confirmed that Francis is not a CAA client. But it’s not only Francis’s professional behavior that’s controversial, but also his personal behavior. You may remember this article from the August 6, 2006 issue of the Sunday magazine of the Los Angeles Times by Claire Hoffman in which she described an incident in which Francis “humiliated” her by pinning her to the hood of a car and twisting her arms hard behind her back (so hard she feared he’d break them) while he pushed himself against her and shouted – apparently demonstrating his 2003 arrest in Florida. Hoffman claimed that “the pressure he applied was so intense that hours later, my arms were covered in red hand marks.”
There also have been many accusations leveled against Francis by women and even underage girls alleging he sexually exploited and abused them and even worse. And then there are the charges of tax evasion, business fraud, drug trafficking, and on and on. Given all this, it can only be deemed surprising that Huvane, because he is prominent in a talent industry where perception is everything, would have anything to do with this guy, much less throw him a birthday bash. Not only does Huvane represent some of the top actresses in Hollywood, including Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Renee Zellweger, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close, but many of these women are feminists to one degree or another. Kidman, in fact, is the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women and just this week spoke out in favor of UNIFEM’s “Say NO To Violence Against Women” campaign to raise public awareness for the subject.
I alerted CAA today that I was writing about this, and the agency did not deny or explain Huvane’s involvement with Francis. Huvane had no comment. Instead, a source at the agency thought it was “weird” this would be a story for me.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Such Ignorance,
I didn’t make the FHM analogy. Not sure why you mentioned me.
CAA must really be in bad financial shape to be celebrating this convicted felon and overall scumbag.
Bad move. Short term profit, long term loss.
Credibility is easy to lose, hard to regain.
Dear Such Ignorance:
Good heavens.
My post was meant to be satire. Or at least facetious. But if I have to explain that… it means I failed, right?
Oh, well. I forgive myself.
My point was that pornography isn’t even a subculture anymore. It’s the dominant view of women – definitely in music, and often in television, usually in magazines and regularly movies. So much so, that Kevin Huvane is probably shocked anyone would take issue with his party for Joe Francis.
Thanks for letting me straighten that out.
love,
CaliPornication
p.s. I’m a woman.
Amused by all the feminist vs. cynic squabbling here.
Whether one takes the sexual politics deadly serious or gives some breathing room for boys to be boys is one thing…
Sexual politics matter not, here. Fact is that Joe Francis is simply a louse. He’s been lucky to skate through a few charges, while getting pinched on others. Drug charges, contempt-of-court, child abuse, alleged tax evasion…
CAA should know, lie with dogs, you’re gonna get fleas…
Morality in Hollywood? Forget it. You’re in very nebulous territory here.
Huvane isn’t risking anything with this move. Francis is a client who makes him and the agency a lot of money. Favors like this are done for important clients all the time…that’s their argument, right or wrong. What about Roman Polanski’s agency? I’m pretty sure it’s one of the big 5…where’s the Hollywood feminist outrage over that? There isn’t any, what a shock.
Newsflash…men have been objectifying women since the beginning of time, it’s how we think and wont change unless you change the hardwiring. Men like sex and are turned on by nubile young women, always have, always will be. Huvane probably watches the videos too. If you don’t believe it, you’re delusional.
It’s a shame girls are exploited without their proper consent, but I can’t fault Huvane for trying to keep a client happy. He’s a businessman.
While we’re on the subject of CAA sleeze, why doesn’t someone speak up about the fact that they signed Mike Huckabee?!?!?
posted the story on their political blog not too long ago.
That whole agency is disgusting and vapid.
Wannabe Industry Analyst -
A quick perusal of Krista Allen’s credits shows no actual porn. She has done one Emmanuelle film and some Emmanuelle television shows, but that’s not hard-core. Typically, when you refer to “porn” without the modifying adjectives “soft” or “soft-core”, people assume you’re referring to “hard-core” pornography, which is not the case with Ms. Allen.
If you had watched Unscripted on HBO about three years back now, you would have seen a storyline involving her character – she plays a version of herself – having trouble with being taken seriously as an actress after an Emmanuelle past. Oh, and she was damn good in the show.
A lot of actresses – and with the increasing use of full-frontal male nudity for humor/shock value in comedies, an increasing number of actors – have stripped for the camera, some in higher-pedigree projects than others. Helen Mirren appeared naked in “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, Her Lover”. Would you characterize Helen Mirren as having done porn???
Nikki,
was traffic heavy today and you decided to write from home? what a non-story. I’m sure we’re all shocked, SHOCKED, to know…Hollywood has a whore house in it. Whats next, Brad Grey buys alcohol for young starlets? Amy Whine house does blow? oh, wait, that parts true….
Wow, ladies, I love the double standard. Women objectify themselves every damn day here, and do much worse things than joe francis every dreamed of, just to get ahead. He made porn? big fucking deal, who was IN the porn? women. he didn’t pay taxes? big fucking deal, lots of people have the same problem. So, huvane should only rep people the women approve of? getdafuckouttahere. last time I checked, francis wasn’t a murderer or a child molester. If he was, I’d see your problem. I’d have the same problem, but, he isn’t. I love the arrogance you, nikki,(and, frankly, a lot of women in hollywood)display here. who are you to, in essence, try to get his female clients to drop him because you disapprove of joe francis? what effect does his repping of francis have on anyone else he reps? no effect. yet, you want to jam this guy because you don’t like joe…it’s a BIRTHDAY PARTY, for fuck’s sake. Who cares. Oh, and note to J.J: Never, EVER be ashamed to be a man.
If this agent endorses — feels fine with — GGW’s degrading, cruel, vapid, shallow depictions of women, I’d suggest his female clients worry about his capacity to find them interesting, complex roles. How many good scripts is he tossing aside because he doesn’t relate to or care about strong, interesting women? Anyone who associates with Joe Francis has to hate — or at least disrespect — women at some level.
no it doesnt fuck you
You tell ‘em, Nikki. Good for you.
You anti-porn types make me laugh. Porn objectifies and demeans women? Really? If that theory makes so much sense, what does it do to men when it’s made by men and nary a woman is in sight? Gay male porn — is it OK? Show me one gay guy who has a problem with it and I’ll show you a closet heterosexual.
There are lots of contemptible swine in Hollywood who treat people like garbage. And yet, where are the calls to boycott them?
Hey sexphobes, keep your neuroses to yourselves.
I applaud Nikki for reporting this….and for reminding us that talent agents and agencies rarely display any concerns for the morality of their behaviour and attitudes.
TIM aka PORN GUY
Get a life.
Double Standard, Alex:
We are programmed to enjoy seeing boobs, and programmed to be disgusted by death.
I applaud Nikki as well. Thank God someone is not afraid to mention it.
CAA has never had any class, so I am not surprised. But, I doubt that their women stars will get involved in this.
For Huvane and every other man making comments here about this being a non-issue, I wish, oh how I wish that Francis would get a shot of their daughters drunk and pulling off their shirts for public consumption.
What’s everyone all freaked out about?! These little boys are just identical little clones of their little daddys who formed this company way back in the day. They can’t help it. They’re fully programmed to act like this!
I’m guessing the real story is that Mexico place of Joe’s. I’ve heard rumors that’s an excellent place to stay… like a 5 star hotel with servants, cooks, butlers, etc. Sad to think that some fancy free vacations would compel people to give up on their morality and make a pact with a devil like Francis.
Is this public knowledge? Do people really know how horrible Francis is and that tons of Hollywood people keep company with him anyway?
Zippy’s right! It’s called brainwashing and it begins in the mailroom!!!
Sounds like these guys hate women even more than they hate themselves.
I’m waiting for video from the b-day party.
Well, I actually love women, and I’m pretty fond of myself as well; But, from what I’ve seen, women hate themselves more than any man ever could. I love how some of you try to equate this with racism; you can’t throw a stone in this town without it landing near SOMEONE who doesn’t like blacks, or jews, or hispanics; if you want joe francis gone, because he’s a mysoginist and exploits women, then I, as a black actor, want all the racists gone too. Oh, wait, then there wouldn’t be many people left..hard to get hired if no one’s around..so, I guess it’s OK for them to stay, even if it’s just for the sake of convenience. See what I’m getting at? Slippery slope, no? Who do we “keep at arm’s length” next? The guy’s a douche; but, this town is full of douches, or did some of you not know that?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored a child molester with an Oscar. Has any feminist recipient returned hers in protest?
You better quit your association with the LA Weekly, then, Nikki. The last twenty, thirty pages of every issue is all ads for porn and ‘escorts’.
That means you make your living the same way Joe Francis does. But even Joe isn’t in the ‘escort’ (prostitution) business. You are.
As far as Kevin Huvane is concerned, you reported it yourself above, he doesn’t even represent Joe. But you’re suggesting CAA’s famale clients should leave the agency because Kevin threw a party for Joe? Because they KNOW each other…?
Of COURSE CAA’s flack thinks it’s ‘weird’ you’re reporting this. It’s a non-story.
I read your site every day, Nikki. This isn’t like you, you’re a LOT better reporter than this. Pull your head out and get back to work, we need you.
The issue isn’t that “Joe Francis makes porn.” He doesn’t make porn, and there are plenty of pornographers I would feel fine about my agent partying with. It’s not for me, but I don’t think that porn automatically demeans women (or men, for that matter).
But Joe Francis abuses women. He dislikes them and he wants to hurt them. His entire business model is about taking advantage of really young, really drunk girls. Yeah, I find that creepy. Yeah, I find it creepy that Huvane is apparently pally with the guy.
I’m glad Nikki reported on this. I hope Huvane’s clients ask him what’s up with this.
