I’m told that tonight MTV’s Tony DiSanto is still very busy denying to Hollywood that he is replacing Dawn Ostroff as head of The CW. I first heard from sources three weeks ago that Dawn was out, and Tony was in, following rounds of not-so-secret meetings with possible candidates
for the network run jointly by Warner Bros and CBS. Then silence. The “explanation” making the rounds was that DiSanto, who’s been a very big deal at MTV for more than a decade, was still negotiating his CW deal. Well, DiSanto this week had a puff piece written about him where he said he isn’t leaving MTV. But today, this CW rumor went from a whisper to the talk of the town. So why? “Someone is really pushing this story hard,” says a CBS insider. ”But I believe the person who told me it’s not happening.” And the bigtime TV power-players also think it’s smoke, not fire. Perhaps it’s karma that DiSanto (EVP of series, development and animation for MTV and
head of programming for MTV2), has to work overtime to dispel the chatter. After all, this is the guy responsible for some of the most-talked-about swill on MTV, like Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, Run’s House, The Hills, 8th and Ocean, The Andy Milonakis Show, and TRL with Carson Daly (thus foisting that no-talent on all of us…). Whereas Ostroff got her job by the skin of her teeth after programming as badly as she could at the old UPN and brown-nosing Les Moonves who was making a power-play move on Barry Meyer. Nevertheless Hollywood folk fail upwards: I’m told Dawn could end up running Oprah’s new cable network.

Just when you think that the CW can’t get any worse — they’re going to fire Dawn Ostroff for . . . the guy whose programming tastes NO ONE should emulate. Ever.

I miss Jamie Tarses.
MTV2 was one of the best cable networks till they turned it into MTV-Light with the reality shows and the MTV rejects. A bloody shame since that had at one time had hundreds of obscure videos every day.
per internal sources at MTV, Disanto is 100% going to be replacing Ostroff
it’s already a done deal
Goodbye, Dawn. I will never forgive you for personally cancelling Everwood.
S’long Ostroff. Perhaps Lori Openden, head of CW’s talentless casting can accompany you.
Thank you ladies for your contribution to the stupification of America.
Is the CW really a network?
To be a real network you need at least three letters in your name.
All I have to say is, it’s about time.
Not only did she try and destroy Supernatural, she tried to change the focus of Smallville, from Clark to Kara. Yeah like that went over very well. Now she wants to change Reaper by focusing on relationships to the mix (Supernatural knock off) as if it worked for Supernatural, when she tried it there.
She needed to be gone last season, at least now with a male in charge; they might be able to appreciate their male oriented programming a little more. And focus on them for a change. They have one of the best drama’s on Television and yet they ignore it because it’s not about sex and teenagers…
The only CW-related rumor I want to hear is that this sorry excuse for a network is going off the air once and for all.

Is the dead WB really a network?
To be a real network you need at least three letters in your name.
To me and a lot of people, the WB was a real network, and then there was its dying moment. That was an ultimate example of class for a network that knew how to do everything from run promos to programming. Sure there were a few bumps along the way, but the core WB team knew how to do their jobs.
In contrast, UPN relied on the Star Trek crutch before Dawn Ostroff came aboard over there. All she did is make sure UPN was a failure to the point that only drunks like Barney Gumble of the Simpsons would watch (and that joke wasn’t very funny to begin with). For the record, Dawn tried and failed to turn network into a carbon copy of Lifetime or the WB (take your pick).
At the merger, it is very clear that Dawn took control of the network and all that happened is that Dawn and Les Moonves created the CW Network so that it would fail. Tony DiSanto will likely ensure that the network will fail. At the merger, Dawn scuttled all the WB and UPN development when that shouldn’t have been done. Sure there was an excuse saying that there would be a mash-up of both networks, but that isn’t an excuse for cancelling development and letting both networks have one last hurrah before merging. That last hurrah clearly meant that the WB and UPN would have one more year as separate networks before the merger.
What? Were Dawn and Les afraid that if the WB got one last season, it would be a good one, and Time Warner would have a chance to pull out of the merger while allowing the WB to continue.
Here is what I predict would be the final seasons for both networks if they were allowed one more season. (Most of this info is from WB and UPN created archives I created myself. New shows are taken from The Futon Critic archives.)
WB Schedule
Sunday
7:00 PM: Reba (encores)
7:30 PM: Reba (encores)
8 PM: One Tree Hill (New Time)
9 PM: Tribe (About 5 reject cops who form an uncover unit of the LAPD) (New Show)
Comment: Moving One Tree Hill to Sunday is best for the show while Tribe only compliments the night since men are most likely to watch.
Monday
8 PM: Everwood (New Time)
9 PM: City of Gold (New Show)
Comment: City of Gold isn’t the next Indiana Jones, but both shows mesh well, and the WB could be starting something new with this series. (No wonder why Dawn wanted the merger to be complete ASAP.)
Tuesday
8 PM: Gilmore Girls (Last Season)
9 PM: Juniper Hall (New Show)
Comment: Juniper Hall is likely the forerunner of Gossip Girl, but since Gossip Girl doesn’t exist, Juniper Hall is a show that should easily follow Gilmore Girls.
Wednesday
8 PM: Midnighters (New Show)
9 PM: Supernatural (New Time)
Comment: Putting Midnighters and Supernatural together is a no-brainer. Both shows should work to the point that they give NBC headaches.
Thursday
8 PM: Smallville
9 PM: Aquaman Project (New Show)
Comment: Here is where we have failure. The only good thing about the merger is that it kept the Aquaman project from seeing the light of day on the CW schedule.
Friday
8:00 PM: Brandy Project (New Show)
8:30 PM: Reba (New Time)
9:00 PM: Modern Men
9:30 PM: Weekend (New Show)
Comment: Not a weak night, but Weekend is the most questionable show. Still, Brandy should have been a hit (yet another reason why Dawn wanted the merger to be complete ASAP), and Modern Men deserves another season to prove itself.
Midseason: The Body Politic, Mommies Who Drink, Nick Lachey Project
UPN Schedule
Monday
8:00 PM: All of Us (New Time)
8:30 PM: Cuts (New Time)
9:00 PM: Everybody Hates Chris (New Time)
9:30 PM: Girlfriends Spin-off (New Show)
Comment: All that is being moved is deadweight and Chris. Still Everybody Hates Chris deserves the anchor spot.
Tuesday
8 PM: America’s Next Top Model (Encores)
9 PM: Daisy Mayer Auction House Project (Young Woman) (New Show)
Comment: Hanging this drama against the Top Model encore is risky, but it could fare better than Veronica Mars.
Wednesday
8 PM: America’s Next Top Model
9 PM: On the Edge (Drama about a young Female DA) (New Show)
Comment: Good lineup, but On the Edge could be risky regarding the fact that one is a reality show and the other is a scripted drama.
Thursday
8:00 PM: Love Inc. (New Time)
8:30 PM: Alicia Keys Project (New Show)
9:00 PM: Eve
9:30 PM: Out of Sync (Lance Bass and Joey Fatone Reality Hybrid comedy) (New Show)
Comment: Pretty good lineup on a weak Night.
Friday
8 PM: WWE Smackdown
Midseason: Tanner Hall, Darren Star Project
*stands up and claps*
It’s about time!
Now lets hope Tony can pull this station out of the mess that idiot woman made of it!
If another network took on “Supernatural”, the CW could close its doors tomorrow for all I care. What a horrendous network.
Am I the only one that noticed that on Gossip Girl, the name of the Drug Rehab clinic central to the show is called “the Ostroff Centre”?
Like CW will won’t be gone in a few years regardless of who is at the helm. Broadcast television is a dinosaur.
JJS,
Yes, that was done on purpose.
I think its too late for a new person to be put in charge as the new year’s schedule has already been put in place so what can a new “director” do now apart from watching it all fall apart!
If we are talking about dinosaurs then it’s time for Michael Roberts (Head of Current Programming) to be let go as well. The man is in his 50s and breaking stories for 18 year olds. As a former producer who worked with the man at The WB as well as The CW I can say personally that he is living in another era. Bring some new people in…..
I too STRONGLY agree with MB.
BYE BYE DAWN!!!!!!!!! It’s about time this woman is replaced. I too, can never forgive her for canceling the best show television had to offer.
- Long Live EVERWOOD!
Dawn Ostroff <—-(what an F’n joke!)
Mr. DiSanto, I hope you’ll remember that American and Canadian family’s need good quality programs not filled with on going sex and violence. I’d respect and follow anyone who acknowledges that this world is in need of good quality programming! Good luck!
Shawn
The WB was the classiest network. They honored their shows. I refused to watch any of the new shows on the CW once they cancelled Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars. In fact, I watch very little TV now in general because it seems like all the shows I likeed (even long running shows) just end abruptly. It’s like the TV execs don’t care that they’re turning people away from television.
Thank you especially to Ostroff for ruining TV.
I hate Dawn! Hope she gets what she deserves and I’m not talking about getting fired. Firing her is the best decision. She doesn’t deserve to have any kind of power. Stupid *****!
