The news just came in to me from my sources…. “They’re fighting for a back 13 at mid-season, but Moonlight is definitely not on the fall schedule. But it’s not dead, either.
Insiders tell me the sticking point is money: that CBS wants Warner Bros to “step up” more financially. But WBTV is saying back to CBS that the network has to step up as well, even though CBS doesn’t own the show. Here’s what I can tell you about the behind-the-scenes:
Moonlight has been fraught with problems (see below). But CBS’ Nina Tassler told the producers that she was “very happy” with the direction of the series. The show pitched her the stories for all next season, “and Nina loved them”. And then CBS gave the show its list of what the network wanted. But CBS made clear that the renewal of the show was “all going to be dependent on making the last four shows of this season ratings-wise. Well, those ratings were only fair. They didn’t win the night, but they won their demos. On the other hand, Friday’s ratings are always low. But the real story is, as usualy in Hollywood, all about the money. Even though comparatively Moonlight is being done on the cheap (especially when put up against another WBTV show, Pushing Daisies on ABC, which is a notoriously expensive production), and was picked up in the beginning by CBS for a relatively low licensing fee, CBS now wants Warner Bros to pick up more of the tab. There was a specific conversation between the two Big Media outfits about this on Wednesday of last week. “We need you to step up,” CBS reportedly told WB. To which WB responded to CBS, “You step up, and we’ll step up.” Interestingly, I hear that CBS just ordered to series the pilots The Mentalist and 11th hour which both have higher licensing fees than Moonlight. But the producers knew all along that their series was “on the bubble,” so to speak. And in response to communication pushing the network to pick up Moonlight, I understand that CBS responded to the effect, “Where’s WB? Why won’t they step up?”
Meanwhile, there have been other problems. Coming back from the writers strike, the executive producer and showrunner Chip Johanssen was cut loose, despite being a close friend of Tassler’s. Also, series creator Ron Koslow was shown the door after the picket signs went down. That left no official showrunners in place to guide the episodes produced after the strike ended. Husband and wife writers / producers Harry Werksman and Gabrielle Stanton were informally given the reins, and they supervised the most recent four shows ending the season. The question is whether they are up to the task. I hear the Moonlight producers offered to change showrnners to get a CBS renewal. Already, the fallout has led one of the few surviving players, staff writer and producer Jill Blotevogel, to be unceremoniously dumped before any renewal is announced. There’s a rumor which I haven’t confirmed that, if CBS does renew, it may bring the showrunners from the expected-to-be-cancelled Shark to come in and retool Moonlight.

Thanks Nikki for the update.
What did you mean by “not dead yet”?
What are the chances of revival after the upfronts?
surely a show with a small cast like this can’t be too expensive
WE WANT MOONLIGHT.
THE SHOW WON AN AWARD WHICH IS BETTER THAN ANY NEW-COMER YOU MIGHT REPLACE IT WITH. IT HAS A RESPECTABLE SIZED AUDIENCE AND CONSISTENTLY TAKES THE DEMO FOR THE 18-49 FEMALES…WHO, BY THE WAY, BUYS EVERYTHING THE HOUSEHOLD WANTS AND NEEDS!
THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for following this, Nikki. I’m one of the legions of fans following the Moonlight renewal craziness and I’m just desperate for more episodes.
The ratings haven’t been bad – they win the demos every time – and the cult value of this show is astronomical. You would be shocked the amount of money I’m willing to pour into Moonlight if only they’d let me.
I wish you could buy stock in TV shows, the fans would fund this show in a heartbeat.
so much controversy over such a dull, insipid show
tried to watch it twice, couldn’t get through it
CBS sucks ass
But if CBS cancels it can’t it jump to another network. What about CW or another network i think they will be thrilled to have a show with a rapid fanbase
We need moonlight. It sucks that its on fridays and no one really watches tv on fridays. I now look forward to moonlight and the weekend. Please keep moonlight around
I love Moonlight! Thanks for keeping us updated. I hope we hear good news.
It’s a great show! I want it back!
This is why I hate allowing myself to fall in love with a TV show. They always burn me. I’ll be finished with CBS if they screw me on this one.
Why can’t they just put this on the WB, er CW network?
Nikki, is there no chance CBS and WB will come to an agreement and Moonlight will be on the fall schedule or would the agreement only be for a back 13 at midseason? I just cannot believe this is happening. Just last week everyone said it was a done deal for renewal.
Thanks Nikki
We want Moonlight for season 2. I can’t beleive CBS & WB are doing this!
we want moonlight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!please
Being in the beloved 18 to 49 demo i can tell you if CBS has plans to pull the plug on Moonlight they will also loose myself as a viewer of Ghost Whisperer. Up yours CBS!
Moonlight is the best show on television and CBS does this? What are they thinking? And dumping Jill Blotevogel is just insane – she is one of the “heart and soul” of Moonlight. Da** politics! The fans want this show to continue, the story to continue, the romance to continue.
I, too, would buy stock in this show! Please, CBS and WB rethink this! Nielsen ratings do not show the whole picture – look at downloads, awards (PCA), even TVguide voting. Have you checked out comments on the Moonlight websites? What about the cast reception at Paley? You are missing the proverbial boat on this one!
Moonlight’s quality has consistently improved, episode over episode, so those that watched the first 3 episodes, should watch the rest before writing the show off. Unlike Bionic Woman, that started off horribly and got worse, Moonlight started off on shaky ground and then continously improved. The last 4 episodes show that Harry Werksman and Gabrielle Stanton have what it takes to produce/create/write a great show as I think those were some of the best episodes yet. Moonlight has won the demo for its timeslot each time and while there is a dip in ratings between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs, I think that’s easy enough to address next year, as I’m sure there are many viewers that probably didn’t give it a chance after the first one or two episodes, but would probably be willing to check it out to see if it’s improved next year. For those viewers that did stick around, Moonlight has been consistently be able to hold onto them, episode over episode, which makes it worth renewal, IMO. While it may not get the ratings of GW or Numb3rs, it has a strong fan base, great numbers in the 18-49 demo category and it’s solid performance show that the viewers are willing to stick with the show. Try it on another night if necessary, the fans will follow as long as it’s promoted, but just renew it!
this day started out so well and now is just falling apart. i can’t take any more bad news about Moonlights renewal with CBS. CBS needs to get their act together and “bite the silver bullet” and support Moonlight. The fans have been screaming to get a second season. Blood has literally been spilled in the shows name and yet nothing from CBS.
Thanks for the info. I too agree, Moonlight is a Great show and deserves bettter treatment! I hope the ptb will listen to the fans (who have MONEY) and will spend it where & with whome they like. Moonlight needs a stable writing team/show runners so the ratings will increase. The fan base is solid, and should grow with the right team behind it.
WB can’t produce shows for the license fees. They are so top heavy with suits that they can’t make up their mind in time to compete at a cost effective level. The in fighting at the studio level is wasting money and time. On top of all that it is one of the most expensive places to produce a show with most of the overages coming from the studio itself. They need to broom the suits and let producers produce and writers write.
Oh man this is AWFUl news! Especially when everyone has been saying it was so likely to be renewed….I can’t believe this is happening!
What nonsense, isn’t the whole idea to win in that coveted demographic? Then why reject a show that does?! And why do they think the show needs new direction, it’s a great show, and the recent episodes have been some of the best yet! They’re obviously up to the task….
This is the only CBS show I watch–if they cancel it, then so much for that network for me….
So everything Nina Tassler was saying about Moonlight recently, giving the fans hope, she was just blowing smoke up our ass’s? Thank you so much. I hope SAG takes you for everything you’ve got during negotiations!!!!!!!!!!!!
Moonlight is the reason I watch CBS on Friday night, along with Ghost Whisperers and Numbers! The plot thickens each week and keeps you anticipating for the following week. The cast are absolutely amazing and worth renewing for another season. CBS, you have to renew Moonlight.
So, CBS was offering to change showrunners to get this mediocre series renewed?
Well, I’ve worked with Harry Werksman and Gabrielle Stanton and just let me say…
Ahhh, enough said.
Great parties though.
Blood has LITERALLY been spilled? Now you’re scaring me.
I agree. This sucks. Especially about Jill. She’s great. “What’s left behind” was one of the best episodes ever and she wrote it.They win their demo but don’t top ratings for Desperate Housewives or some other top tenner. Geez. What’s this about it being done on the cheap? Always thought everybody was complaining about cost anyway. It’s only season one folks. Remember NBC dumped JAG after it’s first episodes. CBS picked up the series and it took off for ten years! Come on, both CBS and WB, you’ve got a gem here. Polish it
