The news just came in to me from my sources…. “They’re fighting for a back 13 at mid-season, but Moonlight is definitely not on the fall schedule. But it’s not dead, either.
Insiders tell me the sticking point is money: that CBS wants Warner Bros to “step up” more financially. But WBTV is saying back to CBS that the network has to step up as well, even though CBS doesn’t own the show. Here’s what I can tell you about the behind-the-scenes:
Moonlight has been fraught with problems (see below). But CBS’ Nina Tassler told the producers that she was “very happy” with the direction of the series. The show pitched her the stories for all next season, “and Nina loved them”. And then CBS gave the show its list of what the network wanted. But CBS made clear that the renewal of the show was “all going to be dependent on making the last four shows of this season ratings-wise. Well, those ratings were only fair. They didn’t win the night, but they won their demos. On the other hand, Friday’s ratings are always low. But the real story is, as usualy in Hollywood, all about the money. Even though comparatively Moonlight is being done on the cheap (especially when put up against another WBTV show, Pushing Daisies on ABC, which is a notoriously expensive production), and was picked up in the beginning by CBS for a relatively low licensing fee, CBS now wants Warner Bros to pick up more of the tab. There was a specific conversation between the two Big Media outfits about this on Wednesday of last week. “We need you to step up,” CBS reportedly told WB. To which WB responded to CBS, “You step up, and we’ll step up.” Interestingly, I hear that CBS just ordered to series the pilots The Mentalist and 11th hour which both have higher licensing fees than Moonlight. But the producers knew all along that their series was “on the bubble,” so to speak. And in response to communication pushing the network to pick up Moonlight, I understand that CBS responded to the effect, “Where’s WB? Why won’t they step up?”
Meanwhile, there have been other problems. Coming back from the writers strike, the executive producer and showrunner Chip Johanssen was cut loose, despite being a close friend of Tassler’s. Also, series creator Ron Koslow was shown the door after the picket signs went down. That left no official showrunners in place to guide the episodes produced after the strike ended. Husband and wife writers / producers Harry Werksman and Gabrielle Stanton were informally given the reins, and they supervised the most recent four shows ending the season. The question is whether they are up to the task. I hear the Moonlight producers offered to change showrnners to get a CBS renewal. Already, the fallout has led one of the few surviving players, staff writer and producer Jill Blotevogel, to be unceremoniously dumped before any renewal is announced. There’s a rumor which I haven’t confirmed that, if CBS does renew, it may bring the showrunners from the expected-to-be-cancelled Shark to come in and retool Moonlight.

Well this is unfortunate. USA Network has a great one-two punch on Fridays with Monk & Psych; the only reason I gave that up was because I started watching Moonlight and Ghost Whisperer before it (Numb3rs is a show I routinely watch.). Should CBS take Moonlight out of the equation for whatever reason, I’ll still watch Numb3rs on Friday, but I’ll be tuned into another network for something else before it comes on because frankly, without Moonlight to shore up its paranormal offerings on Fridays, the lineup feels a little weak to me. I am certainly not that attached to Ghost Whisperer without the lure of Moonlight afterward.

I *loved* Jill’s writing on “What’s Left Behind”.
How could they let her go?
I love this show so much.
C’mon CBS, you have a good thing here -
it doesn’t need “retooling”.
We want Moonlight! I want Moonlight!!! Moonlight did win its time slot for CBS. They have stayed consistent in their ratings and helped CBS to win the night!
I cannot believe that all we have been through with Moonlight and all the hype that it was more than likely being renewed that it comes down to this. If CBS doesn’t renew Moonlight, I will not watch CBS on Friday nights! And if they cancel Moonlight they will have some very mad, rabid Moonlight fans to contend with as we will not go down without a fight!
Come on CBS, listen to the viewers! We WANT MOONLIGHT!!! Give us a full 2nd season pick up!!!
i think she’s referring to the blood drive when she talks about blood “literally” being spilled.
Moonlight is the best and if CBS cannot see that, then I cannot see CBS ANYMORE! Renew Moonlight, PLEASE! Recognize that it is a treasure and should be treated as such.
It wins the demo, but it’s smushed in between two other shows that win the demo. And it loses viewers from the show before it and and about 2 million viewers jump in to watch the show that follows it. It’s the weak link of the night. That’s why it’s not on the fall schedule. CBS canceled Close to Home which did better than ML in both total viewers and the demo.
Ok…so i came into the series around episode 11 and after i saw it i was up all night looking for the next previous episodes that i had missed. If cbs cancels moonlight they will lose not only me but im sure many viewers. I also watch ghost whisper and if moonlight goes…so do i. so cbs needs to get there heads on straight and just give us the second season.
Just how does this renewals system work? I admit that I’m shocked that Moonlight is not coming back because the negative trend seems to be something from out of the blue!
As far as CBS’s inclination are concerned, I’m looking at new episodes, a new message board, positive feedback from TPTB thus far, increased promotional coverage, just to name a few.
And then there’s all those attributes the show has managed to garner on it’s own: a PCA award, stable ratings, a cult following that came back after a four month hiatus, the blood drive publicity, all those TV guide awards [sure, why not?]. And most importantly, it wins the timeslot and the demo every week. It’s inexpensive to make and the episodes are just getting better.
So what more does a show need to do to stay on the air?
I don’t know if it matters but Moonlight has aired 3 of the last four episodes and they did win their timeslot for CBS during Sweepos.
Maybe they want higher ratings and I was confident they would get there. It is difficult to get all the way back with a new show after the strike. I hope CBS gives Moonlight the chance.
CBS is making a big mistake if they cancel Moonlight. It is one of the only shows that appeal to a younger demographic. They hardly promoted it, its only promotion came from word of mouth, and it still won the PCA. CBS has not given Moonlight the chance it deserved to become a ratings giant.
This is the first network show that I have watched religiously since The West Wing. This show is exactly what you would want as you are going into the weekend: entertaining and fun. Please don’t try to attempt another show in its place, you won’t get such devoted fans on any other show you try. And lets have more storylines with Josef…the character is an untapped resourse!
This sucks! With all that I’d been reading lately, I was confident “Moonlight” would be renewed. I can’t believe it all comes down to a p***ing contest between CBS and WB over money. I like “Ghost Whisperer” too, and it only does slightly better in the ratings. Yet there was never any question that it would get renewed. I hope all of CBS’s expensive new shows fail miserably!
This day turned out to be so heartbreaking. MOONLIGHT is like a once-in-a-lifetime show for me. How did the show prospect go from “all but certain” just a few days ago to this?? The show has given me, and according to the views expressed in countless websites from rabid followers a lot of joy and time to reflect. Please give us Season 2 already.
A show about a good-guy vampire who works as a private investigator roaming the streets of Los Angeles helping out? Hmmm, this premise sounds really really familiar, wasn’t this show called…..ANGEL???
“Moonlight” is the ultimate in hack writing and I hope it isn’t resurrected.
This show is good and I think it would be a shame to lose it. It seems the very few shows I like get taken off. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Moonlight has captured my heart and I hope CBS sees what a jewel they have. It’s the only show I watch on CBS and I’m there every Friday night. Keep it on and I’ll be back for more
Tom – watch a show before calling it a hack. I enjoyed Angel very much, and was dubious about Moonlight…but beyond the surface premise about a vamp detective, there is absolutely nothing these two shows have in common.
Moonlight is one of the best shows out there- Don’t these CBS exec’s watch their own shows? if so, how could they cancel this show. How can they not pay attention to what the fans have and are willing to do to keep this show on the air. We give Blood. We vote- hence PCA and TvGuide awards. they want money.. keep this show on the air. give us Memorabilia to purchase and the fans will keep you in the money.. Have They even looked at YouTube? I agree with many here. Without Moonlight I don’t have a reason to keep watching CBS. I Like Ghost Whisperer and Numbers and for 3 hours I will stay in on Friday- Without Moonlight- I’ll look elsewhere for a good time. PLEASE CBS Listen to the Fans. This show is a Diamond in the Rough and has so much potential!
I started watching Ghost Whisper and Numb3rs because they bookend Moonlight. I won’t watch them if Moonlight is gone. And after this I refuse to ever again try out a new network show again; I’ll just wait to rent them on DVD if they make it to DVD. I started watching Moonlight against my better judgment because from the start it was on the bubble, and I had this feeling I would fall in love with it. I did. It’s been like a love affair and what I’ve done more for this show with supporting various drives, polls, petitions, posting online, etc. I’ve never done before for any other show. This is the first CBS show I’ve watched regularly in years and the first network show I’ve been hooked on in 10 years. I guess it’s true having a love affair ultimately will break your heart. Today’s my birthday, and the bad news about Moonlight chances of renewal was my big birthday treat. Happy birthday to me. Thanks so much CBS! Between this and all but one friend forgetting this is my birthday, this was my worst birthday ever.
Dear CBS & WB
Please play nice with your toys. Give MOONLIGHT a second season. I know it is all about the money. But sometime you have to bite the bullet (not silver yet). Please you have the power to make MILLIONS happy, and we won’t take your name in vain. I love Friday, Moonlight, but will take it any night I can get it.
I don’t like Ghost Whisper because it is basically the same every week. As for numbers, there is only 1 actor worth watching on that show and if I have had a big week, I turn it off and go to sleep. But there isn’t anything or anyone who could keep me from Moonlight. I have turned down dates for Friday night because of it, believe me that means I LOVE it.
Do We Love Our Vampire???

Show your support of Moonlight like never before. For Moonlight. For yourselves. For me because my sanity is teetering on the edge of the abyss. *Geronimo!*
Please. There is so much crap on TV now. Can’t there be room for Moonlight? It’s the highlight of my week. Best show ever.
Dear CBS,
Please give “Moonlight” the chance it deserves. It is my favorite show and I watch CBS all the time.
NCIS, Without a Trace, Whost Whisper and of course “Moonlight.” There was so many silly shows on the air now and “Moonlight” is different. Of course, like alot of woman I love Alex O’Loughlin but I am also a older woman. This show has me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. Please, please bring the show back in the fall of 2008.
Sincerely,
Virginia Baird
