Within days of USA Network renewing Law & Order: Criminal Intent with an order for 16 episodes, the series has just lost its showrunner. I’m told Warren Leight has left to be the showrunner of HBO’s In Treatment. It’s a big blow to Bonnie Hammer, promoted two months ago to head the newly created NBCU Cable Entertainment & Cable Studio. The former USA Network/Sci Fi Channel boss had been in the midst of hammering out a new deal with Leight, under whose leadership CI was the top drama series in basic cable primetime for the fourth quarter, more than doubling USA’s audience in the 10 p.m. Thursday slot from the same period the previous year. The first-run CI segments last fall averaged about 4.1 million viewers and about 2 million adults 18-49. By contrast, HBO’s In Treatment has struggled to find an audience since its January 28th premiere bombed with only 446,000 viewers. To drum up interest in the first time an HBO series has been stripped Monday-Friday, the pay channel has been putting full and free episodes on the Internet. So Leight will face quite an uphill battle. The Tony Award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and film director joined the staff of CI in its 2nd season on a tip from Theresa Rebeck to then executive producer Rene Balcer, who subsequently recommended Leight to takeover as the show’s executive producer and head writer in 2006 when Balcer left at the end of the fifth season.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

If HBO is hiring a showrunner for In Treatment, is it then safe to assume the show’s coming back for a second season? I hope so; the show is brilliantly addictive.
Well our loss is Alden’s gain. Can’t blame Warren for leaving ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ for a better deal over at ‘In Treatment’. Warren will be missed by the fans over at the USA CI board. And he’s admired by the USA gang for being one of the showrunners who hung tough during the WGA strike for a better deal for all the writers.
No word as yet from my sources as to who the next CI showrunner but looking forward to hearing who Nikki thinks it might be
A devastating blow to CI as Leight, with ‘D’Onofrio , crafted a terrific character in Bobby Goren … now, it will be interesting to see where the character goes. That show last season with Roy Scheider was stunningly good. As giood as anything I;’ve seen ever on TV! Sceider could be Goren’s father!
Leight will be missed by this viewer … and, fan.
HBO gots them DEEEEP pockets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If this could somehow result in the original showrunner, Rene Balcer, returning to CI it would definitely work out for the best. Especially with CI’s slightly shortened season he might be able to work on both this and the “Mothership” L & O.
Good luck to Mr. Leight in any event.
Please do tell – who will be the next Criminal Intent showrunner?
Could they have finessed Mr Balcer back? Or did Leight irreparably defile his ‘baby’?
