SUNDAY AM: Here are the official box office numbers — Sex And The City finished its opening weekend No. 1 with North American domestic gross of $55.7 million in 3,285 theaters. The R-rated female romantic comedy posted a great $16,968 per screen average even though many multiplexes had it playing on 7+ screens.
But after a female phenomenal Friday opening of $26.9M, the pic plunged 34% to make only $17.7 million on Saturday. And Sunday estimates expect another 37% downturn for $11.1 million. So on both Saturday and Sunday, the romantic comedy will be beaten by Paramount’s Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull which playing in 4,264 venues earned $12.2M on Friday, $19.8M Saturday and an estimated $13.9M Sun for a weekend total of $46M, which was -54% from its Memorial Weekend debut. But because of steady business, it’s made a cumulative $216.8M. That’s exactly what Hollywood pros had been warning about: that Sex And The City would be a one-day, and one-weekend, wonder with no legs. But it still opened as the biggest R-rated comedy motion picture (beating American Pie 2‘s $45.1M) and the 5th biggest R-rated film ever released (behind The Matrix, The Passion Of The Christ, 300, and Hannibal). The only female-driven movie to come close to SATC in box office was the Hannah Montana movie, but there’s no comparable R-rated chick flick.
So I’ve just heard that Warner Bros is already planning for the Sex And The City sequel! ”It’s the only female movie that’s created a frenzy,” a top Warner Bros exec told me this morning. “To me, this is a cultural phenomenon. Hats off to Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker and their team because they dug in their hooks and knew how to make it work.” According to the exit polling I’ve obtained, an incredible 85% of the audience for the movie’s opening Friday were women, and of those 80% were over the age of 25. Warner Bros claims to be seeing repeat business already. On Saturday, the audience was 75% females, who came back with boyfriends and husbands in tow. That’s why the studio feels the pic is “extremely well positioned” to keep making money. Only the numbers will tell.
Thanks to counter-programming against Sex, the 3rd-place shocker this weekend was Rogue Pictures/ Universal’s horror pic The Strangers which opened with $20.7 million from 2,466 theatres for a big per theatre average of $8,397. That’s far above industry expectations and the biggest opening gross ever for a Rogue Pictures film, and its negative cost is only $9M. Amazingly, this flick also posted Universal Pictures highest opener of 2008 (more than Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s $17.7M). According to exit stats, the audience was about evenly divided male and female (49% male vs. 51% female); under 25 yrs of age = 62%; 25 yrs of age and older = 38%; ethnically diverse, with slightly less than half Caucasian (47%), followed by Hispanic, African American, Asian, and “other.”
Here’s the Top 10 chart as of Sunday AM:
1. Sex And The City (HBO Films/New Line/WB) — 3-day Wkd: $55.7M, Cume: $55.7M
2. Indiana Jones 4 (Paramount) — 3-Day Wkd: $46M, Cume: $216.8M
3. The Strangers (Universal) — 3-day Wkd $20.7M, Cume: $20.7M
4. Iron Man (Paramount) — 3-Day Wkd: $140M, Cume: $276.6M
5. Chronicles of Narnia 2 (Disney) — 3-Day Wkd: $13M, Cume: $115.6M
6. What Happens In Vegas (Fox) — 3-Day Wkd: $6.8M, Cume: $66M
7. Baby Mama (Universal) — 3-Day Wkd: $2.2M, Cume: $56.1M
8. Speed Racer (Warner Bros) — 3-Day Wkd: $2.1M, Cume: $40.5M
9. Made Of Honor (Sony) — 3-Day Wkd: $2M, Cume: $42.9M
10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Universal) — 3-Day Wkd: $1M, Cume: $60.4M
SATURDAY 10:30 PM: Sources tell me that Sex And The City is pacing to be down 30% today from Friday. This is exactly what Hollywood pros were warning during yesterday’s frenzied female-driven opening that produced phenomenonal box office numbers. The result is that the HBO Films/ New Line/ Warner Bros romantic comedy may reign at No. 1 only one day. Because Saturday’s North American gross from Paramount’s Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull will be up 60% to 65% from Friday. So both SATC and Indy 4 are looking at right around $20 million for today. Still, with a huge $15.7M disparity in Friday’s numbers, Sex And The City is almost a sure thing to win this weekend: it’s already hauled in a big $46.9M compared with $32.2M for Indiana Jones. So it did in 2 days when movie analysts didn’t even think it could do in 3. But hopes that the pic could break $75M or even $70M this weekend now look more realistic at $60M-$65M. It comes down to Sunday’s real #s. Nevertheless, SATC will wear the crown for the biggest romantic comedy debut ever and bear the title of The Ultimate Chick Flick.

Stop using that stupid term “chick flick”
It perpetuates the problem, and is beneath your intelligence
It’s cool that they can do a successful movie where three aging women can hang out with their aunt and have all sorts of sex exploits. You’ve come a long way, baby!
One note about “per-screen” averages and multiplexes- the way that number gets so high is that multiplexes playing it on 4-5-6-7 screens only count as one “screen” in that number. A better way to look at it is a per-theater average. Just wanted to make sure that was clear.
Will drop 70-75% next weekend. Should have aired directly on HBO.
hilarious when they say it’s the only female driven movie that’s been a phenom
you could practically count the number of female driven movies made on one hand so they’re hardly drawing from a large sampling pool
also ironic is warner bros. made this movie – home of the clooney-loving. women-bashers
hello, lover!
god i hope that there’s a sequel!!..oh hell just bring the show back!
Hooray for the gals! The show was fun, and so was the film (albeit a tad long). The male pundits didn’t get it, the film was targeted to two audiences that are very loyal but often overlooked by Hollywood: the over 25 female, and the gay community. Give them what they want, and they will spread the word in support of the film. I expect it will topo $100M in theatres before having a successful DVD run.
SATC was fabulous! Although I am a pretty die hard SATC fan, this is the first movie that in a long time, was an actual priority for me to see in theatres, and on opening weekend. Normally, I just don’t even care too much about going to the movies at all – because 1/2 the time it’s not worth it. You can tell that they put a lot of thought into this film and stayed true to the show, and I think the fans appreciated it. I’ll be buying this on DVD for sure!
will end up making more than next sandler, myers, farrell & carrell movies. FOR SURE.
Chick flick it is indeed. And what a FLICK it was.
Told ya it will gross around 50M-ish! Great return for a Chick Flick. Hopefully Hollywood will produce intelligent chick-flicks that would attract the ladies (No more ‘The Sweetest Thing’ pls)
I do think next week drop will be sizeable given its massive 1st day take. Its weekday takes will give us a better indication.
Wow! The Strangers came out of nowhere and got 20M just like that. I mean, everybody was expecting less than 10M, some goimg as far as saying 5M. It must be that good eh! Well, its on my list of movies to see ( not including ‘dumb-male-flick’ ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ had enuf of the same formula Judd applies to all his releases.)
“Chick Flick” is not a bad term, it is infact…the truth! I base this solely on the percentages noted above of how many women attended the movie.

BS, somehow your comment is making me nervous, cause I am afraid you might right afterall. I got this weird feeling some are tired of the same formula recycled by these so call ‘A-listers;.
Carrel new movie ‘Get Smart’ is one to watch out for cause from the traliers, seems not funny at all.
I won’t mess with Sandler (pun intended) cause of his B.O track record speaks for himself and his legion of fans out there willing to pay to see his many comedic roles. I like him enough to say ’50 First dates’ is one of my fav.
Myers, I just hope he has not lost his Mojo yet.
Farrell, unless he goes the direction of Robin Williams, he is going to pigeon-holed himself with the same character in all his movies. Same can be said for Sandler but with one distinction, Sandler got his co-stars to help make the differences in his movies, whereas Farrell is only with himself.
Well, just my 2 cents worth. Lu-ee, any comments?
will end up making more than next sandler, myers, farrell & carrell movies. FOR SURE.
Well, the only one I’d question SatC outgrossing is the Sandler movie. If they didn’t put all the funny moments in the trailer (it’s possible), then I’d say that Sandler will end up with the biggest comedy of the summer. Meyer’s movie looks like a complete bomb in the making, and I don’t hold out much hope for Carell’s movie either. Haven’t seen a trailer yet for Farrell’s movie, so can’t comment.
I think Strangers got 20 million because the guys went to see the movie while girls wanted sex. Translation, it is hard to not to describe SATC as a Chick Flick.
As for June, here are the wide releases.
June 6th
Kung Fu Panda: Should be a good kiddie flick, and it would be hard pressed to predict that Panda will not beat Speed Racer.
Don’t Mess With the Zohan: Good escapist fare unless you are Arab.
Prediction: Expect Zohan and Panda to battle for the top spot.
June 13th
The Happening: Yet another terrorism type movie that should sink like a stone.
The Incredible Hulk: I don’t think that Hulk will be a major hit.
Prediction: Last Week’s winner should finish #1 again.
June 20th
Get Smart: Modern update on the classic series, saw three trailers, and unlike Armand, laughed at them.
The Love Guru: Looks like something that Bollywood rejected, and this is total trash.
Prediction: Get Smart should be a cash cow on the weekend, but will be hampered by Kit Kittredge/American Girl.
June 27th
WALL-E: Ok movie, but will the non-robot audience love it? All signs point to maybe.
Wanted: What is the point to this movie other than a chance to see Angelina Jolie?
Prediction: Get Smart and WALL-E fight it out for the top spot.
The movie isn’t that great, honestly. It is a drag, literally. They should have never made this movie. I know they are smiling ear to ear with glim because it opened at #1, but it was hype only. A sequel WILL fail.

Love what you wrote. My take as follows:
June 6th
Panda is a sure-fire hit, given the last kiddie-flick was in March (Dr Seuss)
Zohan will be big of course, given that Sandler’s last 5 pics have grossed on average of 125M but the same can be said of Dreamworks cartoon fares.
Panda winning the crown on the 1st weekend and a final bigger gross
June 13th
I have to agree with you on this. Somehow the return of Hulk is too soon, given it is stil fresh in my mind of ‘Lee Ang’s Brokeback Hulk’ version a few yrs ago. Worst, they still have yet to explain and probably won’t of Hilk’s pants mystery.
June 20th
I do hope you are right on this one. I mean, I don’t hate that guy or anything but seriously, I could not find anything funny watching him trying to wiggle himself out from the phone booth, throwing his shoe to the bloke from Borat as a weapon andaccidentally pulled down the beads and having them rattled on the floor. If we’re to laugh just purely base on his facial expression, then I say give me Carrey anytime. Carrel just can’t pull it off.
June 27th
WALL-E. Period!
Omgoodness. the movie was amazing and had the closure all us women wanted. you can tell alot of thought was put into making this film and I was very impressed. People criticized about how the movie didnt show how deep there bond was, but the movie was made for the true SATC fans, so tuff shit for those who didn’t get it.
we(SATC) the fans know the love these girls have for each other and I salute Mr. King and SJP for there commitment.
the movie was amazing, but the only reason that Indiana Jones is making more, is because of the rating. The only thing thats holding back from teens.
Hilarious that women willingly pigeonhole themselves with the phrase chick flick , like they are some sort of rarefied category. Women are the majority of the population
When men flock to see a movie, it is not regarded as a specially-named phenom to be studied like a rare species in the wild.
It is indeed a dumb expression, and those who use it sound dumb (sorry, Nikki, you are extremely intelligent but you are not one to mindlessly follow the flock)
The drop was interesting – Personally, I was going to wait until next weekend because of all the hype about insane crowds. The only reason I saw it this weekend was because I could do Arclight at 10am on Sunday – and even that proved almost not a good plan, as I thought no one would be up yet (Seriously, it’s L.A.!) and I ended up in row Y, not centered. I may go back again to watch it from the center of the theater.
Anyway, I’m not a big Sex & the City fan – only ever saw it on TBS, and probably only half the episodes – and I *loved* the film. Seriously blown away by the screenplay and the themes. I could probably list ten things right off the top of my head that I was over the moon about in terms of theme and story.
It was an awesome experience to watch a big film that was so smart and full of adult themes. The only thing that makes me sad is the whole negative marketing to men thing. It really seemed to have a lot to appeal to both sexes, but when it’s put out there that “men won’t go” or “poor men who get dragged to it,” then of course some men won’t go, and it’s really too bad because there’s a lot there about relationships that’s of interest to both sexes.
TJ-
I know my friends represent only a small part of the movie-going audience but from what I’ve seen/heard, most are interested in Get Smart and The Pineapple Express, a few are interested in The Love Guru and I have yet to meet anyone that wants to see Don’t Mess with the Zohan.
Jessy S.-
The Happening is by M. Night Shymalan, maker of Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense, Signs and several other subsequent bombs. I highly doubt it’s about terrorism and don’t see how you could get that from the trailer. Lady in the Water was the worst movie I’ve seen in a long time, but that opened to $18 million and went on to gross over $40 mil (according to boxofficemojo.com) so I wouldn’t count it out just yet.
The only thing more far-fetched than seeing Shia Lebeaf (sp?) swinging through the trees ala Tarzan in “Indiana Jones” is seeing four women who are not stabbing each other in the back the way most women I know personally behave toward their “best friends”.
Is there a movie about middle aged men chasing tail which would be similar to this movie? I’ve seen a lot of stupid teen movies with the same plot but I can’t recall a similar movie with aging (male) horndogs.
So yeah, I saw the Strangers, not because Indy 4 or Sex and the City were sold out, but rather I wanted to.
Which should account for most of the audience. It’s a smart horror/suspense flick with good performances from all of the cast.
Ain’t nuthin’ so American as sex!
Luvya,
Dubya
