SUNDAY AM: The No. 1 movie was Warner Bros’ mediocre laffer Get Smart, which opened in 3,911 theaters to a better-than-expected $39.1 million weekend.
(The studio had been projecting $35M.) Exit polling showed the audience was split evenly male-female and skewed older, with 60% aged 25 or older — no doubt because of the original Mel Brooks-Buck Henry TV series. Many in Hollywood had made a fuss over the fact that this retread starring Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 was competing head to head for North American box office gross against another even worse comedy, Paramount’s moronic The Love Guru, because the two studios felt they couldn’t find another open date all summer. But it wasn’t a fair fight. The vehicle for Mike Myers’ return to the Big Screen after a long absence was filled with toilet humor, dick jokes and midget gags. It bombed badly, debuting at just No. 4 in 3,012 venues for an embarrassingly low $14 million weekend. (As one studio insider described the situation succinctly, “Ugh.”) But there’s a big difference in the two pics’ negative costs: $100M vs $60M, respectively. I’m also told that Warner Bros vastly outspent Paramount on marketing their comedy, $50M to $35M, which as Get Smart‘s release neared began to be advertised on the back of The Rock’s popularity in order to draw non-Caucasians — a strategy that seems to have worked. As for The Love Guru, it was aiming for a much younger audience aged 12 to 17 — but even they could smell a stinker. On Friday, Get Smart beat The Love Guru by $13.3M compared to $5.3M. And on Saturday, early numbers widened the gulf from $14.3M to $4.7M.
Meanwhile, newcomer Kit Kittredge, the Picturehouse American Girl movie, outperformed. Though platforming in just 5 theaters, it scored an incredible per-screen average of $19,731 Friday. Theaters in cities that American Girl stores were charging $20 a movie ticket to include a promotional lunch, souvenir and gift. But on Saturday, The Grove still did over $20,000 with normally priced tickets, I’m told. (So why didn’t the pic open wide this weekend instead of July 2nd to get out of WALL-E‘s way?) Warner Bros is already plotting out its newest franchise (usurped from Picturehouse, which is shuttering). No surprise, given the massive Warner Bros DVD sales of the three prior American Girl made-for-TV movies. Kit Kittredge the movie cost only $9 million and will be in profit at just $27 million including P&A. So, given the DVD projections, this could be a cash cow. (See my previous, Who’s Adopted This Orphaned Cash Cow?)
The No. 2 movie for the weekend was DreamWorks Animation / Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda which in 4,053 plays finished with a $21.7M weekend and new cume of $155.5M after Sunday thanks to the Saturday kiddie matinee bump. (It made $6.2M Friday and $8.5M Saturday. Holdover The Incredible Hulk self-financed by Marvel and distributed by Universal was No. 3 with a 21.5M weekend from 3,508 runs (-61% from its opening a week ago) and a new $96.4M cume after Sunday. (It made $6.6M Friday and $8.4M Saturday.)
The rest of the Top 10 were holdovers. Fox’s holdover horrow flick The Happening from M Night Shyamalan was No. 5 earning a 10M weekend from 2,986 theaters (-67% from its debut a week ago) and new $50.2M cume after Sunday. The Spielberg/Lucas fourquel Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull for Paramount came in No. 6 with an $8.4M weekend and $290.8M cume. At No. 7, Sony’s Adam Sandler/Judd Apatow comedy You Don’t Mess With The Zohan had a $7.2M weekend and new cume of $84M. HBO Films / New Line / Warner Bros’ Sex And The City hung in for No. 8 with a $6M weekend a new cume of $132M. No. 9 was Marvel/ Paramount’s Iron Man with a $4M weekend a new cume of $304.7M. And Rogue Pictures/Universal’s The Strangers finished No. 10 with a $1.9M weekend and $49.5M new cume.

Get Smart is going to clean The Love Guru’s clock.
No surprise here… I have yet to see it, but I am sure The Guru was a better film when it was made for 4 million and called The Love Guru.
Look at that, the films are so similar I got the titles confused while writing a comment. Wow.
Secretly I hope for Myers to outgross Carell. Why? Coz Myers is a funnier man than Steve, in my books that is.
Get Smart will win the weekend tho’ cause of the familirity of the subject matter and inbuild audiences. I predict a high of 35M B.O this weekend, and Love Guru in the low 20M.
But as you have ‘smartly’ pointed out Nikki, the production cost will tell who is the bigger winner for the final B.O gross of the 2 movies.
Let the game begins
I hope Love Guru flops. Some of the worst commercials I’ve ever seen. I’m surprised that “jackass” was uttered in a lot of them. As well as a line about hookers too.
Horrible just horrible.
Sometimes I really question why I keep an interest in the movie business when more and more of this stuff comes out of the H’wood sausage maker.
We WALKED OUT of Love Guru. I’m bypassing GET SMART. And tomorrow, I’m taking the kids to KIT KITTREDGE.
Nikki – I liked Get Smart. I mean, it wasn’t genius, but it was entertaining. Originally I wanted to see that American Girl movie, but it’s only playing in one theatre and that was sold out. If I can’t get into that with my neices over the weekend, I’ll rent a video and wait until I can!
Read the reviews on the American Girl movie which were pretty great, and Love Guru which pretty much sucked. Figured I couldn’t walk in to the American Girl movie without a kid, so we went to see Love Guru. Walked out after ten minutes. Snuck in to Kit American Girl. The reviewers were right. The little girl kicked Guru’s ass. Mike Myers what happened to you? When did you get desperate?
Get Smart was nearly sold out at Century City around 1pm
Also: Why is no one talking about how much of scene stealer David Koechner is. That fuckin guy got huger laughs than Carell
If target demographic for Love Guru is same as Harold and Kumar(which it surely is), it could have a 10% drop like both the Harold and Kumar movies. The first one opened to 5 million for a 12.5 million weekend
Levon–
Don’t bypass Get Smart. You’re only cheating yourself. It’s funny.
The Incredible Hunk
lol!
Get Smart is a fun and funny movie.
wow im glad the love guru is flopping. that movie stars some of the biggest assholes on this planet… meyers, timberlake and alba.
It’s very strange, this said without any kind of malice, how the career of the talented and inventive Mr Myers seems to totally follow if not mimic the steps of the career of Peter Sellers.
To that point I’m seriously asking myself if, all proportion kept, the Austin Powers movies will not become his equivalent of the Pink Panther series. I would not be surprised if another one began shooting soon.
For Get Smart, well… er, the first trailer I’ve seen was totally matching the spirit of the show. But the last I’ve watched recently seems to insist on the “actioner” aspect. Which is really the last thing I’m expecting of Maxwell Smart.
I thought the “Love Guru” rocked. Granted it’s not for everyone. I think the humor went over most people’s heads. You have to be smart to get the jokes, and let’s face it — most people are dumb as cats.
This will be a cult hit for sure, and HUGE dvd $$$

“The No. 2 movie was holdover The Incredible Hunk self-financed by Marvel and distributed by Universal. It fell a hefty 71% from last Friday’s opening… The Happening from M Night Shyamalan finished down a gargantuan 76%”
TOLDJA!
In the case of “The Incredible Hulk,” the fanboys that push up the first weekend are always MIA afterwards. So much for the improved multiple that Universal was claiming would occur for “The Incredible Hulk.” Smaller opening weekend than “Hulk” and same or greater audience erosion? Time to retire the Hulk movies. I expect that audience loss to improve some and finish in the 65-69% range for the weekend.
In the case of “The Happening,” it’s just a piece of crap. The few Shyamalan fans that remained loyal after “Lady in the Water” got their kick in the teeth with “The Happening” – and deservedly so because they should have cut off Shyamalan after “The Village.”
In the end, both of these movies will have done as expected. That’s unfortunate, because I want as many movies to do well as possible – even the shitty ones – but there should be some better common sense on the front end of these.
I still don’t understand why smart and guru went head to head. I heard paramount wanted to move it but didn’t see another date to open it since they were after young males. I think Guru could have easily opened on July 11th or even up against Hancock — which pretty much has the whole weekend to itself. It just is stupid to go against another comedy.
variety reports from initial reactions of get smart– a lot of them liked it a lot and were surprised how good it was.
So much for the “Word of mouth will push Hulk to $200 million” theory. Hulk is not a good movie, definitely not for non-fans. After Iron Man, you can’t just give people CGI extravaganza, because eventually they all look the same. You need something more, and Hulk doesn’t have it.
Glad that Love Guru bombed. Can’t stand Mike Myers’ “humor”. Never made me smile, let alone laugh.
Dumb down guru – get smart weekend. Battle of the mediocre non-giants. I can’t help but wonder if American Girl had opened wide if that wouldn’t have flattened both boys? Per screen on Kit Kittredge is impressive, no? What exactly is their rlease pattern Nikki? Are they planning to go wide? If so, when? Seems to me based on rotten tomatos they have somethng like 80% positive compared to the TERRIBLE reviews of Guru and mediocre reviews of Get Smart. Does Bob Berney not have enough money to release in more than five theatres? What’s the story?
You have to ” be smart” to get dick jokes and a joke myers ripped off from the rat pack in the fifties? A new definition perhaps.
Wanted to take my kids this morning to Kit Kittredge. Sold out. PRE-SOLD. First two shows. Can’t go tomorrow, so we pre-booked for Wedneseday. I think Danielle is right. Maybe they should have opened wider. By the time they do, I believe the 4th of July, my kids will want to see WallE.

Not surprising to see The Happening with a huge drop-off. Wished it would break the record for the biggest 2nd wknd drop-off, currently the record being held by ‘Undiscovered’ with 86.4% on the 2nd wknd
As for Hulk, well, there goes the trilogy hope
Wow if these numbers hold up it will be a really soft weekend. Looks like every film ‘cept Panda is coming in below targets. For Guru to do this bad with Meyer’s star power is really shocking. Regarding Hulk, looks like it is tracking pretty closely with the First Fantastic Four which pulled in cum $150M. Seems like all comic book films have a steep drop off the second friday from the lack of Thur midnight shows and fanboys inflating the first friday. Rest of the weekend will tell more how it holds up.
