I was surprised to see what the Los Angeles Times‘ Patrick Goldstein said in today’s New York Observer under the headline, “Make Nice, Nikki: L.A. Times Starts Hollywood Blog”:
“When asked what blogs he reads, the first one Mr. Goldstein cited by name was Deadline Hollywood Daily, by Nikki Finke. Ms. Finke’s site has become a go-to destination for Hollywood news and analysis, particularly during last year’s writers’ strike. Surely the L.A.Times wants a piece of her action. ‘I think we’re doing very different things,’ says Mr. Goldstein. ‘We’re not trying to get her traffic. There’s a giant other audience out there that hasn’t been reading her or other blogs that’s still available. I think there’s plenty of room.’ ‘Nikki is one of a kind,” Mr. Goldstein not quite compliments. ‘I think she does a great job. … She’s a very resourceful reporter. You will not get me to say anything bad about her. I have a lot of respect for her.’ “
Readers, I understand if you just threw up in your mouth a little.
Now I feel guilty for dissing Patrick during the writers strike (when he likened Patric Verrone to Yassir Arafat). Here’s what I told the NYO about Goldstein:
“Ms. Finke says that Mr. Goldstein is ‘one of the nicest people I’ve ever met,’ a quality that may not serve him well online. ‘That’s my problem with it: He’s way too nice.’ Ms. Finke wonders if Mr. Goldstein, whose Big Picture column has traditionally run once a week, is up to the task of blogging. ‘You have to work really hard. News come to you at night, in the early mornings, on the weekends. You have to work all the time. I work all the time,’ she says. ‘Many people just don’t want to work that hard.’ ”
Readers, again, I understand if you just threw up in your mouth a little.
I’m told that, despite heavy promotion by the paper and other media, Goldstein’s blog on Monday only received 1,102 page views, placing #35 out of 50 blogs at the LA Times. But I’m rooting for you, Patrick, I really am. (THURSDAY UPDATE: A source close to Goldstein emailed me today, “You cited the numbers for the day before the blog launched. The numbers after we’ve launched, they tell me, have been quite good.”

I would like to get over 1000 pageviews in a single day…
But I’m just small time.
Start a blogroll, that will get things going for him.
MSM just doesn’t get what an anachronism they’ve become.
It’s not the format, it’s the content, i.e. it’s not the blog format that serves Nikki so well, it’s the truth that draws people to DHD.
Duh.
Perhaps you and Goldstein should start faking a blog war, by exchanging witty and snippy bon mots that get all sorts of attention for both your blogs. A sort of Battle of the Blogs.
And don’t just think about it in visit stats, think of the marketing opportunities. Deadline Hollywood VS Big Picture T-shirts, mugs, bobble-heads. This could be bigger than New Coke.
Long time reader. First time poster.
I just had to let you know that after reading the following:
ADVISORY: SAG/AFTRA/AMPTP News
I have a major package all about SAG/AFTRA/AMPTP posting later. It is multi-part and contains a lot of new and urgent reporting, commentary and analysis.

Now over 48 hours ago. And to come back to the site to read the report about yours and Mr. Goldstein’s semi- public non- feud… is a tad bit frustrating. And quite frankly, the article about the gift to UCLA costume dept, etc etc.
You HAVE become the voice of inside Hollywood news. You are valued. And I do check in to get the latest news several times a day. But when you tease a story, and then let it sit for hours or even days… it is crazy making. And, I feel, slightly dishonest. Why else to tease the story, except to get multiple page hits on the website?
You tell us you have urgent news. And then 2 days go by. How urgent is it?
Again, I appreciate the work, and do read your blog. I find you the most honest reporter in Hollywood. Please don’t betray our trust.
All best.
To Brian: VERY good question….Nikki??
Nikki..I did threw up in my mouth a little too many. But making nice is a good thing.
But a word to Mr Goldstein. ‘Mess with the best, you mess with the rest’
I can’t help but wonder why sort of blog Goldstein will come up with and who the audience will be. Part of the problem is the affiliation with the LA Times. I’ve never seen a blog associated with a major newspaper which has been of any assistance.
Blogs are best when the authors have the ability to be frank and off the cuff and have the autonomy to provide their own spin.
Really..the main competition for this blog should be other freelancers…not some blowhard who will ultimately do what his corporate boss says to do.
From Nikki’s post on the 24th:
“There’s a reason I am sitting out these propaganda games underway between AFTRA and SAG — because only the AMPTP wins. What I am doing is putting the final touches on a SAG/AFTRA/AMPTP package of urgent news and information that Hollywood needs to absorb. For those who are impatient for the posts, please understand that they represent a lot of research and analysis and fact-checking. Just know I’m working around-the-clock.”
Give her a chance.
