Chalk up yet another instance of the Los Angeles Times losing its journalistic integrity and credibility.
The latest example comes today when the newspaper changed a Letter To The Editor in order to edit out direct criticism of Calendar staff writer Rachel Abramowitz. Long considered yet another weak link in the LAT‘s already lightweight movie coverage, Abramowitz on June 4th inserted an inappropriately flippant remark about ex-Hollywood P.I. Anthony Pellicano in an article on an unrelated subject. And it pissed off four targets of the now convicted criminal — Anita Busch, Bernie Weinraub, Jude Green and Pamela Miller — and they decided to complain.
The original letter they sent to the newspaper ended with: Yet, Ms. Abramowitz lightly tosses off “Where is Anthony Pellicano when you need him?” Maybe Ms. Abramowitz would change her tune if she was on the receiving end of a late night death threat phone call. By publishing this, the L.A. Times has sent a message to its readers that what Pellicano did was not only okay, but preferable to fighting legally through the court system.
But what the newspaper printed for the finish was: By publishing the line “Where is Anthony Pelicano when you need him?” the L.A. Times has sent a message that what Pellicano did was not only OK but preferable to fighting through the court system.
The point is that the editors could have decided not to run the letter at all. So, tragically, here’s yet another section of the Los Angeles Times that can’t be believed anymore.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Those sorts of shenanigans pretty much defeat the purpose of having a “letters to the editor” section at all.
Nikki, you are just now figuring out the LA times can’t be trusted?
I mean seriously that paper has gone down the drain, with all it’s left wing political crap! I never trusted that news paper for the “truth”
In fact I don’t trust any news organization for the “truth” they only tell one side of the story anyhow.
Nikki- One thing I do say is you always print both sides of the story, even during the WGA strike. You were the only one with full coverage of it. So thanks for posting the truth.
LAT has turned in the PennySaver. Wait the PennySaver has journalistic integrity so the LAT wishes it were the PennySaver.
The LA Times has been useless since Sam Zell took control. The Sunday edition before the Tuesday election had more articles about pet ownership (two) than about the ballot Propositions (none).
Listen to Bill Moyer’s address to the NCMR from a few weeks back. He lays out clearly why the LA Times has stumbled so badly.

“with all it’s left wing political crap!” –TV fan
Left-wing political crap, like firing Robert Scheer and replacing his with Jonah Goldberg? Obviously your TV fandom doesn’t go much beyond the Faux News echo chamber if you think the LA Times has moved to the left.
They don’t refer to the LA Times as a “company” paper for nothing!
Every newspaper runs a disclaimer that letters to the editor can be edited for clarity or brevity. This is not shocking.
So the L.A. Times sucks. Don’t subscribe. You probably don’t.
Oh my God, the Times’ coverage of MOVIES is “lightweight”? Crikey.
If there’s a better one-stop collection of local writers and reporters, point us to it. Or perhaps you should just refrain from kicking a dying industry.
That Abramowitz comment was stupid.
Typical LAT to edit the letter to the editor.
LAT left wing? Ha, ha, funny. More like company town paper, with pablum filling.
Cannot remember last time we read the LAT.
All MSM has become utterly useless and corrupt. Too many hedge funds, too many lawyers.
Jenius – Please, I am talking about the all out attack on the Governor when his “fondling” scandal broke out. Yet, they said nothing about the Mayor of LA cheating on his wife with a bimbo.
For the record I listen to 640 AM KFI for all the truths, at least they give both sides of the story. Jon and Ken rule!
Yes, the LAT’s movie coverage is lightweight and has been long before Zell showed up. The recent unsigned editorials–on AFTRA, the Universal fire, and today’s SAG one–would lead a reader to think that the LAT’s editorial board lives in Duluth.
Moyers can gas on about how Zell destroyed the paper, but it sucked before he got his sticky mitts on it. Shelby Coffey made sure that readers stayed away in droves, and recent management by Tribune and editors who’d rather be elsewhere, have ensured that local coverage is light. Look the Susan Atkins story–over 500 comments on a story so poorly reported that a high school paper would have ashamed to run it.
Enjoy life in your bubble, TVFan. Your thoughts on what is an “objective” news source tells us all we need to know.
The corporatization of once great newspapers is a great tragedy and great blow to democracy. The whole thing is infuriating. Bill Moyers got it 100% right.
For the record TVfan, admitting you listen to those two, has lost you any and all credibility for the rest of your life, that means forever! You are officially brain dead. To say you get truths from them gives me the feeling you have never left your mom’s basement and indeed are really and truly a TVFAN. Both sides of the story…..laughable..
The Times problems are not because of this fake “left wing” foist. There is no left or right to corruption. When you apologize or cover up for all of the powers that be you are corrupt and people stop turning to you for information.
The Times lost its credibility, its readership and will probably close within ten years.
What’s the big deal? They took out a line referring to “death threats” against an editor. I’d take it out too. Abramowitz doesn’t deserve that, it’s in poor taste. Maybe the original writers, who should know a thing or too about editing, should write better so they’re not edited, which btw, isn’t hard to do.
And no, I’m not a “shill” for the LAT.
This criticism comes across as reaching.
There are a lot of reason that the LA Times sucks. This is not one of them. Editing letters to the editor are nearly always done and is usually stated in the letters section.
The LATimes descends further into self-parody every day. The way it abandoned Anita Busch was appalling. Then the Rachel Abramowitz line–dumb and smarmy. THAT’S where a copy editor’s pencil was needed, but instead, in its typically ham-handed way, the Times lets that idiocy slide into print and then eviserates Busch’s calm and reasoned letter of protest. It should be obvious to all that the Times, always a laughingstock, is now exponentially so.
As a TV writer myself, I can’t help but worry about the state of the newspaper industry as a whole. The LA Times isn’t perfect, but isn’t there a larger concern here? I just can’t believe all these snotty posts–there’s something much larger happening around us. Newspapers are dying. If newspapers die, what happens to our society? Nikki, are you really so small-minded that you would zero in on the editing of a letter (a COMMON practice, by the way) and not ever stop to think how sad it is that one of the country’s largest and best papers is being destroyed by corporate greedy jerks?
The Times hung the victims of the Pellicano trial out to dry.
Nikki, Nikki -
Not to worry. What goes around is coming around… with a vengeance. Current financial projections (there are four substantial studies I have seen now) are that the Los Angeles Times will be folding within two-and-a-half years, as the current rate of income (or rather, declining income) continues. Subscription & newsstand sales drop precipitously lower every week, and more advertising is abandoning the paper every month, relentlessly moving to other media.
Whatever magic trick Mr. Zell had promised to pull out of his hat to revive the Times has proven nonexistent. He might as well have bought the Blockbuster Video chain – at least then he wouldn’t be losing as much cash as he will with this massive debacle.
The nice thing to know is that a second rate writer like Rachel Abramowitz will likely have to leave the city to find another job, since there will no longer be any newspapers left in L.A. The competition for any writing job will become ferocious.
Considering her empathy & feelings for others, I think the perfect job for her would be as a clerk in a bank handling foreclosures. Or as a customer help specialist at an insurance company, canceling sick people’s health benefits.
To quote Rachel: “Where is Anthony Pellicano when you need him?”
Patterico has been pwning the Times for years. Welcome to the party.
Moyers wouldn’t be happy unless the Times was somewhere to the left of The Nation. Dood makes Rather look sane.
LA Times is against the 1st Amendment. They should release the video.
The loony, wingnut side of the Chandler family are now happy.
