After years of complaining about partner Rick Nicita, CAA’s original Young Turks have pushed him out of the agency and foisted him onto Morgan Creek where he’ll be co-chairman and chief operating officer. It must have been a desperate situation for the 63-year-old Nicita who, after years of rumors that he’s on the outs, is now willing to work for James Robinson, one of the worst bosses in Hollywood and one of the biggest assholes in the movie biz. (Kudos to LA Times‘ Claudia Eller who got online first with the announcement… without analysis.)
This horrible job culminates Nicita’s 42-year career as an agent for first William Morris and then CAA, where he became a partner in 1995 when Ovitz left to become the short-timer prez of the Walt Disney Co. That’s when the agency was handed over to the so-called Young Turks — Jay Moloney, Richard Lovett, Bryan Lourd, Kevin Huvane, David “Doc” O’Connor — as well as to head of music Tom Ross, head of television Lee Gabler, and veteran agent Nicita. Even though Moloney at one point was touted to take over the agency, he was fired in 1996 because of his hopeless drug habit. Since then, the Young Turks have slowly but surely consolidated their grip on CAA, pushing out first Ross, then Gabler, and now Nicita.
Though considered a diligent agent within the movie biz, I’ve been hearing for years those CAA insider complaints about how “lazy” and “unaggressive” Nicita is, not to mention “overpaid”. (Remember, they’re saying this, not me…) So it was just a matter of time before he exited. Of course, now is an opportune moment for CAA to give the ol’ heavy-ho since Tom Cruise isn’t the star he once was and his United Artists is on the skids (Rick’s wife and Cruise’s longtime producing partner Paula Wagner is CEO there.) Meanwhile, Huvane is fielding what few leading man offers there are for Tom.
Nicita is generally liked within the Industry, so he’ll be a good antidote to Robinson who is loathed. But Nicita should have tried to buy himself more time, because he could have walked into a gig as No. 2 at a major agency (which I know was thinking about hiring him). But then Nicita would have been a competitor, and CAA couldn’t have that — which is why the Young Turks find production jobs for agents they want to jettison. Even Universal, which distributes Morgan Creek’s incredibly lousy product in exchange for a fat fee, are bewildered why Nicita would land at Morgan Creek. “What motivates Robinson these days? I don’t honestly know. It used to be to hobnob with stars…” one exec snarked to me.
Oh, and for the record, I just received this email from a CAA bigwig: “You have no idea how hurtful you are. Rick Nicita is one of the great guys of our business. He is beloved by all of us. He wasn’t pushed out of anything. He is actually excited about his new job. He created it. He’s been very good friends with Jim Robinson for a long time. Because of what you wrote and made up, he will now spend the rest of the year answering stupid questions about whether he was ‘pushed out’ or not….”

NTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM
Date: July 29, 2008
To: Staff
From: Richard Lovett
Re: RICK NICITA
After 28 years with CAA and more than 40 years as a motion picture agent, our great friend and colleague Rick Nicita has decided to leave the agency business to join Morgan Creek Productions, where he will serve as Co-Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, beginning August 15.
Rick has been a tremendous partner, brilliant agent, and gracious mentor to so many of us.
We are grateful for his leadership and for the extraordinary care he has demonstrated for clients and colleagues alike.
Please join Kevin, Rob, Bryan, Steve, Doc and me in wishing Rick the best of everything as he embarks upon this new chapter of his career!
I was Jim’s assistant for the last two years. He is not one of the worse bosses in Hollywood… As far as toughest, he may be up there. But one thing is for sure, we will all be watching the waters of the Creek.
Where will Peter Weller go???
Gosh, Nikki, shouldn’t you be off to the Confessional long about now to atone for the sin of harming yet another poor Hollywood insider? Shame on you.
Or is it congrats for pushing yet another button on the delusional elevator of the self-indulgent and sensitive ego of the Hollywood elite.
You’ve got Jim all wrong. I worked for him for many years, he’s certainly tough, but he puts his own cash on the line with each film he makes, so it’s understandable that he wants the trains to run on time.
Knowing Jim, this is a clear signal that he wants to bring the company back to where it once was. They have cash, they have guaranteed distribution – not many others can say that.
I hope for Jim and Brian and David that this works out and they prosper with this new hire.
As much as I love your column and well researched scoop….I have known and dealt with Rick Nicita over the last 27 years of my career and have found him nothing short of smart, helpful, gracious, and tenacious – all the things you’d want in an agent.
The tone of your letter was pretty damn snarky and unnecessary.
Honestly you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to Jim Robinson. I worked for him for many years and he is fair, tough, hard working and rewards loyalty. Jim is an entrepreneur who has started countless careers both on the creative side and the business side. Jim is well respected and Rick will get a lot of movies made at Morgan Creek.
Being as much an outsider that you can be, I actually wish both Nicita and Robinson luck, and hope they work together well, and maybe soften the rather harsh reputation Robinson has, heard by folks as far out of the loop as I am. Maybe a touch of diplomacy in a town as touchy as Hollywood was just what the doctor ordered.
Hell, I’ll even wish CAA luck, I’m in a giving and giddy mood today. I think it’s heat-stroke.
Anyone who publicly humiliates Lindsay Lohan so she actually bothers to show up to work on time can’t be too bad.
I heard that Robinson is not one of the worst bosses – he just speaks the truth – and of course, no one in Hollywood does well with that. He puts his own coin into his pics, so he can say what he wants. Plus – he publicly berated that skank HO – HAN, and he low life family: the guy gets the two point conversion as far as I am concerned.
Here’s an algebra equation: lagging support + flagging client = heave-ho.
Nikki do you know where the name Young Turks came from? The original Young Turks were the leaders of the Turkish revolution and they organized the genocide against millions of Armenians in 1915 or thereabouts. Before the Nazis mass-murdered the Jews the Turks mass-murdered the Armenians. So it’s a fitting nickname for CAA’s leadership. I doubt they even know what the name really means.
If you measure Robinson’s worth in terms of his stance against Lohan, remember he courted and flattered her shortly thereafter like a sycophant, thus erasing the previous stance.
As i read the comments all I can do is gape in amazement at Morgan Creek’s focus on this article. (though making movies never is a priority over there.)Almost everyone who’s had the displeasure of dealing with James Robinson would label him at best, mildy sadistic; at worst, somewhere just below Satan. I don’t know if Nikki has ever dealth with him first hand, but EVERYTHING she said is dead on. Any comment to the contrary is nothing short of hilarious.
Ok, so Robinson is an asshole, no need to slag Nicita.
Nikki’s right. The simple fact is that if Richard Lovett wants you gone, you are gone. He has no conscience, which makes him the perfect president of that vile place.
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Nikki — you are hurting poor little CAA’s feelings. Just like Lovett and co. to impugn your integrity and then blatantly lie about what happened to Rick. You gotta love it.
This is probably the most vulnerable CAA has been since it’s early days.
They are fast becoming the New York Yankees — bloated, aging, and not exactly earning their exorbitant salaries. They are one big defection — or an Endeavor merger — away from losing their grip.
Bravo Nikki for calling it like it is. I’m sure Jim Robinson is pissed off but hey, he can call Harvey (well they hate each other but hey they can hate you together) and commiserate. I’ve worked with Jim and everything you say about that man is true. Vile, tacky and loathsome are some of the nicer things I can say about him. As for Nicita, I think it was time just to quit and bow out gracefully instead of making shitty pictures that get one or two weeks of release and then straight to video. It couldn’t be about the money.
Any truth to the rumor that Paula Wagner and Tom Cruise are on the outs?
this is fascinating. I mean one of the most respected people in the business being banished it seems. And going into business with someone we’ve never heard a respectful word about. It doesn’t make sense and I can’t wait to read the speculation, the opinions and see the fallout.
Maybe Nicita wasn’t pushed out, and maybe Robinson isn’t the worst boss in Hollywood, I don’t know. But I just had a hearty laugh from looking at Morgan Creek/James Robinson’s output in the last few (15) years:
Sydney White, Georgia Rule, Man of the Year, Two for the Money, Exorcist: The Beginning, Juwanna Mann, American Outlaws, Heist, Angel Eyes, 3000 Miles to Graceland, The Pledge, Get Carter, The Art of War, The In Crowd, Battlefield Earth, Chill Factor, Soldier, Wild America, Bad Moon, Diabolique, Big Bully, Two If By Sea
YIKES. I can’t recall seeing a sorrier slate of films. The only halfway decent film he’s produced in all that time is The Good Shepherd, which still fell short of expectations, especially with all the top talent involved. Morgan Creek’s last big hits were the Ace Ventura movies all those years ago. Good luck to Nicita, it looks like he’s going to need it.
“Because of what you wrote and made up, he will now spend the rest of the year answering stupid questions about whether he was ‘pushed out’ or not….”
You post one blog entry and it’s going to haunt Rick Nicita for the next five months? Congratulations, Nikki, that is power.
Get a life you people! If you know Rick, he is a consumate professional, smart and loyal friend, knows what he wants and will thoughtfully pursue it. If you don’t know Rick, shut up!
@ AC — be sweet to “The Pledge.” It’s an amazing movie in my book, fearlessly directed by Sean Penn, and Nicholson is brilliant in it.
I think Morgan is going to turn around at the Box Office with a global hit in Mystery action suspense and it will turn into a franchise in itself with 3 to follow. It is a company run by and Entrepreneur and bringing over a smart agent to help is a smart thing to do. Most of the Companies are run by Intrapreneurs people who work on someone else’s dime. They might have a a tough go, but Robinson is smart enough to know smart people will bring in smart projects so I don’t count Morgan as being up the Creek, far from it.
Something big is a brewing!
