UPDATE: NBC today announced the stop and start dates for hosting duties on The Tonight Show in 2009: Jay Leno ends May 29th, and Conan O’Brien starts on June 1st. Meanwhile, Jay pulled a Jimmy at the TCA today. Like Kimmel did at ABC’s presentation last week, Leno showed up in costume – bald cap, goatee to hide that big chin, black glasses — and sneaked into the back of the room. (Photo, right, released by NBC.) Then he began asking questions of the NBC bosses like whether Leno would be paid for the whole year even if he’s only working for six months of it.. (The answer was yes.) The TCA press at first didn’t recognize him, then laughed and applauded. (They must be easily amused.) Transcript for Leno’s exchange.
An NBC source told me that the bit was Leno’s idea because Jay ”felt bad” about making that announcement he was “done” with NBC and claims he was “misunderstood”. It was a weird venue for Jay Leno to make that announcement: in an unreadable USA Today article about his massive car collection. Needless to say, the paper didn’t even know it had a scoop and buried the news in the middle of its story. Here’s what Leno stated: ” ‘I am definitely done next year — with NBC,’ he says, sitting in a huge recliner in his poster-strewn shop office. Would he go to another network? Leno just smiles. ‘I’m not a beach guy, and the last time I was in my pool was to fix a light. Don’t worry, I’ll find a job somewhere.’ ”
I’ve been saying for some time that, judging from Leno’s animus towards Jeff Zucker who brutally threw him under a bus for Conan O’Brien in 2009 even though Jay is still No. 1 in late night, there was no way Leno would stick with NBC. So, I say it’s clear that Jay is ABC-bound and on the air there in 2010. I also hear from sources that Kimmel is “OK” with having his time slot moved.
Meanwhile, ABC just extended its option with current late night host Jimmy Kimmel to keep him at the network through at least 2010. At the Television Critics Association briefing last Wednesday, ABC Entertainment topper Steve McPherson stated “there’s absolutely room for both” Kimmel and Leno, and pledged that Jimmy would be fully consulted every step of the Jay negotiation — something Zucker failed to do with Leno. ”I can’t believe they’re going to let this guy go at the top of his game,” McPherson said. “If that happens, I guess we’ll look at it at the time, and Jimmy will be involved in those discussions, and that will be that.”
Meanwhile, Kimmel livened up McPherson’s TCA session during which Jimmy played reporter asking the bigwig from the audience, “There are rumors that ABC is actively courting Jay Leno for 11:30. Is there any truth to the rumors? If you were even to talk to Jay Leno, wouldn’t that be like contract tampering? Wouldn’t that be illegal? Couldn’t you go to jail for that? Are you at all afraid that if you do replace Jimmy Kimmel, he might do something crazy to you or your car?” I understand this punking was McPherson’s idea. But I still think McPherson’s 2007 bit of TCA schtick tearing NBC’s Ben Silverman a new asshole was way more entertaining…
So much for the behind-the-scenes late night drama everyone expected. There won’t be a need for a Late Shift sequel. (Sorry, Bill Carter…) Meanwhile, producer Lorne Michael told the TCA he’ll have Jimmy Fallon do a 5- or 10-minute Web show starting in the fall at 12:30 AM to work
out the kinks because Conan was so hopeless when started hosting. Probably in the spring, Fallon will get TV time on the air following Leno as O’Brien takes a breather, then prepares to take over The Tonight Show. Meanwhile, how alarming for NBC that Late Late Show‘s Craig Ferguson has caught up with Conan ratings-wise.
And let’s not forget that The Late Show with David Letterman is still the king of quality. The show picked up 5 Emmy nominations this time around, while The Tonight Show was blanked. Oh, but Leno himself received an accolade — a “Special Class Program – Short-Format Nonfiction Programs” Emmy nod for Jay Leno’s Garage at Jaylenosgarage.com. How embarrassing.

Want drama?
Start the countdown clock on Mr. Zucker for causing this shit storm in the first place by handling these guys like he was Michael Scott in THE OFFICE.
Jay will go out swinging and start his new show swinging.
He’s been bottling his feelings about NBC up for a while and I think this is just the beginning of the real fun.
This is going to be good.
BTW the idea of launching Jimmy Fallon in webisodes is so fucking funny I’m speechless.
My favorite part of that is Lorne Michaels saying he’ll release them at 12:30am like the real show.
Lorne is trying to do “TV on the internet” and that’s so 1999.
Lorne, babe, the internet makes time slots irrelevant but release the Fallon shows and discover fast that no one likes or cares about your new late night host.
Never understood why Leno is #1. His joke delivery (well, the jokes entirely) is just awful. I love Conan, but he’s on just too late. The change is for the better. Until then, everyone please switch to Letterman, quality wins every time!!!!
The Leno/Kimmel late night package is going to eat NBC alive. The bean counters at NBC are not going to be happy with the “share” their advertising will sell for. And then… there are the stockholders. Not a good time to go camping with them.
Letterman is just a crotchety old man now.
I thought he was hilarious when I was 13. Now he just seems like a jerk.
Being playfully sarcastic is fun. Being mean and sarcastic … not so much. Letterman seems like he genuinely doesn’t like humanity. He lost that playful glint in his eye a long time ago. Now he’s just depressing.
could this end up hurting CBS more than anyone else? Conan on nbc and then Kimmel on after on abc, could kill what little the letterman/ferguson duo has left in terms of viewers.
Check the ratings. How do you figure Conan will beat Letterman at 11:30 when he can’t beat Ferguson with the Leno lead-in two nights a week?
Do you really think there are people just waiting for Conan to come to 11:30? Do you really think there are people who want to watch Kimmel, but he’s on a half-hour too early for them?
When there is a change in scheduling at the networks, it is the network that changes the least that benefits.
I was a big letterman for over 20 years until this year. The quality of his monologue can’t get me through to the interviews. Jokes about Hillary’s pantsuit and McCains age are tiring night after night. The punchline is always the same. What is going to happen if Obama becomes president , will he still be telling Bill Clinton and McCain jokes.
I miss the letterman who thumbed his nose at General Electric. What we have now is the comedian trying to find the easy joke. What happened to his ironic , sarcastic wit. I can’t believe I am criticizing the man who got me through college.
The Late Show is not the king of quality at all. Sure, Dave was admirable during the strike, but his show is so damaged and dated. He just posted his worst ratings in history, so even his audience is noticing how bad his show has become.
It’s not just Zucker on the hotseat at GE!
Jeff Immelt will also go down the shithole with him if Leno goes to ABC.
Immelt is already under fire for the loss of value at GE, this will be the end of him & probably cause the sale or spinoff of the network.
yet another in a long line of “genius” Zucker moves.
I totally agree with “jim”.
I rarely watch Letterman, unless he’s having on an interesting guest, and often, not even then, or I’ll DVR the show for later and skim past the stuff I don’t want to watch, which is most of the show. I’m tired of his fawning over pretty actresses and being snarky and dismissive with too many guests.
Sure, Jay can be corny, but he’s not an unpleasant jerk like Dave.
As for this comment, “I can’t believe I am criticizing the man who got me through college.” Uh, that’s just it. He’s never matured. You did.
letterman has been fucking great this year. leno is death. fallon horrible. craig ferguson suprisingly good! conan is cool too…but nbc seems to be floundering…maybe they can hire more lame execs to run the place!
How in the world does Zucker rationalize his job performance? I mean, is he that delusional? He HAS to have pictures of people in compromising positions with small, furry farm animals. It’s the only explanation.
Everyone I know cannot watch letterman anymore. As Sam Goldwyn once said “they’re staying away in droves”. His ratings now prove it.
As for leno, if he goes to ABC his ratings will stay the same as they are at NBC and conan will suffer for it.
Hate on Jay all you want, he’ll still kill Letterman AND Conan when he moves. Letterman sucks worse than ever. Moving Conan to 11:30pm with watered down routines (he will be forced to) will go down as one of the worst mistakes in late night history.
Hey, Letterman is classic. Always has been, always will.
To say David Letterman is the king of quality just because he received some EMMY noms is like saying I am quality and deserve the nobel prize. Sometimes same idealogy performer get the best of each other or should I say like to stroke each other.
I just figured out today why Jeff hired Ben Silverman.
So there would be someone to fire…
It’s true that Jeff just gives people enough rope to hang themselves, but don’t forget it’s always Jeff holding the rope.
I just can’t believe GE is still going to let this happen when any random person on the street could tell you it’s going to be a historically remembered mistake in network television history. Unbelievable. What are they thinking?
And Jimmy Fallon? I guess Jeff just figured he’s fucked anyway?
I don’t care who gets the Emmy. David Letterman hasn’t been funny in years and Paul Shaffer is simply annoying.
Letterman is awful…how in the world is that show nominated for Emmys??? His jokes are predictable and very, very lame. It’s like laughing at your senile old grandpa’s jokes just to make him feel better. I prefer Leno…much less predictable…Letterman just mails it in these days….wait, wait…yep, from the home office in…yeah, who cares anymore Dave.
I also like Conan…though I won’t miss some of his more juvenile and stupid bits. I hope Leno pops up on another network.
i think Fallon is going to surprise some people. i know A LOT of people who are big fans [18-24 demo] who are stoked to see him get Conan’s show.
Leno stealing someone else’s schtick…how ‘unexpected’ (he’s such a hack)
Letterman hasn’t been funny and/or relevant for over 15 years.
Conan is the man and they should just toss Leno out NOW and let the reign of Conan begin.
@Sunny
I don’t think I have matured at all. The three stooges still makes me laugh and so does Letterman at times. His monologue is what bores me. Dave should realize he isn’t a joke machine like Leno and skip the monologue. That isn’t what made him funny.
CBS retire Dave and move Ferguson into the 11:35pm time slot and then march on to a total late night victory with Joel McHale (The Soup) in the 12:35pm slot who will certainly trump Fallon on NBC.
