UPDATE: News reports say today’s 10 AM Los Angeles City Hall meeting about proposed new restrictions on paparazzi included reps from West Hollywood, Malibu, the Screen Actors Guild, and LA County Sheriff Lee Baca. But no members of the LAPD were present at the hearing. That’s because Chief William Bratton has consistently opposed new legislation that would further restrict and penalize overly aggressive photographers. He called today’s confab a “total waste of time”, “grandstanding foolishness”, and a “farce”.
But look at what this tool arrogantly told KNBC this AM about the paparazzi problem (after the confab was prompted by the LAPD’s decision to spend $25K to transport Britney Spears from her home to the hospital because of all the photog chaos):
“If you notice, since Britney started wearing clothes and behaving; Paris is out of town not bothering anybody, thank god; and, evidently, Lindsay Lohan has gone gay, we don’t seem to have much of an issue. If the ones that attract the paparazzi behave in the first place, like we expect of anybody, that solves about 90% percent of the problem. The rest of it we can deal with.”
Sheriff Baca, by contrast, told reporters, “I’m here to try and find a balanced answer. There’s no question that the industry of public information is an important one to protect and I think that there’s responsibility on the side of entertainers as there is responsibly on the side of those seeking to take photographs.”
Meanwhile, the city of Malibu has turned to Ken Starr, the former independent counsel who investigated the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal and now dean of the Pepperdine law school, to bring together experts in the media and legal community about the problem.

“oh bratton it’s nice to know you saying offensive things isn’t limited to the east coast.
i can’t wait until you lose yr job.”
The only thing he has done is make the city safer while trying to do it with limited resources.
As a casual watcher of some of the Entertainment shows mentioned as a cause for the Paps bad behavior I want to know what is so interesting about Lindsay or whoever’s shopping trip. I might want to know about what projects they are working on or finished with. Maybe an interview about a film or TV show they are doing but not how much they spend on shoes (Although it is a ridiculous amount) which has no bearing on their acting. I must admit to some interest in nice bikini shots of various actresses but not to the point of having guys climbing trees or renting hot air balloons to spy into their backyards. The beach is acceptable and any other public resort or area but private homes should be safe.
Perhaps the only way to discourage the stalkarazzi’s is to have give the bodyguards citizen arrest privilages or deputize them to protect their clients. Mace a few of the Paps and I’m sure they will stay away once blinded for a few days.
RIGHTTHEFUCKON Chief Bratton! Seems like the Chief’s extremely simple answer to the problem is too simple for some people to handle.
What guy wouldn’t cross the street top see a girl naked?
What photographer wouldn’t take a picture that he can sell for $60k (more than WGA minimum for an hour TV script)?
If Britney would just keep her panties on, the whole situation wouldn’t exist.
MalibuSurfer: Even if you did stop the Photographers, how are you planning to prevent TMZ, and the National Enquirer, from planting Spycams, and Webcams, on every single street corner, on every single block ???
They’ve already got the technology to zoom-in, and scan through your clothes, and Google Earth can scan through rooflines.
Keep in mind, Google says ‘privacy’ is an idea that never existed in the first place.
I find it interesting that Chief William Bratton had to “interrupt his workout” to go downtown and talk to a reporter about the meeting. I wonder what else he had to interrupt. An appointment with his manicurist? Meeting with his publicist? Lunch at the Ivy? Wow, he sounds like someone that works in Hollywood if you ask me.
I think BHLifer needs to get out more. I’ve lived in LA for 8 months and I’ve already seen the paps in action more than one time. My first weekend here I happened upon them storming Lindsay Lohan as she walked out of a store on Rodeo Dr. I’ve also witnessed pap stupidity in Malibu, where their targets were trying to do something as simple as buy groceries or get a meal with their kids. I have relatively little sympathy for the celebs, they can afford protection. My concern 100% lies with the innocent bystander who is someday going to be killed by one of these fast moving circuses.
Excellent site!!!love the layout aswell
