I know from experience how difficult it is to tell the truth about Big Media. But News Corp moguls need to answer for Fox News Channel airing doctored photos of two New York Times television beat staffers to make them look like trolls – all because the duo dared to report the news.
Of course, News Corp squeals like a stuck pig whenever anyone criticizes their people. And Peter Chernin and Rupert Murdoch themselves are thin-skinned. (Again, I know this from experience…) But NYT reporter Jacques Steinberg and TV editor Steve Reddicliffe were just doing their job. And News Corp has plenty of opportunities to take on that reporting in the proper forums. What I don’t understand is the corporate culture at News Corp where the response is always to attack, attack, attack its critics in as underhanded a way as possible. (Again, I know this from experience…) It’s said that the fish stinks from the head. Murdoch may be unredeemable. But Chernin likes to think of himself as a good guy…

Atta girl!
Go get ‘em, Nikki!
This is what you do best…
The NYT left wing smear machine machine getting what they deserve? Nikki, you need to get a clue.
HuffPo has a pic today that makes McCain’s head look really big. Upset about that?
Fox News needs to be burned to the fucking ground.
So what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander eh. So what if they made them look like trolls. Most of the NYT writers, editors, and editorial persons are either communists or traitors anyway. So I could care less if Fox made them out to look bad. On this blog you guys desparage any of the corporate guys as either boobs or morons but can’t take a little photo making you out to be a troll.
Nikki, you have just won the Best Person in the World Award for tonight’s or next Monday’s Countdown.
While FOX was crowing about its ratings success, none of the networks attacked it unless you were on a news media analysis show such as FOX News Watch or Reliable Sources. Now you have the biggest news network falling on hard times because the others made some changes, and that network, which could be covering Third Parties for President in order to distance itself from the others, instead attack the others ratings increases. No wonder why their ratings are doing great.
Are we gonna get this same kind of outrage when MSNBC does the same sort of thing? I hope so. This has nothing to do with Hollywood, Nikki.
Nikki — Where were the positive articles in the Times when Fox News had atmospheric ratings (by cable news standards)? Let’s face it: The Times loves to pick on Fox as much as Fox loves to pick on the Times. That being said, the doctored photos are asinine.
I must admit that it was a pretty stupid move on the part of Fox News, and whoever did, or ordered, the doctoring should be fired. Not just for the bad taste of doing it, but for making their own network look foolish and childish too, and making the photos more important than the story they were discussing.
If you’re disgusted by Fox & Friends airing this slam as a real news story, then complain. I did. Here’s the e-mail: Comments@foxnews.com.
Thanks Nikki for highlighting this. I’m so tired of media (broadcast, internet, or print) of manipulating facts or materials, especially when it’s corporate spin. I’ve made a complaint to the FCC http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm. Maybe if enough people complain, there will finally be some action taken.
my God, nikki, that list could be a mile long. sometimes I watch a few of the shows on fox just for fun but get a really sinking feeling in my stomach very quickly when the bile just keeps pouring out. it’s such a mean spirited group of pundits, really warped for the most part.
I’d suggest doctoring that photo of Chernin and Murdock, but they couldn’t look much worse.
They actually yellowed their teeth!
Fox is using a combination of the Ad Hominem and appeal to authority fallacies of logic. Unfortunately, these appeal to their core audience of folks who blindly accept their version as gospel.
Thank you for your precision and incisiveness. A friend turned me on to your site for information about the S.A.G negotiations and I read you every day now.
Brava diva!
Le Grande Fromage
We’re no longer Times fans, nor are we Fox fans.
There are some really incoherent babbling loons commenting here
What does it mean: “Nikki, get a clue” Get a clue about what?
Also, the Times not printing articles about Fox’s ratings is not the same as a major news network doctoring photos and ridiculing reporters, whatever you might think of their reporting.
And, the guy who called all Times staff Communists and traitors: is this the 1950s with such cartoonish ignorant thinking? It’s the journalists who were made to look like trolls, not the people on this site. Also, it’s “disparage” and “could not care less.” Learn how to spell.
Yikes.
Rock on, Nikki. You are right on about thin skinned Chernin/Murdoch.
Is Fox News allowed to use the name “News” when they broadcast tripe like this? We have unraveled. It is too late for us as a nation. Thank you Peter Chernin.
Fox News is do as we say, not as we do.
It is to question others, but not question themselves.
It is claiming moral superiority, but using moral equivocation.
Just look at the comments above defending Fox. They are ALL “two wrongs make a right.” They are all moral equivocation.
Fox defenders, you make your own choices in life. You don’t let your decisions be informed by other’s mistakes or errors. You do the right thing. Or the wrong thing.
That’s it.
As the guy who called them communists and traitors I stand by my statement. Paul Krugman is a communist just read his columns. As for traitors Maureen Dowd is one of them along with Krugman and most of the staff as shown by their constant writings in favor of Al Aquada terrorists, Palestinian terrorists, Cloumbian terrorists etc. Sorry my spell check didn’t work. As for it being 1950 well no its 2008 and the communists lost except for at the NYT where it is still the domestic enemy of the United States as evidenced by their editorials and choices of what news to print.
That entire corporate culture from Murdoch on down is run like a political campaign, and we’re all well aware of the conservative strategy for winning: smears.
It’s actually really embarrassing to write about and enjoy some of the great programming on the Fox network knowing what’s lurking in the basement just out of view..
Hmm…so Paul, when the “traiterous” NY Times is carrying your party’s water for the pre-invasion Iraqi disinformation campaign, they’re okay, but now not so much? These “water” terrorists you mentioned, they sound interesting, I wonder if they were one of the groups that Hans Gruber mentioned in Die Hard?
Keep fighting the good fight Nikki.
God, spare me all of this liberal/conservative sparring with the diatribes and advocacy! It’s so freaking boring and, frankly, is not news!!!
Anyone catch the fox news broadcast in november last year which headlined, “if the democrats take back house, then bin laden has won”. Yay for objectivity
Nikki Finke is at it again. Crying the blues and nothing more than a talking point for left wing issues. Has being for years. So what else is new on this site.
You all actually believe what you see on TV or read in the newspaper? Most of it is 90% bull crap, no one ever tells the truth and when they do call people out, they get slammed for it.
FOX News is an okay news channel, I do like Bill o’Reilly from time to time. Hannity and Combs are okay, but I think Combes is a raving psycho lunatic. He never listens to any one that doesn’t share his point of view.
The news media thinks Obama is “God” and I am sick to death of his coverage. Why people buy into his crap is beyond me. I don’t like McCain either, but he is the lesser of the two evils.
So tell me who reports the truth? The New York Times, The LA Times, CNN.. (no they all report half truths)I don’t watch the news channels for the truth.
You want the truth you listen to 640am KFI in California. They report the truth and both sides of the stories in almost everything they cover.
For the record I am an Independent…
