The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual “Leadership” issue features Ron Meyer tomorrow — and the usual sycophantic gushing about his 13 years as prez/COO of Universal Studios all the while
equating the release of Bruce Almighty with curing cancer. Geez, I always thought the 63-year-old former marine was one of those rare moguls who didn’t need his ego fed like the rest of the Big Media weenies. But how pathetic to see that he, too, succumbed to such a nauseating suck-up. I hear Meyer initially turned down the issue only to reconsider when he was told THR would work its way down the list of other moguls with a still healthy advertising budget. Meanwhile, I’m told Meyer’s issue sold more ads than past honorees like Rupert Murdoch, Bob Iger and Jerry Bruckheimer. Shame on Meyer for subjecting all his friends (and enemies) to be held up for ransom by THR‘s rapacious ad salesmen. If only all the studio bosses stopped congratulating each other long enough to personally step in and solve the AMPTP-SAG stalemate and put this town back to work. In my estimation, Ron just lost his street cred. I hope he enjoys the tiara and sash and the traditional stroll through The Grill clutching a bouquet of long-stemmed roses.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

You are hilarious, Nikki!
Keep on …
Nikkl, You’re in Hollywood. This has been going on for decades. Does that mean that all those that have received these “kudo’s for ads” are Weenie’s.
I haven’t seen you complain about others. And I’m certain you’ll never accept this kind of honor. Right?
Are you kidding Nikki? First of all, I understand you have a disdain for all moguls. They can never do right in your mind. But to say that Ron Meyer, after 13 years of successfully running Universal, has lost all his “Hollywood street cred” (you actually wrote “streed” cred but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt) because THR is featuring him in tomorrow’s Leadership issue is absolutely appalling. If anyone should lose their “street cred” it’s you, as whenever you receive some kind of honor, you post it for all to read. Have you already forgotten that you wrote an article thanking Vanity Fair for choosing your website to be put amongst their “Blogopticon” whatever that is. You even wrote “I am very proud to say that VF included my Deadline Hollywood Daily and gave it high marks indeed: at the very top of ‘news’ and in the ‘earnest’ category.” Oh please, and you’re calling HIM pathetic and in need of getting his “ego fed”?? I’m just saying, you might want to look in the mirror before making such statements about other people…
Getting the old ego stroked in Hollywood can be more addictive than cocaine, heroin, meth, and Jolly Ranchers combined.
That’s why I’m going to start a rehab clinic for the ego-addicted. Basically I get rich people to pay me to humiliate them until they’re humble. It’ll be the Hollywood mental health craze of the future.
If Ron Meyer lost his street cred with you, he must be doing something right.
just hilarious!
FuriousD,
I think your idea has already been done. It sounds like that clinic set up by Gerald Levin and Lori Perlman to service those people for $25,000 a week or something like that. Meditation, etc……whatever.
Wow the ONE time I disagree with you. Nikki, publicity is publicity. It’s a business, what’s the harm with a puff piece on Meyer? Besides, all of the congloms have $$ for those type of ads set aside anyway. I doubt it broke anyone.
Hey, Annoyed
The difference is when “moguls” get stroked, it’s all engineered by big biz for big biz.
Nikki’s awards are not “puff” pieces, and have no agenda, and honor the search for truth – which you all appreciate or you wouldn’t keep coming back.
“Nikki’s awards are not “puff” pieces, and have no agenda, and honor the search for truth – which you all appreciate or you wouldn’t kee.p coming back.
Comment by Irritated”
Geez irritated – you sou and nd like a ditto head defending and worshiping Rush. Maybe some Gold Bond in the green bottle will sooth the irritaion. Nikki has just as big an ego as the rest of he H’Wood “journalists” and Moguls and is just as jealous as they are when someone else has the sroke.
More distraction from why most of us come here and to Variety and Hollywood reporter – to see if we will have work this Fall and Winter or if the weenies at SAG and AMPTP will fuck us over again like last Christmas.
Now will Nikki post or censor this?
i agree with most of the above comments. nikki is way off base of this one. and it does sound like a bit of sour grapes in her piece.
Did Mr. Meyer forgot to give Ms Finke an EXCLUSIVE scoop on his “honor?”
When he wins an award from the Association of Alternative News-weeklies, then he will have his cred back, big time.
Which former source of Nikki’s will she turn on next? Stay tuned!
Did Ron ask you to write this? (You ain’t foolin’ anyone, Nikki…)
My service doesn’t involved meditation, it’s a program combining deep aversion therapy and ridicule to break the client’s spirit and teach them that it’s not supposed to be about ego, it’s supposed to be about greed.
And I’m going to charge $50,000 a week!
You see, the more expensive you make something in Hollywood, the more they want it. That’s one of the bad habits Furious D’s Ultimate Program or F’D UP, will cure.
Because when they walk out of my clinic and think: “I paid $50,000 for that crap?” I know I’ve restored the precious gift of critical thinking that’s too often destroyed by too much ego stroking. :p
“THR: We have seen a lot of labor unrest in Hollywood, a writers strike and a
battle between SAG and AFTRA. Why, after years of labor peace, has this been the year from hell for labor?
Meyer: I wish I could give you an answer. I’m sure that the Internet has made a big difference: It has talent believing the streets are paved with gold, when in fact we haven’t made any money from that area yet — not to say that we won’t one day, but so far we haven’t. That’s the only thing I can think of, because otherwise these strikes are debilitating, and they’re unfortunate, and the people who suffer the most are the people that can afford it the least. And it’s tragic, because there’s always a proper deal to be made. ”
If there’s a deal to be made to end the labor siege in the entertainment business then guys like Ron Meyer need to stop hiding behind guys like Nick Counter and get in the negotiating rooms with the labor unions and make the deal already. These execs need to realize that even the general public understand that they’re hardly blame-free in these situations or powerless to prevent them in the first place.
what the hell has Ron Meyer done in the last 13 years but pick up a paycheck?
I religiously read your site, but I think this post is unfair to Ron Meyer. I worked for the corporate side of Universal a number of years ago, and in all my dealings with Meyer and his office, I want to underscore they are the most cordial, professional and polite in the business. (The difference between Meyer and Weinstein, for example, is the difference between night and day.) Meyer himself is a gentleman, and he’s had more than his fair share of corporate bosses to please. Thus, in this case I find you went a bit far in your reaction.
Geez … it was either this, or an ‘Anthony Pellicano’ trubute …. plus, the chance to see more pics of Kelly can’t be a bad thing, can it?
We LOVE Ron!
>>>If only all the studio bosses stopped congratulating each other long enough to personally step in and solve the AMPTP-SAG stalemate and put this town back to work.
People seem to have missed the point. There it is.
I’m available for reading comprehension consulting. I take PayPal too.
Nikki, everyone likes a little professional validation sometimes — even you. I love ya, but Annoyed has a point about the Vanity Fair Blog thing and if anyone clicks the “Magazines” sidebar of this site they’ll see how you begged us (twice) to vote for you in “The Time 100.” I’m just sayin’…
Although I kind of agree with the comment about Nikki coming down on Meyer, when she is so quick to post her awards and sometimes fawn over those awarding them – But, I’m also impressed that she posts the comments that call her out on it.
I guess that makes it a draw.
I hate those issues, and they can be embarrassing whether you’re the center of one, or the one passive-aggressively coerced into buying an ad. But since they’ve found their way into the studio publicity machine, they’re hard to escape. Ron Meyer didn’t need or want his ego fed. Universal didn’t want to get skipped over when all the other studios are going to be hailing their chiefs.
WOW…He’s 63… he’s still a FINE looking man.
He’s an ex-marine! I didn’t know much about him, but I like the fact he had a life before Hollywood.
Thanks Nikki, in the twisted way of Hollywood you have made me like this guy.
I was at an exec lunch and learn session for interns on Monday and Ron came and spoke with us. He was extremely insightful and blunt in a lot of the answers to questions we asked about. He stayed longer than he was planned to in order to answer everyone’s question.
And he never brought up the THR “Leadership” issue.
I think he’s a good guy and deserves the self-congratulations.
Why wait ’til we’re dead?
I’m just upset by the amount of used and wasted paper – couldn’t they have phoned him and told him what they thought??!
