EXCLUSIVE: Sources tell me that Barry Jossen, EVP of physical production at ABC Studios, is replacing Julia Franz as ABC Studios EVP of development. Franz is stepping down voluntarily after recently having a baby. Jossen has been overseeing production for the studio’s slate of network primetime programs, including pilots, series, original movies and miniseries. In addition he supervises the production of original specials for the ABC network and the network’s late night talk/variety show, Jimmy Kimmel Live. I hear Jossen and ABC just closed his deal. This was a hot job that a lot of folks wanted. As I wrote in my previous, What's Really Going On At ABC Studios, Morgan Wandell, the SVP of drama development at ABC Studios, really wanted it but ABC Entertainment topper Steve Mcpherson nixed it. Wandell went to work with Greg Berlanti...

Carl Icahn Now Wants ALL Of Lionsgate
Barry Jossen is the amongst the smartest, most-well-liked, and well-informed executives working in town today. He harkens back to another time when executives took responsibility for their part in the film-making process. No one works harder or is more honest. The community will love and applaud this choice. Bravo Mark Pedowitz and Touchstone!!!
I’m not so sure. Barry Jossen is a non-creative business guy. Mark Pedowitz is a good person but is also a non-creative business type (he’ll be the first to tell you this). Pedowitz needs a creative type with a passion for the craft as his wingman (or wingwoman). With this hire there will be no Yin to his Yang.
I disagree with Hmm. I’ve worked with Barry Jossen and found him to be extremely creative and knowledgeable. He is very smart and dedicated and will fight for the artist. Where most executives in his position are quick to tell you what you can’t do, Barry will say “Tell me what you need and let me figure out how to do it.” He’s an excellent choice.
agree with LD. barry has worked on the production side–and really knows his sh*t there–but he’s also creative, has excellent taste and comes armed with real breadth and depth to his knowledge–things many execs sadly lack. plus he’s a mensch. and there REALLY aren’t enough of those…
lets not forget he has an oscar which is more than most everyone else has.
Congratulations to Barry, he has come a long way and had done well. The comment that he is not a creative guy is just BS. Barry is the perfect combo of a creative business guy. His production background as Junior mentioned is such that he is miles ahead in the creative process, he knows what can b done and how to make it happen for the good of the project. Most at his level somehow skipped working in the trenches, Barry enjoyed all of it.
Many congrats to Barry. This is wonderful news. I must agree with LD. He’s very good at finding a way to make things happen.
Barry is wonderful. Creative, smart and classy. ABC Studios is so lucky to have him.
I fear that Jossen’s departure may finally spell doom for Jimmy Kimmel Live. And maybe it’s time. No offense to the ABC brass, but that crazy and exciting ‘Jimmy’ experiment has staled and failed.
