UPDATE: Universal late today moved the Paul Rudd-Seam William Scott comedy Role Models from November 14th to November 7th because Bond moved from November 7th to November 14.
I usually leave announcements of movies changing dates to the trades. But it’s interesting how the pushback of Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince to 2009 has had such a ping-pong effect on this coming holiday’s North American release schedule. Not only did Summit Entertainment’s Twilight move up into Harry‘s vacated slot of November 21st, but now Sony/MGM’s James Bond No. 22, Quantum Of Solace, has moved back a week. Sony said today: ”We believe November 14th is a great date that allows us to play straight through Thanksgiving and right into Christmas. The Bond films have a long history of entertaining audiences in this holiday corridor going back to Goldeneye in 1995. The studio enjoyed tremendous success opening Casino Royale in North America on November 17, 2006.” Quantum of Solace begins its worldwide roll out on October 31st. Unrelated to Harry, UA’s Valkyrie has moved up from Presidents Weekend 2009 to December 26th (because, when moviegoers think Christmas, they think Nazis…). And Sony moved Will Smith’s Seven Pounds back a week to December 19th, prompting Paramount to slide The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button to Christmas.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Schindler’s List came out in December too. (Not that I’m implying Valkyrie will be on the same level as Schindler’s List.)
What’s a better association to nazis:
Valentine’s Day or Christmas?
Really much to do about nothing! Im curious to see how this film performs now that the movie going public has experienced Daniel Craig as 007, the most Brooding Bond ever!
what will happen to “DEFIANCE” with Daniel Craig on 12/7 or 12/14? Bond killing Nazis in the woods too close to Bond killing whomever he’s killing in Quantum of Solace?
MGM/Broccoli’s versus Paramount/Vantage/Zwick?
C’mon Nikki. Despite your snarky tone, when moviegoers think Christmas, clearly they do in fact think Nazis. Look at the release dates for the following movies that went on to do quite nicely during awards season:
SOPHIE’S CHOICE 12/8/82
SCHINDLER’S LIST 12/15/93
THE PIANIST 12/27/02
Defiance 12/18/08
And also, Ed Zwicks DEFIANCE is set for release on 12/18.
Daniel Craig is EPIC in Casino, and Solace will be huge
Hmm. This is very bad news for Fox’s AUSTRALIA.
“Quantum Of Solace” … makes me laugh when I hear that title. Are they aiming for laughs this time ’round?
Seriously, has someone ever thought of moving Xmas Day from December the 25th to January the 1st for a better B.O. impact?
To Mr Dobrofsky: In France, QUANTUM OF SOLACE is… QUANTUM OF SOLACE. For the first time in the franchise History (except for names like GOLDFINGER or GOLDENEYE) the title is not translated. And most of moviegoers I’ve talked with are unable to remember it.
QUANTUM OF SOLACE is the name of the last unadapted Ian Fleming story, and the producers have chosen to use it to cover their bases. It may be awkward- but everyone refers to it as “the new Bond film”, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
Well, for years there’s been horror movies released on Christmas that apparently appeal to teenage boys who got lumps of coal in their stockings. I’m sure this is one of the reasons why Nazis are also popular for Christmas, that and apparently orthodox Jews are a big Christmas audience.
Kind of reminds me of how “La Guerre des Etoiles” became STAR WARS for the prequels. Because, you know, the French don’t care about their childhood memories.
“Because, you know, the French don’t care about their childhood memories.”
The French don’t care about so many things, you know. That’s why the country is in the state it is.
But I suspect this habit to keep the original title (since the eighties) is due to some obscur marketing motives and to “brand” policy, too complex for my humble abilities of comprehension.
