What a shocker. People who worked with this incredibly talented TV and film crossover comedian are reeling after he died in a Chicago hospital early today from complications due to pneumonia. Said Oceans Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen co-star George Clooney through a publicist: "The world just got a little less funny. He will be dearly missed." Bernie Mac was only 50 years old. A publicist says the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor suffered from the inflammatory lung disease sarcoidosis but it had gone into remission in 2005. Mac also had memorable co-starring roles in Bad Santa, Guess Who, Mr. 3000, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and Transformers. But he was best known for starring in and producing his Fox television series The Bernie Mac Show which aired from 2001 to 2006. This past truncated pilot season due to the Hollywood writers strike, he was starring in/producing another TV offering to Fox, Starting Under, from Bruce Helford and Warner Bros. What a sad day to lose this comedy original.

What a horrible year where we lose the absolute best the world had to offer: George Carlin, Tim Russert, Heath Ledger and now Bernie Mac.
Bernie was one of the best comedy figures of the last 20 years. This just too sad of a loss. At just 50 years old, he probably still had his best work to offer in the future. My heart goes out to his family.

We were hooked from our first glimpse of this amazing man performing. In the first year of his series he and the rest of the cast did a presentation at the DGA we attended, and it was obvious he was every bit the warm, loving, generous, hilarious guy he portrayed–as if there was ever any doubt. A huge loss. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
I am saddened and truly heart broken to hear of the passing of such a loved person. Mr. Mac was the only comedian who could ever make me laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Sigh. My mom died of the same thing…and Jim Hensen, Cameron Diaz’s father. PLEASE, if you have a family member with a history of heavy smoking and they have a lingering “cough/cold/flu thing,” INSIST that they get tested for pneumonia! It is something like the 5th leading cause of death, and it is SO preventable. BTW, what happens is, the patient goes into pneumonia- induced cardiac arrest.

I was very shocked and saddened when I heard the news. Bernie Mac was my favorite comedian. My husband says that I can’t find humor in jokes but Bernie Mac changed that. My heart and my prayers go out to his family and his friends. Bernie Mac will truly be missed. Even though I did not know Bernie Mac personally it feels like I lost someone in my own family. We all loved Bernie Mac but God loved him more. Rest in peace. You will truly be missed.

Bernie was the rarity who could be himself 100% of the time and it would be hard to distinguish the man from the characters he played, persona and artist-hand in hand. A true artist! This made his jokes and reactions so personable, like you were hearing it from a friend because you knew his personality was so distinguishable. We loved you Bernie!!! I’ll never forget laughing until I wept in the makeup room at the Bernie Mac Show, B-Mac at his best, turning his razor sharp wit & delivery loose, everyone diving out of the way so as not to be next in line. Truly the naturally funniest man on the planet.

I watch his show each night in syndication, and I can recall when the show first aired, I thought it was truly the funniest thing I have seen on tv in a very long time. I am deeply sadden by the death of Bernie Mac and my heart goes out to his family. When I contracted scaroidosis in 2004 and learned he had it too, I began to follow his career. I also have been in remission since 2005 and it is hard for me to believe that his recent bout with pneumonia did not contribute to his passing. I take a pneumonia shot to protect me from getting pneumonia because my lungs were so severely damaged by scaroidosis. God Bless You Bernie Mac!

Nobody knew “the man” was gone. The world did not even get to say goodbye. I did not want to believe it. I was at work and couldn’t cry. Bernie was one of the most incredible people I have ever had the honor to work with (on the bernie mac show) he was so warm and caring on top of the “funny”, just the nicests down to earth kind of guy. he always went out of his way for his crew and took care of the “little People” as they say. just a sad sad day to not have him around. my heart goes out to his wife and daughter, i cant imagine them having to face a day without his smiling face.

His death was even more shocking, because he was said to be doing well on FRIDAY (the day before he died) – Bernie Mac on the Mend – after a week or so of rumors that he was near death.
I suppose the conflicting information is best discussed elesewhere, but suffice to say that it was a severe blow to learn Saturday that he died when the news was 180 degrees opposite on the day before.
I was just sitting in front of my TV – in GERMANY – and I was reading the TV text: George Clooney and Brad Pitt on Bernie Mac’s funeral – and I thought: WHAT?????????????

You may ask what these people have in common? It is an autoimmune system dease called sarcodisis. It attacks mainly the lungs but can cause inflammation in any of the body’s organs. I have had it for over ten years. It flared up last winter and I got pnuemonia and almost died. There were three days where I sat up to sleep and I prayed hard for each and every breath. That incident changed my life, the way I think about life and myself and others. I am one blessed man. I made it through it by the grace of God. I wished it had been the same for Bernie Mac and Reggie White.
