Sometimes so-so matinees can means good nights. Sometimes not. But I just heard The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor mats are disappointing so the pic will probably stay in the mid-$40sM. So will The Dark Knight win the weekend again? According to big online ticketseller Fandango.com, the latest Batman installment is comprising 59% of this weekend’s ticket sales versus 17% for Mummy 3. Fortunately for Universal, the pic opened well overseas.
See my weekend prediction posting.

WOW, I find it hard to believe that TDK will slip less than 35% from last weekend from your 1st posting update if it’s to remain #1 with a high 40′s take but I could be wrong seeing how this movie have exceeded all expectations even the most optimistic thus far…Let’s see how your update of Friday numbers comes in tonight.
I must be missing something because I don’t understand how this is surprising news. Weekday matinees usually don’t sell well anyway, not unless it’s an “event” movie where people will take time off work to go stand in line. I would imagine that most people who want to see the Mummy will do it after they get off work and go to the evening and night shows. I suppose teenagers who are still out of school could be free to catch the matinee shows, but even they would probably prefer the later shows since Friday/Saturday are date nights. Hence the matinees shouldn’t be all that full…right?
But yes, I don’t know what to make of The Dark Knight selling a higher percentage of tickets than The Mummy. I do still think Mummy will win the weekend, but probably not by a large margin.
Take care of that virus-thingie, Nikki. We want you in fighting form.
I saw it today at the first showing (I have the day off and have seen everything else). There were about 20 people. That’s actually not all that bad considering it was 11:40 am. I think it will pull in about 42-45 million. It’s got the brand name and it’s the only thing out there for those that have already seen TDK. It will drop like a stone however after the first weekend.
I am SO not surprised.
What are examples of recent movies that had weak matinees but had strong nights?
the matinees look like a high forty million dollar opening which is perfectly respectable.
From all reports, Mummy 3 sounds like utter garbage on all fronts. And the screenwriters should be flogged for some of that dialogue.
Oh my God. Haven’t walked out of a movie in a couple of years but this thing was such horribly coma-inducing MST3K fodder that I just had to leave. Save your money. I wouldn’t usually comment but for the love of Weinstein, save your cash.
