I just received the following announcement:
New York and Los Angeles (August 27, 2008) – Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and the advertising industry’s ANA/AAAA Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast Talent Union Relations (JPC) today jointly announced an agreement to extend, through March 31, 2009, the terms of their Commercials Contracts. The extension adds six months to the previous two-year extension the parties agreed to, which covered the period from 2006 to 2008. That extension was set to expire on October 29, 2008.
The news at least delays whether or not SAG and AFTRA will negotiate the next contract jointly or separately.

Oh, joy! Six more months of having to accept ancillary use at scale as a condition of employment. Great job, Membership First.
Not.
Somebody, please, vote these total incompetents out of office once and for all.
It may mean that SAG and AFTRA go in together. Which would likely mean more money for performers. But that will out through the vagaries of negotiation. I would guess that both Unions thought it in the best interest of members. There is a lot more to the lake than what appears on the surface.
The extension does allow SAG to focus more clearly on the ongoing theatrical negotiations.
Isn’t this the group that fought so hard for the 2000 strike because the rates weren’t what they should be? Isn’t this the group that said get what the membership needs at all costs? Wasn’t the original extension made in order to explore new ways to compensate members for their work? What the hell is this one for?
here we go again ..wag the dog … nothing gets done
and the little guy gets it in the end.
I would like to see a bump now to tie us over to we negotiate.
And I think we would have more power in one year from now rather than six months from now.
I base this strictly on the holiday season, six moths from now we will have less commercials prepping for the holidays than we would in one year from now.
This is my opinion and I sticking with it and your opinion may not be the same, but that’s ok too.

So, lets see….
A list of contracts membership first can not negotiate

2>Commercial contract
3>Theatrical contract
Nicely done….I just voted, want to guess what faction didnt get a single vote from me?
Did you know that our staff could go and work for the AMPTP tomorrow? Because none of the current or previous board members ever put forth an anti-competition clause to in our hiring policy of new and/or existing hired staff. The same holds true with our NED, remember Bob Pisano? A former SAG NED during Mellissa Gilbert’s tenure and where is he working now?
As President and COO of the MPAA, Pisano has day-to-day operating responsibility for all association operations, domestic and international, other than Washington, DC based external and governmental affairs.
Before joining the MPAA in October 2005, he served as National Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Screen Actors Guild.
Previously, Pisano served as Executive Vice President and later Vice Chairman of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) where he oversaw all of the company’s business activities, including film, television, home entertainment, and consumer products operations.
Prior to MGM, Pisano was Executive Vice President of Paramount Pictures Corporation, serving as General Counsel and a member of the Office of the Chairman. He was also a partner with O’Melveny and Myers in Los Angeles, specializing in entertainment and business litigation matters for 12 years, including three years as the partner in charge of the firm’s office in Paris.
Pisano is a member of the Board of Directors of the Motion Picture and Television Fund and of the Executive Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The MPAA, and its international counterpart, the Motion Picture Association (MPA), are the voice and advocates of the American motion picture, home video, and television industries.
Vote for an independent candidate
Gary Watts…. #43 on your SAG ballot
Even if you only vote for one or two candidates
does this have to do with the threat of a sag strike??? if it does then this is awesome news cuz we may get a full tv season in.
