There’s more bad news for the movie studio part-owned by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner with MGM. Last summer, 11 extras dressed in Nazi army uniforms fell out of the back of a World War II-era troop carrier truck as it swung around a corner in central in Berlin during the filming of Tom Cruise’s biopic Valkyrie, sending the actors to the hospital with injuries. Now, the actors are suing Cruise’s United Artists for $11 million, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel. It reports that the extras’ lawyer claims United Artists knew the trucks used in the filming were not entirely safe because there was an internal studio memo about the rickety railings.

How typical, Nazi’s always acting the victim.
WWII is a hobby of mine and I love war movies but I have absolutely no desire to see this. And this news just sealed the deal. Cruise and Wagner couldn’t pony up $10 for some screws for christ’s sake?
Studio memo about the problem?
Two word solution: Stunt pay!
No lawsuit for stunts.
Next time they’ll know better but they won’t act better.
Wow. That Der Spiegel article has a S@#& load of errors in it.
camp classic for christmas
@peggy , you’re assuming the plaintiffs are actually telling the truth about this “memo”. How would extras know about an internal company memo? Most of the time they don’t even get scripts!
The Nazi extras will have to show negligence, and then usually their award would be confined to actual damages. I’m assuming UA had insurance and took care of their hospital bills (although with German National Health, it probably was free). That just leaves lost wages and psychological damages (they can never wear a Nazi uniform again – that might be a good thing – or sit in the back of an open-air truck – how often does that happen).
Bottom line, it sounds like one of those nuisance suits. They probably think Tom Cruise will pay for it. And they’re filing now rather than after the movie’s release because they know this isn’t going to be a big blockbuster.
$11 million is a ridiculous amount for a bunch of extras to sue for when no-one was seriously hurt. Greedy A-holes. They’ll be lucky to get $11 each tops.
I hope somebody puts the footage on youtube. I’d like to hear about one project where some extras didn’t try to fuck the production out of something. AND they’re the majority that advocate voting pro strike. PS – I thought Germans weren’t allowed to wear Nazi uniforms at all ever again?
You may, for historic purposes – like this one.
I.E. for courses of action taking place or historical occurences. Please don’t mix up with ‘reenactments’.
So you can film scenes to flesh out your film. You may not throw a party where everyone has to wear swastikas.
In a nutshell: Nazi symbilosm is verboten, and not in a lax way. There are exceptions, but they are only related to history.
You may film ‘Downfall’. But the ‘Wolfenstein’ Game will not have Nazi symbols in the German distribution.
I agree with the one who said this is a camp classic in the making. VALKYRIE is Tom Cruise’s answer to Faye Dunaway’s MOMMIE DEAREST and his career will hopefully go as far into the toilet as hers went. I still haven’t gotten over Tommy’s hilarious marching in TAPS back in the 1980s when we were hilariously supposed to believe that Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton and other military types would quake in Tommy’s puny presence. In regard to the accident in Germany, I’m not surprised because everyone knows Hollywood filmmakers treat overseas cast and crew worse than shit. Too bad some of the guys didn’t die so Tommy would get sued for everything he’s got (and doesn’t deserve).
