UPDATE: More Letterman About McCain Thursday…
Let me explain before you watch the 9-minute YouTube footage (below): I’ve just been told that on David Letterman’s Late Show tonight, the talk show host caught John McCain in a big fat lie as to why the GOP candidate cancelled tonight’s appearance. (Hint: it involves Katie Couric.) Here’s what happened: about 90 minutes before the Letterman taping, McCain’s people phoned to say he was suspending his campaign because of the financial crisis and racing to the airport to get back to Washington DC, so had to scrub Dave’s show. (post continues below)
I’m told the senator himself called Letterman to explain, “I have to go back and fix the economy. I’m going to get on a plane now and go.” The show scrambled and at the last minute booked Keith Olbermann. When it was time for tonight’s taping, Letterman explained to the cameras why McCain was a no-show and even had nice things to say about the guy. That is, until the behind the scenes people in The Late Show control room were shocked to see a live feed of McCain being miked in Katie Couric’s CBS News studio at the same time he was supposed to be in Dave’s studio. Letterman was informed of this during the commercial break, and, when the show came back, ordered the control room to cut to the live McCain/Couric feed. Then Letterman bashed McCain for not being honest. “He doesn’t seem to be racing back to the airport, does he?” Letterman asked the audience.

Hey while we’re at it , let’s suspend the election and keep W in office until he can say “mission accomplshed” again when he defeats the evil economy…..
McCain is an astounding liar and coward. Only the most knuckle dragging among us think otherwise. 90% think the debates should go on and 80% think this is a political ploy. And for more right-wing stupidity check out Stupid Sarah on Katie Couric.
Hey Amelia,
How about… I wonder how long it took you to come up with all of that? Did you just go to a GOP blog and regurgitate their talking points? Your flop-sweat-filled nervous desperation is about as transparent as McCain’s lack of anything remotely resembling integrity.
I have never ever seen a politician bottom out so badly in my entire life in a campaign, presidential or otherwise.
Jack N.,
I’m sorry that Letterman has an opinion and is not being booted from his network for Conan. Listen, if you like extremely broad comedy like Leno you should really check out “Disaster Movie.” You would probably love it.
How about they both lie and neither are deserving of anyone’s support?
“If McCain can’t do 20 things at once he’s not qualified to be President. He wants to back out of the debate because he’ll be asked tough questions about an economy he had a big role in ruining. At this point his campaign is running along about as smoothly as a car in a Keystone Cops movie.
Comment by McCain in panic —”
Newsflash: the debate is about Foreign Policy. And, McCain isn’t backing out, he’s been asking Obama to do town hall meetings with him for MONTHS. And Obama, the scared, inexperienced man child he is, has refused. Probably because he wouldn’t be able to use his, uh, er, uh — teleprompter.
Letterman is a tool. He knows EXACTLY what went down: McCain canceled because he’s flying back to D.C. to help with this bail out bill for a financial crisis created by the Democrats with their Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac debacle (actually do some research instead of listening to pro Obama media and you’ll find out I’m right; Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and Jamie Gurelic are right in thick of this mess) and since Obama held Press Conference, McCain was booked on CBS News at the last minute to respond before he flew back to D.C.
Dave’s been around a long time, he knows how this stuff works, he’s just in the tank with all the rest of the left wing media. Why else would he book Keith “I Love Barack SOOO MUCH!” Oberman?
Wake the hell up people…
“It’s a bad week for Obama” … you must live in the same delusional world that McCain is living in. McCain went from a slight lead in most polls to being behind by anywhere from 4-9 points. I would say it’s been a very good week for Obama.

Think again. Have you actually looked at the data in those recent polls? A majority of people polled in the recent ABC News/Washington Post poll were DEMOCRATS. The only polls that matter are the state by state polls as we elect Presidents by electoral votes, not popular national votes. State by state, McCain is winning this election.
Whatever you need to believe, guys. Has it ever been otherwise for the right-wing? You’ll look at a circle and pronounce it to be a hexagon while declaring “show me where the angles aren’t!” Cute. But irritating. A constant reminder of how bad public education is in this country.
What makes it really bad is McCain personally lied to Dave. He could have had a lackey do it and then later claim it was a communications mix up. Or he could have told the truth and begged Dave to forgive him and he’d make it up to him. But to personally lie like that and pop up on CBS that’s really scummy. And he should have figured out that Dave or someone would notice. The news media is going to make a big deal out of this!
If we’re going to play “dredge up a name from the political past,” here’s one the mainstream media has seemingly ignored in the the wake of the past two weeks: CHARLES KEATING, the center of the last major American economic scandal and John McCain’s good buddy. Funny how the tanking Republican candidate has aligned himself to bogus “market forces” and corrupt lobbyists/tycoons who have shafted the public time and again.
As for Letterman, that’s pretty hilarious. If Obama had pulled the same stunt/lie, I would hope to see his feet in the fire as well.
Yes, the debate this friday is about national defense.
When will people get it thru their thick skulls that national defense costs A LOT OF MONEY. 3 trillion dollar war anyone? And because we are spending and will continue to spend extraordinary amounts of money on Iraq and counter-terrorism I think the topic of the economy is inextricably tied to the topic of friday’s debate.
BTW, who really wants to hear from mccain on this anyway? He is not only one of the architects of the problem, he is self-professed not to know much about economics and until recently said the economy is sound.
In Hollywood terms, that’s like inviting the delivery guy into a notes meeting for a romantic comedy they’ve never read.
DPersonally, I am glad McCain cancelled his appearance. These talk shows are not the right venue for politics and they simply blur the lines between news and entertainment. I just wish he would have made himself unavailable to Katie Couric as well. The network news anchors have angered me more this election cycle than I can ever remember and I have decided to boycott all of them. I was not a supporter of John McCain during the primaries, however, I am voting against Barack Obama as a referendum against the media machine that seems to be shoving him down our throats. Joseph McCarthy was right. Its’s time for conservatives to hold the media responsible for their open bias and boycott those in the media who show so much open contempt for conservatives and those of us with a different point-of-view. It’s left wing fascism. Hit them in their wallets folks and they will shut the hell up.
Hey Nikki…no more political posts, okay? It brings out far too many partisan nutjobs. If we’re going to insult each other and start flame wars, at least let it be industry related.
Sarah Palin is not an idiot because she’s from the 57th state, she’s an idiot because she doesn’t believe in friggin dinosaurs. What kind of disease do you people suffer from? This inferiority complex you all share is exhausting.
Yikes: is that what people say when they see you? To answer your accusation — McCain can’t raise his arms enough to type on a keyboard because he was tortured and Obama attacked him in an ad for it. Do you, like, watch TV? Even Joe Biden said it was “terrible.” (P.S. your second sentence made no sense – and certainly not common sense)
Jack Burton: no flop sweat or desperation here, unless you count liberals sweating the polls in several states where McCain is gaining leads on Obama. McCain not have integrity? After letting another guy get out of the Hanoi Hilton before him when McCain knew it would mean more torture if he stayed? McCain has more intergrity in his little toe than Obama has in his whole body. (P.S. I hope you aren’t trying to make a living as a writer in the industry – your descriptions are pretty silly)
The Straight Talk Express just ran into a ditch.
Bravo to Dave on a job well done!
Letterman is a left-wing hack, nothing more. If Obama had cancelled the same way, Davey would have told the world what a wonderful citizen he is and how lucky we are to have him. McCain will be fine – Davey, not so much.
Dave, if you happen to be reading this… somewhere upstairs Mr. Carson is looking down on you and smiling. Late night at its finest.
ZOMG! McCain canceled on Letterman! Yeah, he should skip the news shows to please the Obama-worshipping Letterman. Letterman is a nothing but a tired, arrogant old a$$hole as are most of the commenters on this blog.
I’m so tired of McCain mentioning 9/11 and his 5 years of being held POW in Vietnam. And he has the scars to prove it. Yeah, yeah. Him and a lot of other Veterans. Instead of being an actual maverick and a quality candidate, his campaign is all about telling lies and stealing Obama’s ideas. Now he’s the candidate for change? Instead of choosing a qualified and worthy running mate, he gets a hockey mom from the sticks to attract the disgruntled Hillary supporters. His campaign is very phony and gimmicky with no substance and for all his talk about Obama being a celebrity and the Messiah. That’s what Palin is. A flash in the pan overnight celebrity. But her 15 minutes is just about up. McCain must fancy himself as the Messiah if he thinks he’s going to go save the economy. Give me a break. Nobody believes it. He’s fooling himself. They don’t need him in Washington. He should just go to the debate, take his whuppin’ and if he’s still so gung ho for the publicity, he can get his carcass to Washington to get in the way.
It is painfully funny to see republicians try to spin this one. This whole thing is so absurd!
Gee, Dave — bitter, much? That clip had all the rancor of a jilted prom date. “Wah, John doesn’t love me…” Oh grow up, already.
The man had a choice to make, and he made it: He could go on a serious NEWS program and discuss the economy, or waste time on your inane little program, listening to your lame ass jokes while the rest of us watch the economy swirl down the toilet.
Newsflash – Dave might have more money than God, but that doesn’t make McCain OR Obama accountable to him for every second of their time.
What are we, stupid? Sure Dave had nice things to say about McCain – he was setting up for the slam. But of all of this, Paul’s comments about Palin really chapped my hide. So she’s an attractive woman – what does that have to do with anything?
Here’s the other shoe — you might want to try it on and see how it feels:
If Obama were the subject of conversation, and Paul had stated the obvious — “He’s a really black man.” Would that have been funny? No. Would it have ANYTHING to do with the election, or even the topic of conversation on Letterman? No. Would he have been strung up by his toes and called a racist? Hell, yes – and rightly so.
Obama supporters and all their jokes don’t seem to get it — they’re swinging we 18 percenters in the opposite direction. Worship change then turn your heads and spout sexist remarks. That changes nothing for the majority of our nation’s population.
Both candidates are equally unqualified for office, but if I have to choose one, I’m not going to vote with the camp that slings poison darts at the opposition because of gender.
And btw — Joe, with your little pie charts and percentages, and all of your economic soundness — what do you live under a rock? Go take a stroll down Wall Street, my friend.
Wow, Letterman has ‘no reason to lie about what McCain told him’? Letterman is a far-left moonbat, that is reason enough for him to say or do whatever it takes to help Obama. Just like the polls that oversample democrats by 15% to put their guy in the lead.
As for Obama’s lie about McCain and computers – do you even follow the campaign? Obama’s ad accused McCain of not being able to use email and being clueless about the internet. McCain is one of the most tech-savvy people in the senate and has been using the internet for years, but he finds it too painful to type because of the injuries he sustained as a POW. His wife does the typing for him.
Obama knows all that, hence the term ‘lie’.
The best thing that could possibly happen to boost Letterman’s ratings is if his wretched heart exploded and he bled from mouth nose and ears and died a painful death while doing his tiresom monologue.
What a fool!!!!!!!!!!
If this had been Obama they would have handled in a much nicer way the media is so biased towards Obama that they turn every little thing about Mc/Cain against him They should be more conerned about the econonmy Barack is running on NOTHING People are voting for him just to prove they’re not anti black has nothing to do woth what thay think he is able to do as President They are all the time talking about Palins inexperience abd leave out the fact he’s a junior senator with only 2 years experience himself
