SUNDAY AM: After last weekend’s disastrous box office (the lowest in 5 years), Hollywood was dreading this weather-impacted weekend. But its $105 milion total is +34% ahead of last year’s $78 million, so the studios breathed a sight of relief. It was a crowded cineplex with four major wide releases — and not one of them a four-quadrant film. Focus Features’ political comedy Burn After Reading finished No 1 for the weekend with $19.4 million, and Lionsgate’s The Family That Preys No. 2 with $18 million. With yet another PG-rated Tyler Perry crossover hit on its hands, the studio understandably made an overall deal with the writer/producer/director/actor recently.
Given that Preys was playing in 581 less theaters than Burn yet had a better per screen average ($8,705 vs $7,319), it’s quite a feat that it finished Friday neck and neck with the first post-Oscar Coen Brothers feature starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton who have either won or been nominated for Academy Awards. Then again it was R-rated, and Prey was PG (but starring Kathy Bates who also has an Oscar and Alfre Woodard a nominee). Burn received better reviews than Prey. So it’s a wash.
Overture Films only paid $12 million to acquire North American rights to Righteous Kill, which earned 3rd place and $16.5 million for the weekend. Stars Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino attracted just a one-quadrant older male audience. The problem is that neither actor has starred in a decent drama lately, including this hackneyed script.
Picturehouse’s The Women took the 4th spot with $10 million. Written and directed and produced by Murphy Brown creator Diane English, it’s a low-budget $16.5 million update of the famed
Clare Booth Luce play and 1939 George Cukor film. Full disclosure: it’s hard for me to speak objectively about this chick flick because I keep campaigning for more movies about women over 40. Last June, I bitched that it was wrong to let a pic starring a quality cast of Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Bette Midler, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Candice Bergen, and Debra Messing die a quick death in limited release with a tiny P&A put out by a shuttering studio. Even if rotten, I saw potential for some savvy Sex In The City-exploiting. Warner Bros heard me, took another look, and decided to release The Women wide with a normal marketing budget. And I applaud them for that decision. Of course, it’s disappointing that this frenemy comedy received the worst reviews of all four opening films (although Roger Ebert loved it). But considering its low cost, The Women had a successful debut: it’ll do nearly twice the opening weekend gross of two wildly more expensive pics starring male stars: Kevin Costner’s Swing Vote and Eddie Murphy’s Meet Dave this past summer. As I’ve remarked before, if there’s room in a studio’s slate for Harold & Kumar-type pics aimed at stoners, there’s room for women’s films aimed at mature females, too.
The rest of the Top 10 were holdovers. DreamWorks/Paramount’s Tropic Thunder crossed the $100 million mark on Friday.

Wow! Seems like Perry has alot of tricks in his bag still, even if his releases seems to be of a recycle plot. Kudos to him
Not surprising is seeing The Women scoring big. Read so many predictions elsewhere with many predicting it will bomb. Eem, if it is about men with titled ‘The Men’ then it would have been a different story, wouldn’t?
Deniro and Pacino, what a joke! Why people would still pay money to see them is a no brainer.
Nevertheless, glad to see the B.O back in biz, after last week’s disaster
After all your whining I find it ironic that The Women is one of the worst reviewed movies of the year.
Actually, I’d say The Women did exactly as well as expected. The horrible reviews prevented any kind of super-break out, but it performed like a popular niche film that got solid support from the intended group and no one else. Just like the late 90s dramedys that centered around all black casts (The Wood, The Brothers, etc), The Women kept its budget in line and thus will make its money back by Sunday. Had it done $20 million, I would have been surprised (mainly because of the reviews, and the somewhat cynically pandering trailers), but a $12 million opening is right in line with history and logic.
Tyler Perry beats Rober De Niro, Al Pacino, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, The Coen Brothers coming off an Oscar winning film, Meg Ryan ultimate chick flick. I think the real reason “Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys” will win the weekend is because of stars Kathy Bates.
Rent the Joan Crawford , Rosalind Russell movie first..
It was funny the new “The Women” is NOT.
No surprise that BURN AFTER READING is a bomb considering two of the smuggest and most over-exposed airheads (George Clooney and Brad Pitt) are in it. When is Hollywood going to realize that the audience is sick of them?
No surprise that RIGHTEOUSKILL is a bomb either. It’s been a long time since Al Pacino or Robert De Niro did a halfway decent film. At this point, those two are just in it for the paychecks. I guess De Niro’s wife wanted some more jewels.
No surprise that THE FAMILY THAT PREYS is number one. Tyler Perry makes films about family values and the audience flocks to see them. Gee, I wonder when Hollywood is going to catch up?
WOW!!! Burn After Reading is #1.
Great for the cast and crew. Congratulations!

Who said BAR bombed? Its going to be number this opening weekend. BAR production cost (US$ 29-37m) is less than Tyler’s movie, which has prodn costs of US$ 55m. So its Tyler/s movie which is doing less than expected. In fact most critics are projecting BAR to open only at US$ 13m, but apparently its doing more than that!
And you know what, nobody knows Tyler something, outside America!!! Whereas Brad and George are very popular internationally, so the overall take of BAR worldwide will be much greater than that Tyler guy’s movie, whoever he is!
Thank you, Ms. Stevens. Your check will be ready for pick-up this Monday afternoon in Tyler Perry’s office.
Wow, look at Crystal the box office analyst and cultural critic. So Burn After Reading is a flop even though it’s going to be the Coen brother’s highest grossing weekend ever? Tell me, dear genius, what was the projected weekend take SUPPOSED to be for this film? It certainly seems to be meeting its expectations for the weekend despite your efforts to paint it otherwise. Gee, I doubt you have the slightest idea of what you’re talking about.
the Women will make it’s money back by Sunday? Can you explain this please. Thanks. Are you adding in the dribs and drabs for the following weeks along with video rental and sales and international business. I guess the women worked for scale?
‘Righteous Kill’ isn’t a bomb; Overture Films only paid $10 million to acquite this film’s North American distribution rights.
anne, just because a movie opens at number one doesn’t mean it’s going to turn a profit. The budget for that was WAY higher than the budget for Tyler Perry’s movie. Tyler knows to keep his budgets down which is why he’s so successful. Sorry but you liberal Clooney kool-aid drinkers need to give it a rest. The audience is sick of cynicism and the Hollywood agenda being pushed down their throats. They just want to enjoy a film that doesn’t consist of being cursing at one another in between beating each other and saying “fuck” a lot.
This is usually an industry site and I believe Crystal must be only a delusional fan. Crystal do we need to teach you about budgets, negative costs and returns? You may want to just stick to watching Tylers TBS show.
Good for the boxoffice. After last week’s disaster it’s good to see any films take in over 10m regardless of reviews. This is what we need.
Oh and Burn After Reading is playing in 400 more theaters than The Family That Preys and the latter still gets a bigger haul per day? That doesn’t tell you something? LOL!
C’mon. Can Warner Brothers say “Toldja” for being right about “The Women” being a bad movie? I’m sure they’re glad they sank more marketing/print money into that film.
Shouldn’t the success of Sex and The City have been used to help new fresh female faces/voices get a shot in Hollywood rather than wasting it on a wider release for a stinker from the old guard? Could we put our personal issues aside and maybe try to get Hollywood back to producing quality films?
Will be interesting to see if women hate ‘The Women’ as much as the critics did (9% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Also whether it will make make back all of the dough the studio put into marketing – something like 25 mill on top of the reported 16 mill budget.
I doubt Burn After Reading is in a dead heat with Tyler Perry’s movie. This sounds like inflated or deflated numbers if you ask me. Hollywood wants BAR to be number 1, So they’ll just make it happen, even if they hsve to fudge the results. I knew that when last night it was reported that yet another Tyler Perry film had outperformed yet another white mainsteam movie that by the next morning suddenly it would be called a draw. What a joke!
I plan on seeing BAR during the week. With the changing dynamic of work schedules why isn’t the entire week more a factor in a movie’s first week success?
Methinks Crystal forgot to take her meds. BAR has far from bombed and is rated R against Tyler Perry’s movie which is rated PG-13. Even with a lower theater count I expected Tyler to come out #1 for that exact reason.
I saw BAR last night in a sold out theater and everyone was having a good time. I think this is going to have good word of mouth.
Did this get linked to the SludgeReport again?
Spare us your Wal-Mart greeter analysis of box office, please, Ms. Stevens. The Coen brothers are going to eke out a profit for Focus with BURN AFTER READING when all is said and done–their DVDs also sell very well because their movies get a lot of repeat viewing. Thanks for playing!
i see …if it s a clooney movie the drudge r. people came here!?! but telling the true i will see burn because of brad pitt and john.
The Coen’s Raising Arizona had “family values” too. So there.
Anne,
You think Perry’s movie has production costs of $55 million?
Put down that crack pipe!
Black people have and always have been a sharp movie audience, when it comes to opening weekend and having strong awareness. This is completely expected.
The Women and the Coen Bros. movie cancel eachother out, because of the stronger than usual appeal to upmarket movie goers. If one of those titles were opening this weekend, the performance would be decently better.
Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino’s retirement planning walkthrough movies, Righteous Kill, is obviously a bad movie going in. The thing is, is is TNT bad and funny – or, is it just bad? Both of those guys haven’t tried since 1995.
