It’s looking like an $80M total weekend box office, down 10% from last year.

What in the world has HAPPENED to the career of Kate Hudson! Taking second billing to Dane Cook in MY best friends Girl! Which also stars Jason Biggs! It was not reviewed in advance and has received a 93% negative response from critics on Rottentomatoes! After making a name for herself with “Almost Famous” she has made one mediocre, or bad film after another, and at 29 years old will need to reinvent herself! Boy does she need a new agent! Where’s Ari Gold when you need him!
I’m shocked “Ghost Town” opened so poorly. I’m seeing “The Duchess” this weekend, but it seemed that most people I talked to were interested in the Gervais film – the studio sure bought a lot of ad time. Ouch, that hurts.
Guess Ricky is going to be relegated back to co-star/cameo status.
Ghost Town didn’t stand a chance because A) it doesn’t star anyone, B) at face value it rips off The Sixth Sense and C) it’s a whiny British comedy… if the general American public wanted British comedy, we’d be watching the original The Office instead of a remake.
Ghost Town was pretty much doomed to failure due to its terrible trailer which really made it look like a Touchstone/Hollywood Pictures product from twelve years ago. Sneak previews during the Bangkok dominated weekend might have helped. I guess they were looking for around 7 or 8 Million this weekend in order to bump up the screencount next weekend. Typical Working Title behavior.
Oops….
What a surprise, yet another Tyler Perry film without any legs.
Duchess is only on 7 screens but must be one to watch. It went to Number 1 in the UK after good to mixed reviews.
Lakeview Terrace is the highest-grossing film in America? It must be September.
The current crop of movies are just too depressingly boring. Nothing stands out from the crowds and worst, the actors are yesterday news.
Can’t wait for Nov & Dec to come around for Bond and Madagascar to be in the theaters
Thank goodness they featured Dane Cook in the ads.
Now I know not to go see it.
Thanks for the warning marketing dept.
It’s tough to feel sorry about My Best Friend’s Girl, it’s not only an uninspired script and unoriginal take on a tired theme, but it was filmed during the writer’s strike (with the new writer’s participation), so I hope the thing ends everybody’s career.
And Dane Cook and Kate Hudson? Not exactly “A-list” talent.
Ghost Town is only on 1500 theaters, I think there hoping for good word of mouth in upcoming weeks. Plus Dreamworks did not do a good job of marketing it, they have been concentrating on Eagle Eye
I don’t think Ricky will lose too much sleep over it. He’s scared shitless at the prospect of being a Hollywood leading man. His role was intriguing; the movie, alas, was not.
What a pathetic weekend movie-wise. Nothing new is decent. I liked Lakeview Terrace back when it was called Unlawful Entry and starred Kurt Russell and Ray Liotta. Seriously, that yuppies-under-siege scenario ran its course in the early nineties and should still be dead.
In regard to Kate Hudson and the abyss to which her career has plummetted, I strongly suggest that she start doing dramas again because playing Goldie Hawn lite isn’t going to carry her as long as it did her more mother.
Why does Dane Cook even have a career?
Too bad about GHOST TOWN. It’s a charming film but needed more star power. Tea Leoni never was/looked better.
And don’t miss the French thriller TELL NO ONE. Great!
I went see Ghost Town, which I believe was the best movie to watch this weekend. With positive reviews it’s had, I’m surprised people didn’t check this out.

Good lord.
You don’t honestly believe that Gervais is “scared shitless” at being a Hollywood leading man do you?
LOL!
If he actually was scared shitless of a successful Hollywood career, he’d keep his ass in Britain and continue doing bad television.
He wouldn’t go begging for scraps in the US.
An actor only says that kind of thing when they know they’ve got a piece of shit film on their hands and they know it’ll bomb. Just like when one of my friends gets dumped by a guy and then snipes that “he was lousy in bed anyway”. It’s called saving face, Dean. Look into it.
Meanwhile, not that Tea Leoni has had yet another flop to her credit, when is she going to finally stick a fork in her “career” and give up on movies? If she wasn’t married to Duchovny (whose career is equally spotty although at least he had a hit show which is more than we can say for Tea), she wouldn’t even be cast in these things.

Tea Leoni chose poorly here by doing this forgettable, uninspired comedy with Gervais. She was offered the lead role in an acquaintance of mine’s debut rom-com feature, a project that sounds miles better than this film. Yet she passed. Another red notch in her floundering career. I like her but she needs tp choose projects more wisely.
As for Gervais, I don’t get his appeal..and I don’t think he has much appeal with American audiences in general. Never seen the Brit Office and the one episode of HBO’s Extras I saw put me to sleep. His fellow Brit Simon Pegg seems to have more appeal than him. I’m wondering how Pegg’s new comedy will fare when it opens in a few weeks.
