Los Angeles, (Sept. 30, 2008) – The Screen Actors Guild released the following statement from SAG National executive director and chief negotiator Doug Allen in response to the AMPTP’s Sept. 29, 2008 statement:
“We are disappointed to hear that the employers and their AMPTP representatives are refusing to engage in the process necessary to complete a deal. We do not believe that their rejection of our reasonable request is in the best interests of our members or the industry. Our National Negotiating Committee will be meeting later this week to consider management’s response.”

Are We There Yet
Well, Are We There Yet, you better reconcile your own words. You support UFS over MF but you want to see SAG survive as a viable entity. Again, it won’t, if UFS gets its way. You need to understand – they want to kill SAG, don’t you? They’ve stated exactly that, often. Yes, if things go exactly their way, there will be an actor’s union at the end of that road, but it won’t be called SAG, and it won’t, in fact, BE SAG. It will be a different entity entirely, with a different structure and a different name and a whole new set of problems brought on by merging with non-actors. It won’t be SAG. Don’t kid yourself. This may go either way – who knows? But one thing that will be made clear to the membership is – a no vote on this ballot is both a no vote to force the AMPTP to bargain in good faith and cut the bullshit, and, it will be a vote to send SAG to the meat farm. So, if you want to end up with half the residuals as a member of “Uncle Joe’s Actor’s Union,” then, by all means vote yes.
Dear Are We There Yet — AWTY,
My labeling you and others as “termites” is not a “barb.”
As I said in my last post (addressed to “still confused”), “termite” is a technical term. “Boring” is a common union-busting tactic, practiced by termites, in tandem with others, who engage in more above-ground anti-union activities.
Union-busting, or “Winning Workplace Freedom,” is a pretty advanced form of class warfare, and one of the most effective. The psy-ops are very sophisticated. The most lucrative positions are held by lawyers and PR executives.
And in some Democratic, even liberal circles, Winning Workplace Freedom is a perfectly respectable profession. Being CEO of Burson-Marsteller didn’t hurt Mark Penn’s moral standing with Bill and Hillary.
So, for better or worse, there isn’t a lot of shame attached to the role of termite. It’s a job. Some adventurous types are even willing to do it as volunteers.
But I don’t need to tell YOU that. You’re familiar with the literature.
And if you’re not a termite, who are you? Will the real AWTY please step out of the closet?
I think this thread is pretty much played out, but some other time we should discuss your assertion that you are not only an actor, but a member of the acting aristocracy. (“I am among the top 5% of earners in the guild FOR MANY YEARS NOW.”)
That would explain your flacking on behalf of “Unite-for-Strength.” If you really are one of the elite, u4s shares your concerns and they will take care of you.
Thanks, Franklin, for the two options: “sign or strike”. “I’ll take strike for five hundred, Alex.”
There’s some writing on the wall as of today. Can y’all read it?
In general: I thought I was clear on who the “pussies” are/were. If the pussy-hat fits your head, wear it with pride and conviction. But please, random posters, don’t put words in my mouth. I’m well aware and appreciative of other SAG members who are truly concerned, who care about how this contract plays out and who offer positive insight on that issue. I believe a lot of you mean well but are blinded by misinformation and opposition tactics. Things will become very clear, very soon.
And “LP” – I’m not David”There Yet”, you’re talking primarily about the direction the union is heading (and whether you like or dislike it). Your statement of “there are many, many of us out here who have lost all faith in their ability to lead this union” is a bit grandiose. The recent election would beg to differ. But the MF/U4S contention will go on for some time and isn’t the topic here. Though your opinions are as interesting and welcomed as anyone’s.
No, I’m speaking particularly of the current contract negotiations, and I strongly support the people already in place to get this deal done. They’re experienced and know what they’re doing. There’s no fear and no saber-rattling. This is how fair union contracts are accomplished. It’s a step-by-step process, and I would assume very specific and detailed.
Said negotiators will not change with the new board members, nor will Doug be removed from that committee. He maybe could quit, though I doubt he would – he’s a finisher. (Lord knows, I’d want to quit after the meager show of union support he’s received.) Again, to do so would be counter-productive and nobody in SAG wants that to happen. Whether any of us like or dislike them, they’re what we’ve got so we’d better support them.
And I apologize if I was a bit harsh in my earlier comments. I didn’t mean to say that everyone who is unhappy with the current state of SAG affairs is a whining pussy (just the uninformed blowhards who bitch about things without having a better plan themselves). Joliffe, and I’m not sure if I’m flattered or insulted by your unhinged ravings. I don’t know much about the man. Sounds like you have a problem with Mr. Joliffe, not me. And by the way – I really hesitate to call people names online or anywhere else, but you’re an ignorant douchebag.

I think it’s time to put up or shut up. I would vote for a strike despite the economy.
Our current situation has kept the industry at half paralysis anyway. Let’s make a move – one way or the other.
I really wish we could change the name of the game-
why do we have to negotiate with the AMPTP? Why Not come up with a mult-tiered contract system? some better for actors, some better for producers; then the producers will have to compete for those contracts, we could bully them by offering only 8 contracts to 9 studios, and tell one of them, that they are out of the movie business (the money will stay in the market- as the investors will simply work with other studios).
Hey if the studios dont bite on this, we could take them to court for colusion and anti-trust violations.
…
but again, on deaf ears they fall- and we again David takes on Goliath with an ampuated arm and no sling shot….
Music of Michael Jackson is going to live for ever no matter what, I think It’s became a legendof ‘pop’, He was so stressfullast time and has lots of problems, poor guy – that was probably end for him – so sad all we can do is keep his music in our hearts.
