Few Hollywood folks have picked as many showbiz fights as Spike Lee. So I was amused when I read in the coming New Yorker magazine (article not online) that he was ending one feud and seeming to start another. I can’t remember all the spats. But a very public one took place back in 1997 when Lee criticized Quentin Tarantino for using the word “nigger” in movies. More recently, Spike started an international battle with Clint Eastwood. At a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, Lee accused him of omitting black soldiers from his two recent movies about Iwo Jima, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Eastwood explained that he had left the black soldiers out because none had actually raised the flag, adding that “a guy like that should shut his face.” Lee shot back, saying Eastwood sounded like “an angry old man,” and that “the man is not my father and we’re not on a plantation either.” (So Lee’s new feature opening this month, Miracle at St. Anna, answers eastwood: it’s a WWII film about the U.S. Army’s all-black 92nd
division that battled the Nazis during the Italian campaign.)
Lee tells The New Yorker that he ended the feud with Eastwood at a Lakers game (presumably during the recent basketball season’s playoffs). He said he saw Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg, and Eddie Murphy sitting together, so he went up to Spielberg and said, ” ‘Steven, it’s over with Clint Eastwood.’ Steven laughed and said, ‘I’ll call Clint and tell him in the morning.’ I said, ‘It’s over.’ He said, ‘Good.’ ”
But during the interview Lee may have started another feud, this time with Judd Apatow. During a break from scoring his new film with Terence Blanchard, a Sony Pictures Studio employee approached carrying a cardboard tube that contained a poster of Miracle at St. Anna and asking the men to sign it so it could be mounted in the hallway next to posters for other movies whose scores had been recorded there. ” ‘Yeah, O.K.,’ Lee said, brusquely. He added, ” ‘Don’t put us next to Judd Apapoe [sic], whatever that guy is,” Lee interrupted. ’We gotta be next to Spielberg and Williams!’ “

My brother from another, Spike shouldn’t have blamed Clint Eastwood in the first place he should have blamed the American History books who have painted history ALL WHITE, ALL NIGHT since the being of this country.
The Judd Apatow diss is Spike just being funny. I am sure Spike held his on the Racist movie Distant Thunder so he just needed to vent his tongue rage with a target he could get the most headlines with, without losing work in Hollywood.
Does anyone remember seeing one black in Saving Private Ryan? Nope, we were erased from history in that movie too.
Spike going up to Spielberg is another grandstanding opportunity to be heard. Sometimes you can kill the messenger and the real message which is – true hurts.
As I told Reverend Jesse Jackson last year – that Hollywood has never had a civil rights movement. The movement never made it Willshire Blvd. It died at Crenshaw and 110th street back in the 50s.
Always with the race-baiting. Always with the hurt feelings. Always with the misunderstandings. Bleech! We folks down here on the plantation say, “Shut your face, Lee.” History won’t be kind to his output — and that includes Do the Right Thing.
Say what you will, Mr. Tactless or no, Spike has written, produced and directed nearly 50 projects. How many of us WISH we could say the same? Nearly all. So until those of us who choose to comment here can step into the same professional ring as an Eastwood, Spielberg, Lee or even an Apatow, let’s just shut our yaps, work on our own projects and have a nice day.
Much ado about nothing…
TadAllagash:
Where are the Asian-American soldiers in MIRACLE OF ST. ANNA? Hispanic-American? As you said, ALL “hyphen” Americans died fighting for freedom in that war.
You and little Spike Lee are typical racist hypocrites.
Self promotion – the bread and butter of showbiz!
lee is notorious for shameless self promotion and controversy -its how he started his career in New York. This is just another one. Apatow to Lee is like apples to giraffes. Stupid stuff.
I was 8 when “Do the Right Thing” came out. Now that i’m 26, I’ve really enjoyed revisiting all the old Spike Lee joints. He’s not just a Black Director….he’s a amazing director that usually uses urban themes.
The man is always feuding with someone — it drives him. Like Miss Daisy. Is Rob Marshall going to do a musical about all the gay soldiers who fought in WWII? Lets cut the shit and call a spade a spade (pardon the pun). The only reason Spike gets anything on the big screen is because he’s angry and black. It’s his schtick. If a white man ever made “She Hate Me”, “25th Hour”, “Bamboozled”, “Summer of Sam”, “He Got Game”, “Girl 6″, “Clockers” “Crooklyn”, “Jungle Fever” and the ever popular “School Daze”, he wouldn’t be allowed on any studio lot, except to take out the garbage. He should kiss asses and be thankful there are a load of dumb studio execs who keep greenlighting his crap.
Go away Spikey Man.
Spike lee is a talented director who deserves credit for pushing the envelope constantly and cultivating the audience now supporting Tyler Perry’s films.
^^Spike and Tyler Perry’s audiences are not the same
Hello, Spike Lee was never anywhere near Driving Miss Daisy. A gem of a movie, which just isn’t his schtick. It was directed by Bruce Beresford.
Spike’s schtick would have been great in the sixties. Now it’s just a pathetic cry for attention.
I’m on Team Eastwood!
I don’t do “Spike Lee.” I refuse to spend my hard earned money on Miracle at St. Anna or any other film he directs or produces. I personally enjoy boycotting Hollywood types who use their celebrity as a soapbox to spew their political diatribe. My wallet is my free speech.
Hey, Spike, why don’t you put all the nervous energy you waste on feuding like some D-lister on a bad reality show and start proving that When The Levees Broke was a real return to form, rather than a fluke?
What we have here, ladies and gentleman are a bunch of grumpy, boring old men whose egos are bigger than their movies.
Spike is the ‘Kayne West’ of the movie world.
Eastwood is the ‘John Wayne’ of our times with his lame productions.
Apatow is the ‘Jason Friedberg’ of Hollywood with his ‘same-old-trick in the bag’ movies.
They 3 should just be ‘Better Best Forgotten’!!
What we need is more directors like Spielberg, Nolan, Ratner, the Coen Brothers, Singer, Zemeckis, Demme, Peter Jackson, Brad Bird, Zack Snyder ..etc
Nuff said!
I agree totally with Spike. Judd Apatow is a LOUSY director. I’ve seen better film in my dishwater.
And given how much of an impact Lee’s had on the industry he SHOULD be counted among the greats. Here we are, in 2008 and nobody’s ever thought to have a theatrical release for a movie about the black WWII soldiers. Eastwood did two movies, but decided to essentially lionize Imperial Japan before he even considered giving a long overdue recognition to black Americans.
Lee should have statues built in his honor.
A good site, good short contents of the good work. Congratulations !,
Greetings! and test of guestbook, coming up here to show love to the site.,
Spike almost got it right, and Clint almost got it right. There were black marines throughout the entire pacific war. Many died and some even won medals! A little research would not hurt guys, it helps if you do your homework. I like both of you a lot, next time do it right.
