After busting the GOP president candidate for lying last night, David Letterman opened The Late Show tonight saying this about John McCain (video here):
“I don’t know if you know about this or not, but last night….Here’s the deal – we do this little TV show every night right here on CBS. And what we do – you see these chairs right here? That’s because we like to have folks come out and visit. And one of the people who was going to visit with us last night was Senator John McCain.
“What a tremendous hero. What a great American John McCain is. Unquestionably, as President Clinton said earlier this week, gave almost everything but his life for this country. And a tremendous hero and a tremendous role model…and he was supposed to be on the show. So at the last minute he calls up and says, “Uh…I can’t make it.” And I said, “What is the problem?” And he said, “Well, the economy. The economy is about to crater.”
***
So I’m scared. I’m starting to tremble a little bit because he said, “I’ve got to race back to D.C.” And I thought, holy gosh… And I hung up the phone and I said to the staff that had gathered at my feet – waiting for words of reassurance from me…OK, everything’s fine. Don’t worry about it. The Senator is on his way back to D.C. So not only did he not go back right away, he stopped by to see Katie Couric on his way out. And then ok, we looked at it and we said, “OK, I understand that. That’s news and this is nonsense.”But then after Katie Couric, wham-o, right to the airport? …No. No. No. We found out today that he didn’t really leave until this morning. [Boos from the audience.]
Thank you very much, Ladies and Gentlemen. So what we learned today is that the economy held on long enough – just barely held on long enough for him to get back there.
“Whereas, you can see, 24 hours ago, I felt like a patriot. I felt like I was helping out. I felt like I was doing my part. Part of the cause. Fighting the fight. Not part of the problem, I was part of the solution. I was going to help in my own little way get this economy out of the crater. And now I’m just feeling like an ugly date. That’s what I feel like. I feel like an ugly date. I feel used. I feel cheap. I feel sullied. I feel cratered…”
David Letterman Busts McCain For Lying
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Who cares whether Dave was whiney or not. Here is the Question?
Why did McCain say he had to rush back to Washington? Why couldnt he just say he felt with the economy in the shape its in that he needed to go on one of the national news programs to discuss it. If he had done that – Letterman would have had no way to spin it negatively or get pissed. It would have been the honest truth – but for some reason McCain didnt say that – He said he had to rush back to Washington to save the day. For all the people complaining about Letterman – do you not think if a democaratic candidate had done something similar Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly would be bitching the same way????????
Jessy, take a breath. Giving an interview with CBS’ top journalist about the impending economic issue was far more important than talking with big-headed Davey about anything. McCain chose to give his time to CBS News and then fly to DC to help broker a better deal.
If you and Davey can’t understand the difference than that explains why some turn to Letterman and Leno for the news. Very sad.
Dave was lied to by the man himself in a one on one phone call, that is why he is pissed off and rightly so. McCain could have just said he had more important things to do and it would have been fine. I don’t see why everyone here is making it into a political debate. A man lied and is getting called on it, that is all.
“Savvy” –
Like Joe Kellogg says above, honesty is the issue, not McCain’s fake-news (Letterman vs. CBS News) venue preference.
If you can’t understand the difference, than maybe that explains why you consider Couric a “Top Journalist”
Crystal – I’m sure you know a whiny bitch when you see one out you completely miss the point on this one. When theses candidates do interviews they are completely protected, completely sanitized and the television viewer, every American in sick of it. So having Letterman take the gloves off last night and ask why can’t McCain multi-task, as well as call him out as a liar – that was awesome. A great moment of TV.
Many of you are missing the point. The point is that McCain got caught lying about some super frivolous piddling shit. The fact that he’d lie about some piddling shit like this indicates that he’ll have NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER ABOUT LYING ABOUT SOME SHIT THAT IS NOT PIDDLING.
Doesn’t matter whether he bumped Dave or not. The character point is: McCain lied.
When he didn’t need to. When he was under no pressure. When it was obvious to a blind monkey he’d be found out.
So not only a liar, but a stupid one.
Not the sort of character reference I’m hoping for, from a potential President.
There are an uncomfortably large amount of McCain supporters in this thread. Seriously, people? You’re ok with mr. erratic and mrs. dinosaurs-didn’t-exist hovering around the red button? McCain still calls the asians the G word.
While I appreciate that having a guest drop out at the last minute would irk the hell out of a host (and the show’s booker), Dave going on and on about it like Alec Baldwin goes on and on about his ex-wife isn’t exactly attractive. It just makes him come off like a whiny bitch.
And, Nikki, this is supposed to be a site about what’s going on in Hollywood. How about you quit posting the political shit and concentrate on who’s getting hired and fired huh? That’s a good girl.
Ya know, sweetie, this is Nikki’s blog, so she can pretty much discuss anything she damn well chooses to.
If you have a problem with what is discussed here, how’s about you get your own blog, pay for the bandwidth and set up and old rules you like, hmmm?
I’m just saying.
There is no source for Letterman’s story that McCain said he had to fly right away, other than Letterman himself. As he has demonstrated the last couple of days, he is a far-left liberal in the tank for Obama. That’s fine, he’s not a reporter, but he’s not an objective source either. I don’t believe him on this point at all.
And Jessy, Gervais is a better choice than Justin Timberlake, don’t you think? The Oscars has descended into an awful, sanctimonious bore-fest that almost nobody watches. They could use the laughs.
For those of you saying McCain was right to blow Dave off to go back to work in Washington: You’re absolutely right. Except for the small fact that THAT’S NOT WHAT HE DID. He went first to Katie Couric’s show, then stayed around in NYC the next day to give a speech at the Clinton Global Initiative, and THEN went to DC.
I’m sure he had 10 minutes to spare on Letterman’s couch.
John McCain is a son of a bitch!
Doesn’t he understand how IMPORTANT David Letterman is?
Can we really elect a man who has deceived David Letterman?
This Letterman topic has risen above terrorism and just below the economy on my list of important campaign issues this November!
you gotta love letterman…the best comic of our day!
Screw Letterman, if McCain had come on the show the media would nail him for appearing on a fluff program while the economy teetered on the brink. Sorry real world takes precedence over Letterman. Besides if McCain really wants to use a late night show for campaigning it should be Leno, a much bigger audience.
If Letterman is such a lightweight fluff show, then why did McCain announce his presidential candidacy on Letterman?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/01/AR2007030100270.html
McCain is such a wimp. He’s stupid and senile, he doesn’t know he’s talking about. It’s scary that he might be our president. Barf.
Go, Letterman! I wish more talk show hosts would be more angry like that. I rarely watch late night talk shows cos they suck!
It’s not the fact that he ditched Letterman, it’s the fact that he lied. That’s the real fact. If he had just told him the truth, it would have been different. It could have possibly still be a object of jokes, but not so much of a snub. And Letterman is on the same network. The truth of the matter is, he didn’t rush off to WARshington (as he says it). He went to see Katie Couric, (who is now so mean for interviewing Palin, but okay, when he goes in to fix it), and to the Clinton event…. That’s not “rushing” back to WARshington! Tell him the truth, that with these economic times, it wouldn’t seem good to be on a late night show like this (as Obama did with SNL), don’t lie! That’s the part, to my understanding that got in Letterman’s craw! And to be honest, when he got there for the photo op finally the afternoon of the next day, nothing got solved…as a matter of fact, it got worse. He’s one gimmick after another plain and simple..and he got caught in one of his lies….
The ONLY reason McCain scurried over to Katie Couric was a failed attempt at damage control over Palin’s devastating interview.
Case in point: NOBODY is talking about what McCain actually SAID to Couric. Everyone is focused on Palin’s garbled words and his dissing of Letterman.
Last night on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno,Leno crack some jokes about Letterman and McCain ditching him like he did. Leno had a field day with David. Cuz it was so funny. Next Letterman gets the grill from Bill O’Reilly.
Awwwwwwwwwwww. Is little Davey mad that the Big Bad Republican man wouldn’t come on his whittle tv showey? Come here, Little Davey, let mommy kiss that boo boo and make it better. See? all done!
P.S. Nikki Finke is the reason Americans not living on the two coasts don’t give a shit what Hollywood says. Your ability to lie out of your ass is amazing if you weren’t all such fucking cowards when it comes to protecting your country. Go hide under your bed and pray that Obama wins, Nikki. I’m sure terrorism will magically go away and the economy will magically be revitalized once Your Lord and Savior, The Obama, gets into office.
This isn’t about Letterman vs. Couric, or fluff vs. news. It’s about intregrity. It’s the character issue. John McCain blew it. He got his hand caught in the cookie jar. Now he must do what every right-thinking, patriotic American celebrity would do under similar circumstances: blame the press and enter rehab.
The ONLY question is… why did McCain lie to Dave when he didn’t even have to. He could have just told the truth — that it was more important to go on a news show that night than on a comedy show.
But he didn’t say that. He lied. For no reason.
That’s a hero?
The oldest GOP trick is that when you’re caught in a lie, attack the messenger and diffuse the situation. Unfortunately for McPain, the messenger is David Letterman and he won’t let it go. McCain is a big fat liar and he got caught. It’s not the first time and it’s not going to be the last time. Attack Letterman all you want but it’s not going to change the fact that McCain is a senile old man that not fit to lead a boy scout troup much less a country in crisis.
“Gee, a veteran senator/Washington reformer/Navy pilot/pow vs. a man who has written 2 books about himself. That’s a really tough call.”
No the tough call is finding out what this guy has actually “reformed”. He voted with Bush 95% of the time.
one of these guys is part of the problem, and one, just could be part of the solution. Just the possibility of change gets my vote.
oh and then there’s the VP choice. I’m sorry but she’s dumber than a box of rocks.
Well, er, with all the respect due to Mr McCain if he has some time he can always come to France to fix our economy too…
