Last night, on The Late Show, I think it set a precedent for Dave.

“I think it set a precedent for Dave”
By “precedent” did you mean “low”? ‘Cuz that’s gonna be kinda hard!
There’s supposed to be humor in this? This is pure politics.
FAIL!
Is the an actual clip reel or the trailer for Oliver Stone’s film?
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!1111oenone
That was hillarious.
He’s been on fire lately. The McCain spot was funny as well. Maybe he’s sharper because this will be his last election…?
The only true precedent set for Dave is when Cher called him “An Ass”…
Wow, that wasn’t brutal, that was just stupid on Letterman’s part. Beeping a statement is hardly proof the statement is wrong or turned out to be untrue. Unless you just believe they are untrue in the first place.
Hilarious!!! And look at how he has aged in just eight short years.
I’ll be short and concise:
Fuck Letterman.

I kinda liked it !!
*blinks*
Lot of conservative readers you’ve got Nikki.
Well it gave me a badly needed chuckle at least.
No mystery where Letterman stands on the forthcoming election.
Was hoping he would run through the “accomplishments” of Obama prior to running for president so I could be more informed and relish in the promises of hope and… ahh, f*ck it, it’s lunch time. Peace out!
Hey 40%, you guys still clinging to the idea Bush was great?! Let me know where you’re buying your LSD.
Let’s look at just one point. The idea we are safer. Are you kidding me? Sure, there hasn’t been another terrorist attach on our soil, but the butcher’s bill of us stomping around the mideast spreading our “democracy” is going to take decades to come due.
I just keep thinking the Republican’s on here act like they got their feelings hurt. Who knew they HAD feelings?
It’s funny because it’s all true.
Hey RG:
What world are you living in? Seriously. Let me know how I can get to your delusional reality where people can think everything is fine, a place where the economy is thriving, where the wars are just, and where the country isn’t being robbed by a group of jackals disguised as god-loving politicians. Do you get there with drugs, booze, bad education, and blind faith.
Wake up, you dummy.
I’ll be short and sweet:
Fuck 40% of the viewing public. They are why we have so much reality TV!
Dave’s the greatest!
Fuck Bush.
Signed,
The other 60% of the viewing public.
Wow if the Leno staff sent less time trolling around this site bashing Dave maybe their show would be watchable and worth clipping somewhere….
That is funniest thing I have seen on a late night show in at least a year… The McCain thing really seems to have re-energized those guys!
This is a great example of why Letterman will always be the intelligent viewer’s late night king…
Letterman is getting older and richer and giving less and less of a shit. He’s always been the best on television and always will be. If 60% of the viewing public watches letterman every night then he has by far the most watched show in the history of the world. Letterman never will have the audience that Leno gets because he doesn’t have that broad, sweeping, appeal to everyone humor like Leno. But the creativity and harsh humor he puts out is the most consistent on television.
Dave’s the last real broadcaster on television these days. Did anyone see his interview with Josette Sheeran of the World Food Program last night? Leno’s all tit and boner jokes and couldn’t hold an actual conversation if his life depended on it.
More proof there is no God:
- Bush wins White House
- Leno wins in ratings
- Cubs win World Series
- Dead babies
Round of applause for Letterman! That was damn funny!
I think that the Letterman haters do not have much of anything to stand on. And before I get labeled a wing nut, let me just express the following sentiment. No Obama! No McCain! No Hairplugs Biden! No Hotlips Palin! No Michelle “Webster on Stilts” Obama! No Cindy “Botox Bimbo” McCain! Thank you.
Fantastic!! I could watch that over and over again! Well done, Dave
Sounds like Dave is throwing caution to the wind…and why shouldn’t he? He’s reconciled his place in the late-night ratings “war” and, following the McCain snub, looks like he’s heading down a WTF path.
David Letterman?
Oh, yeah! That guy who used to be funny.
Signed,
The other 60% of the viewing public.
I think McCain’s lie was the last straw for Dave. He’s come out swinging about the idiocy that is this current administration and party. After all, there’s lots of material to choose from!
Lesson to McCain and Republicans: Don’t piss Dave off. He doesn’t forget.
The sad thing is that this piece by Letterman went nowhere near far enough. Any cursory review of the speeches Bush made in the 2000 debates will reveal dozens of disgusting promises that he broke.
1) “I don’t believe that our country should engage in nation-building.” – Texas Governor’s debate in 1998
2) “As a country, we should project strength without arrogance. If we’re an arrogant nation, we’ll be viewed that way, but if we’re a humble nation we’ll be respected.” – Oct 11th, 2000, in a debate against Gore.
3) “I think what we need to do is convince people who live in the lands they live in to build the nations. Maybe I’m missing something here. I mean, we’re going to have kind of a nation building core from America? Absolutely not. Our military is meant to fight and win war. That’s what it’s meant to do. And when it gets overextended, morale drops.” — Oct 11, 2000 versus Gore
4) “I think both (Gore) and I care a lot about the environment.” – Oct 11th, 2000
5) “I don’t believe, like the vice president does, in huge government. I believe in limited government. By having a limited government and a focused government, we can send some of the money back to the people who pay the bills.” – Oct 11, 2000
6) “I’ll lower the price of oil.” – June 2000
7) “I’m a uniter, not a divider.”
It goes on, and on, and on…..
Letterman used to be funny. Now he’s just ignorant and repetitive.
I can understand if republicans think this might be a low blow, but I guess the truth hurts.
I’d respect Republicans more if they just up and admitted, “Hey, we thought the guy would work out, and it ended up a disaster, I’m still a Republican and I still hold fast to the core ideals of the Republican party, it just seems they’ve been distorted over the last eight years…but, I look forward to the emergence of a strong Republican candidate who follows the principles I hold dear, perhaps in the next election…until then, I hope we can all come together and help this country to get back on its feet.”
The problem is, most of the Republicans (conservatives) I hear or read tend to just lash out with insulting, acerbic rhetoric that doesn’t do anything but pull this country further apart. Too bad.
Bill Maher said it great on The Daily Show last night. Parts of America offer this cool, progressive, European kind of country to live in. But it can’t be fully born or get off the ground because of the redneck part of America.
Some of the pro-Bush comments on here are proof that this other-America, the cool one a lot of us would love to live in, will never exist. Thanks, Rednecks and Bush, for putting a stop to our nation’s evolution and making us a global laughing stock.
Get ‘em Dave. That fuck-wit Bush deserves MUCH worse than that.
Wow. It’s like The Daily Show, only without the actual jokes.
I predict David Letterman will see a temporary bump in the ratings as folks turn in to find out “what’s Dave gonna say next?” but he will end up losing audience after the election (regardless of who wins) and he has probably already lost the “casual” viewer who turns in at bedtime to watch the clown make him or her laugh before going to sleep. A sizeable chunk of his audience isn’t going to want to watch programming that gets its blood boiling when they are trying to drift off to sleep.
I don’t think for a minute that David Letterman cares what people think anyway. I think he’s tired of the daily grind and would just as soon retire.
Anytime someone tells the truth, Republicans are in serious trouble, that’s why they make a habit of shooting the messenger.
No matter what you think of whichever politician being bashed, don’t these celebs know better than to basically kick half their fan base in the face by this bashing?
I know I refuse to see certain actors’ films or shows now that they’ve run their mouths off (and come across as ignorant in the process).
This Letterman thing wasn’t even funny. In fact, the guy hasn’t been funny in a very long time. He’s just cranky.
I think it was one of the SNL writers that coined the term … clapter. Noted that Letterman isn’t really funny but his audience is polite so the result to most of Dave’s bits is .. Clapter. A few chuckles that turns to just applause.
Lordy I miss the Dave of old.
This is just ol Dave’s producers trying very late in the game to catch up to what The Daily Show has been doing very well, thank you, for the last decade or so….
It made me LAUGH! Proof POSITIVE- ALL politician’s LIE!
Johnny Carson must be spinning in his grave. Letterman is the antithesis of Carson, Merv and Mike Douglas, yet he wants us all to believe that Johnny was his mentor. Dave wanted the ‘Tonight Show’ because he felt it was due him and him alone. Instead, he has morphed into an old, bitter, unfunny poop thrower, something Jay Leno left behind long ago.
As time wears on, and CBS is stuck with this left-wing goon, Jay’s new digs at ABC or Fox will be #1. Conan will be #2 and Kimmel #3. And old Dave – it won’t matter.
Letterman’s still got it. I am proud of him and think Johnny Carson would be too. The sad thing is that the bit only stated the obvious. The sadder thing is that some of you out there find that offensive. The truth hurts, doesn’t it?
I wonder when Letterman is going to joke about Barney Frank and the democrats who did everything to stop anyone from fixing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac over the last 8 years Or Joe Bidens son the lobbyist who got daddy to vote his way on the bankruptcy bill. Or all the Millionare Fannie Mac and Freddie Mac people on Obamas campaign. Leftwingers seem to be mean nasty people towards anyone who disagrees with them.
Hollywood is blacklisting conservatives in Hollywood.
when Leftist stars like Matt Damion make stupid remarks
its ignored –I don’t watch Letterman anymore because he is a bitter unfunny man. The people who say he is
funny are people who just agree with his mean spirited political jokes its not humor its hate. The moderator of the Debate tomorrow has a book coming out talking about how great Obama is…Would the media let the debate be
run by someone who wrote a book saying how great McCain is?–NO
People are starting to see how biased the major networks are. Not that it will ever change.
If anyone wants to see why the last 30 years of American politics has been so horribly divisive, see the new documentary “Boogeyman” about how Lee Atwater and his protegee Karl Rove sold their souls by stirring every ugly pot we have to turn us against each other . It’s an eyeful and there are more Republicans talking to the camera than journalists and Democrats. It’s a must see for anyone who wonders just how we sunk to where we are now.
If the Republicans would have spent half as much venom checking their own party’s actions instead of getting ripped up over crap like this that doesn’t really matter, maybe this country wouldn’t be so screwed up.
You reap what you sow.
oh please…
if bush has aged, letterman is ready for the cremation incinerator and an urn on top of Devil’s Tower mountain summit in Montana. Really nothing to see here that we dont already know. dave is just pissed that a republican used him as a departing-from-nyc foot mat. really.
bush is hardly a president who i would defend from criticism so fire away, but he is in big company with a whole lot of other presidents who have sucked since World War II, including FDR, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush 1&2 and Clinton. …and lets not forget Harding and Hoover.
o fkin well
Bush sucks, the Republican party sucks, and if you want confirmation of both of these indisputable FACTS please watch TV on 11/4/08. Thank you and goodbye.

Hey Jane,
Have you looked at a mirror lately?
The reflection will show you as the hater. Hating Peace (Iraq) Hating the Earth (drilling in the wildlife preserves) Politics (Do you really want a moose shooting hockey mom with a B.A from U. of Idaho being a heartbeat from the Presidency? Do you? really?
It sounds like a really bad Disney film to me. Let’s not make it a reality.
Also… can you really argue the facts that underlie Letterman’s sketch. You’d have to spin yourself dizzy with delusionto do it.
Don’t make fun of obama because all of america will come down on you. How does anyone blame bush for the wall street crash.
SUB PRIME
everyone gets a house, doesn’t matter if they can pay for it or not
we are fucked
What did you Americans see in him anyway? He doesn’t seem like much of a speaker.
It’s like he’s barely managing to read from the teleprompter or something!
He wasn’t even that charismatic or sharp when he went on Letterman’s show way back.
Guess it must be his policies…
I predict that McCain and Palin are going to win…
David Letterman: A Poor Man’s Keith Olbermann.
How can you people not see what a terrible president he has been? What’s really funny is how clueless the average American is!
This republican regime is NOT republican in principle. They just borrowed the label.
Whatever happened to the real republicans in government?
Meh. Bush is gone in, what, three months? Defending him and Attacking him are kind of a wasted effort…
Jdog, that is typically snide and ignorant to quote Bush PRE-9/11. When the facts change, sometimes your opinions change too. Dems always accuse the GOP of ignoring facts and reality, but do you really think we should have gone on just like it was before the attacks?
Really, I can’t imagine why his views on nation-building and international affairs might have changed only one year after the debates. What a liar!
Even as a democrat (well, more of a centrist actually), I found that segment rather humorless. Not to say that any of it was false, but it sure as heck wasn’t funny. Seriously, Bush bashing? That takes absolutely no comedic effort whatsoever.
Dave’s brand of humor is rather pedestrian these days, I’ll admit. That happens during an election season on all of the late night shows. Ya know, pander to the common man while there’s a topic everyone’s aware of. But at least he’s not trotting out his Cousin Mel or Uncle Hank every three minutes. Jimmy Kimmel Live BLOWS MAJOR DONKEY DICK and I can’t help but wonder how ABC doesn’t see it! The ratings have sucked since day one, he’s unbelievably replaceable by thousands of funnier, more engaging people and he looks like one of those 28 Days Later ghouls. Please yank this guy and get some fresh, funny blood in there. The experiment failed!!!
It is because of his overtly involvement in Iraq and foreign policies that he forgot to peek at his own backyard failing to see the cookie was crumbling
He will be forever remembered as the President who exited Whitehouse and left the Americans with a big pile of mess. Iraq is still in disaray and the economy could have never been any worst and best of all, he executed the wrong guy, Saddam who had nothing to do with 9/11. Osama is still at large and he is still running the Qaeda, more longer than Bush could have ever hope for to lead the Americans.
I am glad Congress rejected the bail-out plan. Why should we pay the rich shareholders and bankers for their losses, more so for their greed and stupidity?
Bush! You are an embarrasement to yr father and to the Americans.
Political Humor is an oxymoron to me.
A nitwit running a country can cause people to go broke… can cause people to die… can cause problems in general for its population… misery, strife, social unrest…. wide-open borders… lots of crime and other stuff that’s not funny. The fact that an idiot can run a country depresses me. This country really could be a cool place but it’s not.
I used to like Dave back in the 80s when he was an escape from all the other humor on TV, but now he’s doing the same kind of stuff everyone else does. Even though he does it better than anyone, I do miss the days of Flunkie The Clown and The Peace Through Dramatization Players.
I wouldn’t find it funny either if I voted for Bush and was reminded how wrong I was in selecting such a terrible disappointment.
Dave is funnier than his haters.
This was beautiful. Thank you David Letterman. Too bad this fun with video is reality and not a joke.
Letterman reminds me of the bitter, old neighborhood grouch who yells at anyone who walks on his lawn. This is the same kind of thing he did towards Oprah Winfrey–and he pounded that into the ground too. The election is in a month–whomever wins–good luck to you–but stay the Hell out of Letterman’s way–after all , in his mind he is God.
Letterman needs to retire, what was hip, edgy and irreverent in the 1980s/early 90s is now tired, cliched and irrelevant.
Any U-Tuber could have milked a home made Bush video for more laughs than that.
I agree with Letterman’s piece, but as others have pointed out, it really wasn’t comedy. It was just a political statement. Just what people tune into his show to see, right?
I’m really not impressed by all the idiots getting on the anti-Bush bandwagon now, when he’s over and done. Where were they four or five years ago when the Dixie Chicks were having their lives threatened? They were all in hiding, waiting til it was “safe” to make their worthless little statements.
I didn’t think there were many people left who wouldn’t agree that Bush blew every one of those promises. This was mild in comparison to the damage this man has done. If you go overseas, (which I have done several times in the last eight years) you would hear some ear-curling, scathing words about Bush and those who put him in office. We would be a laughing-stock everywhere except that its just not funny.
Johnny Carson would be incredibly proud of Dave for this & so many other hits he’s shot at Bush!
In case you forget, Carson said after the 1968 election he was for Humphrey & was extremely disappointed that Nixon won.
As for lu-ee, I had no idea that FDR, Coolidge & Hoover were presidents after WWII, which is what you wrote.
No wonder you voted for & continue to support the stupidest & worst president of all time – You’re a moron!
Why is the Bush-bashing crowd here so irate about the Bush-defending crowd?
Gauging any man’s presidency is an enormously complex thing, especially when much of his policy has yet to play out completely. “Truth”, feh. It is at this point simply a matter of opinion driven largely by fundamental assumptions about the world.
For someone to be so angry at a challenge to their thinly-supported opinion, particularly one informed almost exclusively by the one-liners of late night comedians, cable-news talking heads and old-media propaganda rags seems incongruous.
Spend less time watching Letterman and more time thinking critically about who influences you, how they do it, and why they might be doing it. You might be surprised to find that you are being manipulated at every turn.
Obama as POTUS would make George W Bush look like Abraham Lincoln.
The last thing America needs right now is another rookie in the White House.
Bush never was president, his body is a Cheney string puppet. Letterman is the messenger.
I love how all the conservatives are bashing Letterman yet can not defend Bush in any way.
everything Letterman says in this video is true…call Dave what you like but you can’t hide the truth…..however it is so Republican to attack the messenger instead of the message.
I hope obama taxes letterman into an early grave
wow, 100% accurate. My dog could have been a better POTUS.
Letterman knows. This is the dawning of the age of aquarius…..Nirvana will soon arrive in the USA after the coronation of Barack and Michele (sorry, but Biden is really irrelevant in their royal court). All will b e positive in the next 4 years after the Obama win. Watch how quickly the economy will become good news again and relationships with other countries will be so much improved…media spin will be interesting if we do get attacked on our soil again. I am sure that will be Bush’s fault, too. Oh, boy, pass the marijuana, I need to get on this bandwagon and enjoy falling down the rabbit hole to join this fiction. God Bless America!
I watch Letterman most nights and see no comments about Obama. That’s the problem, if you go after Bush or McCain that’s easy. But to go after Obama is racist. Guess what people, this lifelong Democrat is not going to vote for Obama. Keep talking Dave.
Do you know what I’ll find funny, guys. When the truth about Obama comes out and Letterman and the Media can’t hide it anymore. THAT will be hilarious!
why is it that these morons on televison seem to think that this is entertainment? One of the people said “don’t piss off Dave”…What? Who cares what Dave thinks…the idiot has made a gizillion dollars from “entertainment” and he’s gotten lost in his self importance. He’s become sad, bitter, hatefull and real rich. How mush has Dave given to charity? Does his accountant look for every possible tax break availabble? What makes Dave differenct than the rest of the rich? Nothing. He’s an idiot who’s lost his touch.
Don’t bother complaining to CBS or any of the nets in the leftstream media; contact the companies that advertise on these shows – they all have web sites – and tell them you are going to take your business elsewhere. And make sure you contact their marketing and advertising dept and their investor relations dept.
Democrats did this, for the children:

Most people don’t realize that most of the employees in the media and entertainment industry belong to unions. Hence, their far left philosophy, bias and affinity for Marxist, totalitarian programs and projects. Seen any pro-business movies lately……?
Where are all the class acts, like Carson, when you need them?
SO… Bush lied?
how is this harsh in the least… this is an observation not an opinion.
Only repubs get upset when their words are rehashed…. too too funny
Oh goodie … Dave’s starting in again tonight on McPain and the beauty queen…
I guess it took John McCain dissing him for Letterman to finally see the light on the Republican administration.
Comment to the one who signed himself “the other 60% of the viewing public.” You need to return to Math 101. 60+ 60=120. Is this how you counted the votes in the last election?
This is Exhibit A for those who believe this country is going to hell in a hand basket.
What qualifies this former weatherman at channel 13 in Indianapolis to spew this nonsense?? (except he has a microphone)
He is in the same category as Stewart, Colbert, Maher, et al. They are simply blatant moronic egotists who, because of the microphone, think of themselves as experts regarding political matters.
Now to the problem: There is a growing segment of our society who are products of our cotton candy educational system who are leftists and marxists. Listen to the rhetoric of Hollywood, drive-by media, old TV network news and newpapers like the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation. It is obvious they hate America.
Add to this mix the huge number of those who do not know the content of the Bill of Rights nor the number of the amendments to the Constitution and you have a fan base of epic proportations for these clowns.
France is running away from socialism as fast as it can because they have found it doesn’t work. When will we ever learn
How dare Letterman point out the obvious for mere humor sake. So the last 8 years have been a disaster, but come-on folks, W. tried his best. The Republicans are realizing the fact that their policies are failed which is why they had to nominate a “Maverick” who will fight his own parties policies. Go Dave, Go.
Never underestimate the stupidity of the average American, including the one presently in the White House.
holy cow you people get fired up easily. this is one persons opinion. one of the things that supposedly makes your country so great is that you are entitled to have an opinion. you should focus your anger toward the people who screwed things up so bad in the first place. i don’t like bush myself, but it takes more than one person to mess things up so bad. he’s just the face on it. keep the faith people. with a country full of strength and determination like i’ve read here, you’ll be fine. just stick together. republican or democrat, you are all AMERICANS first!!! be there for each other. things always get worse before they get better.good luck with the election. our candidates aren’t any better.
WOW ITS AMAZING WE ARE IN THE WORST SHAPE EVERY AS A COUNTRY AN PEOPLE ARE STILL DEFENDING THIS GUY
Many Americans are so silly. Obviously they are going to be offended by Dave, they’re the same people who think Bush is the greatest president to ever live. The same people who turn in to Leno to watch him make penis jokes, and terrible guest interviews.
Obama doesn’t have a chance, an intelligent African Scholar from the North.. forget about it! It’s no time for intelligence, they’d rather have a soccer mom who has displayed no substance and has a plethora of foreign experience. I think people should realize they are voting for the leaders of a country, not the local PTA. If you are going to engage in a capitalism, you must have foreign experience! The entire system is based on open borders and trade, how do you do that with someone from Alaska who couldn’t even point to Canada on a map.
Gee. Those of us in the reality-based world and who stayed awake during the last seven years agree with Letterman and his buzzer !
Bush did almost exactly the opposite of what he promised …
And he and his so-called “National Security Advisor” ignored all of the
warnings and let the attack on 9/11 happen. Bush should have been
impeached a long time ago …
It’s quite amazing that all the anti-Letterman-piece writers here choose to spew venom at people they hate instead of pointing out the specifics in this piece that they believe to be in error.
How did he do? Not well. Then again:
His words made more sense than the stupid buzzer.
No one was proposing better programs or solutions.
No one is maintaining that he is one of the ‘great’ US presidents.
On the other hand, no one is being foolish enough to continue claiming that Al Gore or John Kerry would have done better, a telling comment or lack thereof. Apparently the right choice (and I admit I was foolish enough to at one time prefer Gore) was made.
So, if the Democratic candidates were not a better choice than Bush, what other choice was there? Certainly not the lackluster independent options although Ralph Nader and Ross Perrot have both made more sense than either major party. Similarly, other fringe groups do not have the wealth, backing, and grass roots support to replace either the big business and major financial backing of either major party. It comes down to choosing between the philosophy of the party you wish to support against the one you wish to oppose. For those of us who matured during the Cold War, something like choosing between the restrictive ‘do right’ teachings of our parents and the mainstream educational system and the easy going “Peace, Dude” hippy culture.
Hey, both sides developed some good people, but we know which one we still entrust with our military, educational system, police, and government. Which is what the election is all about, isn’t it? The values that have shaped a country for over two hundred years or left wing liberal bullshit. What we remember of JFK is his ‘Bush-like’ toughness with Cuba and Khrushev. What we remember of LBJ is disaster in southeast Asia. It didn’t work under nice guy Jimmy Carter. It didn’t work under lying crook Bill Clinton. And Barack Huessien Obama? Is anyone noticing a downward trend here? Yes, change is needed. Primarily change away from Obama and Democratic Party policies and failures.
God save us from the Republicans. If the liberal left will even allow Him in the country.
Does anyone remember the President can do NOTHING without the approval of Congress… Why is it Congress isn’t taking the blame for any of this hugh mess we’re in… geeze!!!
p.s. Letterman is an idiot!!!
Never been a letterman fan. But I will say this to 40%
of the veiwing public: Truth hurts don’t it?
Time for you people to grow up.
