Weinstein Company Blames Mystery Man For Spreading “False” Writedown Rumor
I just heard the buzz in film financing circles that The Weinstein Company had to writedown $50 million of Goldman Sachs’ money this week. It’s reportedly taking the loss because of those four films it dumped into next year, Crossing Over, Killshot, Fanboys and Shanghai, plus The Road… (And let’s face it: who in their right mind thinks even one of those pics is going to make a dime of profit in 2009?) So Harvey will just sit tight between this weekend’s Zack And Miri from Kevin Smith (ugh, the ads look terrible ), and The Reader at the end of December, hoping — more like praying — that Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 Inglorious Bastards (domestic/TWC, international/Universal) can break TWC’s box office drought. Can Goldman Sachs afford to wait? (Full Disclosure: I own 27 shares of Goldman Sachs stock.)
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Nikki , you got it all Harv does now is produce DREK !!!
The Road will make money.
Crossing Over MIGHT do decent biz.
Fanboys will come and go…but it’ll be HUGE on DVD.
Killshot will probably end up getting an extremely limited theatrical release and then hit DVD; it’s been completed and on the shelf for years now…
Shanghai might make some coin…might…
Zack and Mirri will be their first blockbuster, though. Rogen can’t be stopped.
The Reader, assuming it’s great, will do solid biz along the art-house circuit and then will clean up on DVD.
It’s about time that someone noticed that Harvey Weinstein’s business model of not releasing movies, is not how you run a movie company.
How many times have you heard about some independent film getting good notices or even awards at a major film festival, it’s bought by the Weinstein Co. and then it completely disappears, sometimes for years, only to appear in a token release long after any interest is dead and buried?
I’m expecting legal action against the Weinstein Co. by the people who make these films, as well as their investors wanting some kind of a chance to make their money back.
I imagine The Weinstein Co’s financials to be the very definition of mind boggling.
Killshot was made over two years ago and has been collecting dust on a shelf every since. I can scarcely see Harry’s logic in aquiring Asian language films and let tham rot without distribution, but why a $50m + commercial product?
If Harry can sell such rampant financial mismanagement to investors who willingly hand him money may I suggest Mr Weinstein gets his next round of financing by selling Brooklyn Bridge.
People like Zak and Miri. Watch it win the time slot
Z&M will make money this weekend, no doubt. I’d put it in the 16-20m mark.
The Road will do fine. Remember, it’s in the Oprah Book Club.
Nikki,
You are right on the dime here with this. Although I heard more than 50 million. These guys are going to have a hard time making payroll soon. They are using frequent flier miles earned from the exec’s AMEX cards to pay for flights for talent!! They completely blew San Sebastian by not being able to afford to send ANYONE of any weight there. Rumor has it that San Sebastian doesn’t want to see their ugly faces at their festival in the future. I got a look at the galley for the new Harvey book and MY GAWD! This sucker goes into detail you should only imagine…. Without their international, they’re cooked. Say bye bye to Genius DVD, they should have called it Arrogant Money Wasting Pricks DVD. Go kiss Quentin’s ass and embrace every piece of shit Asian movie ever made. The guy has some talent but the house that Quentin built is the house that he is going to destroy. Don’t bet the bank on BASTERDS. And whoever thinks Zack and Miri-Max will be profitable is insane or has no knowledge of the distribution business. It’s a LOSER and is tracking poorly.
Bye bye fatty.
“People like Zak and Miri. Watch it win the time slot”
Okay, I know there are a lot of uniformed people commenting on DHD these days, but that sets a new standard. Hilarious!
“Crossing Over, Killshot, Fanboys and Shanghai, plus The Road”
I’d almost describe those movies as a list of box office roadkill, but roadkill is large enough to see.
Instead, those movies are more like the insects that get squished in a car’s grille. They’re not even going to make it to the windshield.
You are SO biased.
KILLSHOT is based on an Elmore Leonard novel and stars Thomas Jane.
If Harvey can’t market that movie it’s time for him to go.
It is entitled “Zack and Mirri make a Porno” and it is supposed to make big money? Now I wouldn’t be surprised if Zack and Mirri bombs despite it being promoted by USA Networks, WWE, and NBC. In fact, the movie had a preview after last night’s round of
sportsentertainment went off the air.Full Disclosure, the WWE, through Vince McMahon is trying to change its image following new rules from the state of Georgia saying that Wrestling is a sport that must be insured. As a result, wrestlers will be known as entertainers and sports entertainment will be known as entertainment only. Be sure to check out the link in my name.
BTW Nikki, you might want to sell that Goldman Sachs stock if Harvey Weinstein has to take a massive writedown due to GS.
Wasn’t KILL SHOT made, like, five years ago? I’ve seen the trailer for that Diane Lane thing attached to movies on DVD for about three years now. It’s not likely to make a lot of money but it’s got a good cast and it’s an Elmore Leonard adaptation so I’m interested in seeing it.
Meanwhile, do you have any idea what THE ROAD is, Nikki? Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts, zombies, Cormac McCarthy adaptation. Hello? I’m sure it’ll do well and turn a profit if the budget wasn’t too big.
Actually, I’ve been looking forward to 3 of those films.
The Road has the potential to be something really interesting (if it’s R, which I believe it is).
The trailer for Killshot didn’t look half bad. It’s got Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke and Tom Jane…I’d at least watch the DVD.
I’m also an outspoken WAYNE KRAMER apologist. I mean, anyone who can follow up THE COOLER with RUNNING SCARED has got to be on to something. Not to mention his ludicrously entertaining script for Mindhunters. He’s apparently doing 2 more films in the vein of running scared and shooting them back-to-back this winter. I cannot wait.
Diane Lane who stars in “Killshot” actually quit showbiz altogether over that films woes!
Is Nick from 1998? “It will Kill on DVD”… newsflash…the DVD business is near dead. All micro and mid distribution has failed because of that and pre-buys / indy movie cos have closed because dvds have dropped almost 60%.
The Bros W are opening Miri on Halloween weekend w/ 3,000 theatres when Halloween is on a Friday.
On top of that kids under 17 are going to be buying tix to the pg-13 movie and sneaking into Zack & Miri.
I can’t imagine that Rogen and K. Smith (as well as Banks) didn’t get paid WAY above their quotes on this one either.
don’t know where you get your info from, SeanH.
DVD is still one of the major ways that movies make profit. How can you not know this?
