Between 4:47 P and 10:04 AM, the leaderboard changed. Does anything stop a distributor from ordering a slug of tickets, then pushing them back to theatres to sell to the incoming customers? That could pump up the advance ‘buzz’ and not really cost anything, since the advance purchase price and the door price are the same or nearly so.
That Twilight isn’t number 1 surprises – and amuses – me to no end.
@ Thomason:
Same principle applies in the music biz. “WoW! The new (whatever name) CD just dropped, and it’s already platinum!” Then all the unsold inventory is shipped back to the label. Ahh, showbiz!
Toldja!
That’s more like it. James Bond ain’t gonna take shit from a bunch of pansy vampires.
@ Thomason, Mr. Music, Armand…
First, buying online is more expensive than buying at the box office. Second (and more importantly) exhibitors would have NO BENEFIT in participating and there are strict policies at the major exhibitors forbidding the reselling of tickets.
Sure. BO can be slightly manipulated when film opens on a few screens – where filmmakers buy tickets in bulk in a lame attempt to increase the per-screen and generate a buzz on BO tracking reports but the scale you are talking about simply just can’t (and doesn’t) happen. The risk is too great for BOTH parties and the NEED just isn’t there.
The simple fact is that many theatres are now able to start selling advance tickets for Bond and Twilight now that they’ve verified bookings. Further marketing efforts are in full swing to encourage pre-sale so
it stands to reason that there will be spikes for each film’s pre-sale activity.
There is no vast evil corporate conspiracy – go peddle your paranoid fantasies elsewhere. In the meantime misguided Bond/Twilight fans will start debating an issue that has little relevance – both films will be successful and in many respects court different audiences so what’s the big deal anyway…
