When your soundtrack isn’t even completed much less released (not until November 4th), yet it’s already in the Top 5 Best-Selling Albums on Amazon based on pre-sales alone, you know you have a hit. When Borders makes an exclusive calendar and sells out the first printing in a matter of days, you know you have a hit. And when the new trailer to your movie surpasses 3.5 million views less than 48 hours after its online debut, you know you have a hit. Which is why Summit Entertainment’s CEO Rob Friedman is already readying a Twilight sequel — even though the vampire tween/tween movie isn’t set for release until November 21st which is the date vacated by Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince. Oh, and did I mention that Twilight has the fastest selling licensed merchandise since — you guessed it — Harry Potter?
But the comparison with Harry Potter ends at cost: Twilight came in at only a $37 million negative cost. This notion of a low-cost blockbuster for a start-up studio just doesn’t happen often in the film biz. So if the movie lives up to the advance hype, Summit will be sitting on a big new franchise. How big? Well, the new Twilight trailer played with Quarantine this weekend and as soon as the title came up, a chorus of high-pitched screams of joy emanated from the women in the audience in one Southern California theater. Only to be properly drowned out by a loud chorus of male boos. It’s conventional wisdom that boys won’t go because there’s not enough gory fang action. But Summit is also marketing to an online contingent called Twilight Moms because of the chaste love story set in the picturesque locale of Oregon and directed by thirteen‘s Catherine Hardwicke. Still, I think Summit is lowballing by hoping for a $20M North American opening weekend from 3,500+ venues.
Like Potter, Twilight has a built-in audience of book fans with, a total 7.5 million domestic sales for all four Stephanie Meyer novels in the series which was a New York Times #1 bestseller for 59 weeks. Not to mention big sales overseas like Italy, Germany and the UK. That’s one reason Twilight is opening day and date in 10 territories, including the U.S.
Summit may spend in the high $30sM for P&A. That’s a bargain consider skyrocketing marketing costs in the movie biz. That’s because indies these days must spend more efficiently than studios by not just attracting long lines at Comic-Con but almost solely relying on My Space and other social networks instead of costly TV ads. Look, for example, at how Summit rolled out the new trailer. First, Nancy Kirkpatrick (one of the best in the biz) heightened fan anticipation by creating a countdown clock to the widget. Then came the trailer’s free debut on Entertainment Tonight. That night, Summit gave fans a special opportunity to see it online first as a way of thanking them for their support. The trailer was streamed through Twilight’s widget from 8 PM to 9 PM for fans, then debuted for the general audience in HD on MySpace Trailer Park at 9 PM. The result: 2 million views in the first 24 hours on MySpace alone and 3.5 million views in cyberspace within the first 48 hours.

i don’t think anyone other than 14yr old girls want to see this…
I suppose its not the first time so much money and effort has been wasted on such horrendous writing.
I myself being a man have no problem admitting I like the Twilight series though I loathed myself a little due to it being aimed at a younger audience. That movie is going to make such a profit it’s not even funny.
20 million…no way. It will have a HUGE opening.
I am not in the movie biz, but there are 6-10 people in my office alone who want the day off to go to an early matinee. They each know 1-2 other people who want to see it then also.
We are all 21-35…so that is not even counting the tweens and teens that will overflow the theatres.
I’m curious to see how the movie does, given a lot of fans’ reaction to the characterizations in the last book and its no-longer-chaste content.
But then, I’m amazed at the fan passion for the series. I picked up the first book on the recommendation of a friend and was so bored I barely finished it. I see a lot of movies, especially genre ones, but I’ll definitely skip this one in the theaters rather put up with squealing tweens.
It’s going to be huge. People who have never read the book are underestimating the fandom.
I’m a 37 yr old mom and I know other 30 something friends who love the books/series and are dying to see the movie. So for it to open in the 20 million is an understatement…it’s going to be huge!
Not to pick (and I don’t know where the movie was shot) but it is SET in a locale in Washington, not Oregon — namely, Forks, a small town on the Olympic Peninsula, which is currently seeing a huge TWILIGHT-related tourist boom.
I am a huge Twilight Series fan and I am 22. I am not ashamed to say it and I am very excited that they have decided to Pick up New Moon for production! I think this will be a very popular and great franchise, like it isn’t already, and these actors can show even more of their wonderful talent.
The only thing I ask is that they please keep the original cast. I absolutely hate it when the switch the cast members! I personally know some of the actors who will be staying so I hope they don’t change anyone because that will be a major disappointment.
We need another book series to take over for POTTER & CO. This must be at least a $30M opener. I’m somewhat curious but it looks alittle dull. But pretty young vampires doing vampire things seems to be the rule of the day (whether they suck blood or not).
After reading your entry, I watched both teaser trailers. It looks like something the Sci-Fi Channel would run on a Sunday afternoon! At least it’s nice to see the Pacific NW being used as a backdrop, but that’s about it.
I don’t believe that it is simply 14 yr old girls that want to see these movies. I am 20 and in a book club that consists of girls 18-40 that are in love with the book. My boyfriend even loves the books… so it won’t bee just teeny boppers there…
I can’t wait for this to come out! I’m 19 and i’ve loved this book series since twilight came out! My boyfriend is a fan of the series too so atleast one boy will be seeing it : )
I’m 20 as well, and I enjoy the books. Though they are not the greatest fiction, they are addicting and fun read. I’m very excited for the films, and i find it hilarious that Summit is low-balling it for 20 mil. Lowest I can see would be 50 million, and with the budget 37 mil, of course they would go to the next sequel.
I do admit though, Summit needs to get some of these previews on the Television, there are still many whom have not heard of this film as of yet, So we’ll just have to see.
But I know there is a fan base, I was astonished when I saw a 40 woman on transit reading it, it proved to me that this film could be bigger than I thought.
I’d like to say I recently dealt with a small management company called THE MAK COMPANY. I believe this is a future powerhouse. They treated me, a no name writer with dignity. Just wanted to give them a shout out.
Im a 32 yo mum of 4 kids and married for 12
I LOVE TWILIGHT and am sooooo excited to see this film and cant wait for the next film…
I BOW TO CATHRINE H she is a legond
I am in my thirties and I am a big fan of the books and really looking forward to the movie.
I have passed the books along to some of my friends in my age group and everybody have loved them. As far as the audience for the movie goes, I believe it will be definitely mostly female but it will include every single age group.
I´m 27 and i´ll to see Twilight at least 5 times ^^
This will likely be a profitable (here defined simply as grosses exceeding production and P&A costs – not participation agreement profitable) film, but no one should confuse this with a giant B.O. winner.
It smells like a “Hulk”-type of performance in regards to audience attrition. If it’s 2nd weekend loses less than 65% of the first, I will be surprised.
Well, I’m 31, and yes, if it wasn’t opening on Black Friday I would be at the midnight showing. Just because these books are aimed at tees, doesn’t mean the “rest of us” do not completely enjoy them. For some of us trapped in our day to day lives, these books were an escape into an alternate reality. For many women my age, these books have even brought a new spark into their marriages, and if you don’t believe me, go look it up yourself. There are several websites dedicated to these books set up by women my age and older, including my own Myspace site. There are plenty of movies out there that I won’t go see this year, and I’m sure to some people, those movies are what they have been waiting to see. My point is, one needs to give everything a chance, and not judge a book by it’s cover, a movie by it’s trailer, or an alternate reality by a large portion of it’s fan base. I also read the Harry Potter books and found them fascinating as well. You people that think this is just something that only teenagers will like also need to consider something else–7.5 million copies of these books sold means a lot of kids are off the streets and reading again, and as a mother I am going to support that ideal as best I can.
Everyone in the fandom knows that there are people who are not into Twilight and would not even consider maybe reading the book or watching the movie first before making any comments but like almost all Twilighters, people are underestimating the fandom.
Im a 30 yr old mom and I loved the books. And will love the movie. Hope they will make all the books into movies. To those who are so decisively against Twilight, here’s an word of advice:”Stop posting! No one wants to hear your whining…”
I have never read Twilight, but I will go see the movie just to get the taste of the dreck that is TRUE BLOOD out of my mouth. ANY Vampire story would be superior to that crap.
And I hope TWILIGHT will be done with some class and smarts, two things TB is missing as well.
On one hand I’m thrilled. For a start up like Summit to have such a potential franchise smash hit on their hands of this size (something a post Lord Of The Rings New Line never managed) less than a year after they opened their doors is incredible.
I really hope that Summit can build on the success that Twilight brings them. Now, more than ever, we need another place for people to take their work.
And with New Line Cinema reduced to nothing more than a filing cabinet in some itnerns cubicle at Warners Summit are perfectly positioned to be the edgy, interesting place that New Line once was all those years ago.
On the other hand… this film looks hideous. From the trailers it looks like some cheap Toronto shot pilot that The CW passed on.
I realise that this isn’t a film aimed at me (a man in his 30′s) but even still.
Blargh.
This is going to be absolutely huge, especially due to the repeat viewing appeal it has to the huge obsessive fanbase.
Although, they should make it a trilogy – the fourth book was awful and would make a terrible film.
