United Talent’s Jeremy Zimmer just signed away Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, writer/director of the 2007 Best Foreign Language Oscar winning The Lives Of Others (aka Germany’s Das Leben der Anderen released in 2006), from CAA’s Beth Swofford. (He’d been initially signed by CAA’s Tory Metzger who left in May for MRC.) “Florian woke up realizing he’d been at CAA two years, and nothing had really happened. He didn’t feel he had made any progress. So to focus in on things he wanted to do, he made a change to get moving with what his agenda is,” a UTA insider told me.
Also this week, Best Actor Oscar winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins left CAA for Endeavor. Hopkins had been a Rick Nicita client, but after Rick’s departure from the agency, Kevin Huvane couldn’t keep the actor. Though his big Hannibal Lecter paydays may be behind him, Hopkins is still a sought-after client and had been at William Morris and ICM before CAA.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Florian is a big pickup. “Lives” was a masterpiece and he’s a young guy. I think he has a very, very bright future.
and Pauly Shore is going to WMA. irv weintraud enginereed it
SOLID pick up for UTA. So to all the haters, UTA is going to rise to the top again. Good for them.
Zimmer will lose his patience with Florian before he stuffs his face with leftovers tomorrow, and pass his off to Jeremy Barber< probably. If so, the guy has a chance.
Do agencies actually serve any purpose? Seriously, how many decent films have Hopkins starred in recently? And they did “nothing” for Florian for “two years”? Considering the recycled crap Hollywood’s made in the last decade, I hope something comes along and rips it to shreds, the way the internet’s tearing up record companies and newspapers.
anyone see Elle magazine profile on most powerful women in hollywood? It had Beth Swofford and a story on how she signed Florian. Too bad it didn’t mention that she did NOTHING for him.
And Matt, yes, agencies actually do serve a purpose. Judging from your comments, it sounds as if Aunt Betty’s Talent Barn in the valley won’t sign you.
hahahahahah—
CAA is worthless unless you are name is steven or tom
they dont serve their clients internally or externally with projects or offers for projects
in fact CAA and ICM are the worst places to go to trying to get talent
Endeavor is semi-approachable and better than them. william morris and has no choice to be open to things
but CAA–f**k you again for making a lot of people’s lives miserable by promising and never delivering–
LOL!!!
Beth Swofford cares more about her shoes than most of her clients.
Good for Jeremy. He takes a lot of flack in your column. Much of it is a result of his past. He is still one of the all time great agents even though Dan Aloni and Nick Stevens hate him and spend much of their time trying to spread rumors about him and UTA. Jeremy, while not perfect, actually stood up to their bad behavior unlike others in the industry. He has also spent a lot of time making himself a better person. I hope he continues on and does well..
TOP 10 REASON AGENCIES ARE THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.
10. They care more about themselves than their clients.
9. They’d rather steal clients than nurture careers.
8. Ari Emanuel.
7. They lie, cheat steal and would fuck their mothers and sell tickets if it would get them a big bonus or a big client.
6. They are talentless losers whose only way into a creative business is being a scumbag agent.
5. They allow their clients to be spineless, cowards who hide behind the lies and dirt of their representatives.
4. They condone destructive behavior and add cost to movie and TV budgets all in the name of lining their pockets.
3. They help a system which blocks women, blacks and others from equality in the business.
2. They perpetuate the shitty mediocrity of product that prevails in the industry.
1. They are the embodiment of the true face of Hollywood, a collection of sick, twisted, broken and disturbed humanity whose only outlet is creative expression.
Pity the clients at CAA who are neither 7-figure women, big usual male names or “packagable” directors. Long live End, UTA and ICM for finding those talented ignored disgorged from the Metropolis of CAA.
‘The Lives Of Others’ is one of the best films I’ve seen in years. A brilliant piece of work. The fact that this guys hasn’t directed anything since is a serious shame. His agent failed him BIG TIME. I’m dying to see what he does next.
Hey Ghost of Wasserman,
whew! for a second there I though you were making generalizations.
btw. Gathering from your nom de plume, do you really think Wasserman has changed his ways up in that big talent agency in the sky?
GhostofWasserman: Interesting “Top Ten” list about agents, buta how about doing one about their bad side. . .
I had to respond to “Wasserman” post. Agents may be a necessary ‘evil’ but I know and work with many who are genuinely caring people, especially about their clients. I think this stereotype works only for those rotten ones – and believe me, even they in the dark reaches of their own isolated times know this about themselves – and trust me, that sort of rotten behavior crosses ALL vocational lines in Hollywood.
Perhaps Kevin Huvane should spend less time on the dead, dead, dead career of Jennifer Aniston and concentrate on the real actors in his stable.
We have more life that most of her clients.
Beth Swofford is the best!
