On what planet does The Washington Post reside? The paper actually claims in a recent article about Oscar publicists that “because Barry Dale Joseph is working on Slumdog Millionaire, the slumdog underdog, already nominated for a Golden Globe, has become the favorite.” Reality check: sure, his real name is Johnson (not Joseph), he works for ID PR, and he’s an okay flack. But he reps Fox Searchlight films so the guy is already working with frontrunner gold at awards time (like past pics he’s done Oscar campaigns for, Juno and Little Miss Sunshine). Now, let him turn barely talked about In Bruges into a winner – and I’ll be really impressed.

Ah, IN BRUGES, the best movie of 2008 that no one noticed (including me, who had it out from Netflix for about 3 months until I finally put it in). Absolutely brilliant and the best thing Colin Farrell has EVER done.
I saw “In Bruges” last February and no other English language film has topped it yet. It has the best combo of writing/directing, acting and production work of any film made in English this year. I don’t think Martin McDonagh and company could have improved on their work one iota and that is how you weigh a film. That same standard is why it was so difficult to watch “Crash” win a Best Picture against the great accomplishment that was “Brokeback Mountain”.
Slumdog is topping critics lists because it’s actually a great film. Not because of hype or PR…
Add me to the In Bruges Lovefest. Great film and absolutely Farrell’s best work. It deserved a far better fate. And what can I say about the extras on the DVD… absolutely classic!
Word. In Bruges is in my top five this year. Great script and performances.
I’ve been calling In Bruges the best movie of the year since February. I’m on TDK’s bandwagon, but I would gladly vote for In Bruges for Best Picture over TDK.
It’s not completely overlooked, though. It’s actually doing quite well as far as awards go for a movie that was released in February without ANY promotion.
His name is actually Barry Dale Johnson and while he’s an excellent publicist, Slumdog is an extraordinary pic, and should be recognized for awards with or without the help and hype of publicists, advertising, and the Fox studio machine.
The best part of the WA Post story and this recap is that Barry Dale Joseph is actually BARRY DALE JOHNSON. Guess not that many people know him after all.
Dunno what planet the Washington Post reporter resides upon but I can say that MediaPost says the WaPo and the Baltimore Sun are combining forces to cover the Baltimore Washington corridor to help meet the tough economic times for media. Sun’s editor is leaving to teach journalism, not sure what the WaPo’s editor is going onto but he’s leaving as well.
Of course when they write puff pieces on entertainment flacks (remember we are talking DC here not LA so entertaiment news seems pretty lightweight compared to political, government & international news that is the bread & butter of WaPo) it would be nice if they hired reporters who could at least get the *names* of the flacks right.
How does the old saw about publicity go…doesn’t matter if its good or bad just so long as they spell your name right. So whether this was meant as actual reporting or just a reprint of a press release as ‘news’ this story fails.
Anyone still wonder why they throw out Oscar-bait in December?
IN BRUGES was the funniest, smartest and coolest crime-comedy (tied with THE BANK JOB, actually) I’ve seen this year … or in a long time. Then again, BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU’RE DEAD got overlooked as well as did many interesting and well made films in the past.
SLUMDOG exploits a well known (usually associated with Roma and – in case of the Latika’s story – Eastern European) scheme/abuse, so that didn’t hold any surprises. I would have liked it to get more into the workings of the slums (i.e. paying rent for what amounts to four metal walls) or Jamal’s job as a chai-wallah in the call center. Which reminded me….
As much as I like the (mainstream and exploitative) SLUMDOG, I wish audiences would also find the most relevant OUTSOURCED, as entertaining and funny as it is honest. It nailed my past experience as a Westerner in/with India uncannily well and gives new insights into the workings of globalization.
Barry Dale Johnson is the best publicist in the business by a long shot!
