There was a lot of headscratching when Sony moved Seven Pounds from December 12th to December 19th (after Paramount moved Benjamin Button to December 25th), especially when only one studio tentpole opened last weekend. Without a date change, Seven Pounds could have had two full weeks almost to itself. Yet Sony claims "we always wanted that date" to release Seven Pounds the same week that Will's 2006 The Pursuit Of Happyness opened big before Xmas. But a rival studio with special knowledge of the situation tells me the date change was really because Will didn't want to hurt his son Jaden's new movie The Day The Earth Stood Still. (Jaden starred in The Pursuit Of Happyness with his dad, and has a major role in the Fox film that opened December 12th.) This is a recurring Smith family problem. You may recall that, over the summer, Will's Hancock came out the same weekend as his daughter Willow's Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. "I told her, 'Daddy loves you sweetie, but I gots to stomp you at the box office,' " Will recounted at the time. But Hancock became a blockbuster, and Kittredge underperformed at the box office. So Will didn't want to crush another of his children's pics even if they're targeted to different audiences. Who says there aren't family values in Hollywood? But at the expense of the movie's business?

another testament to why Will Smith is the biggest star in the world. He’s easily the most likable of the A-listers.
Well done. Lead by example. Talented family. He deserves an Oscar for at least his business ethics.
How can we commend Smith for this (if the story is in fact true)? What about the countless people who rely on 7 lbs performing well at the box office? Should they all have to settle for a less commercially successful project just so that Smith’s son doesn’t get his feelings hurt? Something isn’t right in this picture.
Likable? Will Smith is a pompous blowhard of Himalayan proportions.
Has he ever taken a role in which he hasn’t been a hero of some sorts? This is obviously indicative of someone with a severe case of abject narcissism.
I swear I think he has to wear a cockring to prevent priapism because dwelling on his own sense of greatness must make him interminably horny.
I wish some witch would curse him with Bell’s Palsy, anything to wipe that smug, aren’t-I_great look off his goddamned face.
But he’s so bland, so insipid, so devoid of any substance, I guess I understand why America is so in love with him as much as he’s in love with himself.
Good on Smith. He can afford to have a film underperform. He’s had what, like eight hits in a row?
How can Will and his wife in good conscience put their kids through the f—ed up ego-driven meat grinder that is the Hollywood industry at such a young age?? It’s not like the kid will ever need the money. And it results in weird situations like this one. Seems like a bad idea to me. And what’s with that business about ensuring that Jaden had to “AUDITION” for his part in Happyness. I dunno, everything I read about this Will Smith guy creeps me out somehow… every interview sounds like 100% bullshit.
Apparently he gives a lot to charity… BUT … that includes a few $cientology charities… urgh.
I totally agree with confused. A good father puts his kids first, true. but a good studio exec should tell that good father to go fuck himself when layoffs, downsizing etc are about at every turn and that dad manipulates a rare advantage during a December release to the tune of millions of dollars.
If Will Smith introduces his children to the adult world of child acting, there are ups and there are downs and he should find a way to support his children during the down times as opposed to pad their smiles at the expense of other peoples livelihoods.
but thats just me.
Will Smith didn’t want to get his ass handed at the box office despite TDTES’s crappy reviews. Hmm, so now he’s concerned about overshadowing his son’s film but not his daughter’s? More like how much value the family can bring to the family.
Has to be one of the most overrated stars in recent memory. Just because he’s “boxoffice,” doesn’t make him an actor. I mean, seriously…did you see I Am Legend???
Family values? Give me a break! Egomaniacal fraud is more like it. Those two are the Charles Laughton & Elsa Lanchester of tinseltown, if you know what I mean. No wonder he’s besties Tom, er, Cruise.
Nepotism much? Can’t people in Hollywood let their kids be kids instead of putting them to work in the proverbial sweat shop so they can make a few bucks off them? Will and Jada have their kids working all over town and I can’t help but think Abigail Breslin (who stars in a new movie seemingly ever couple of months) would surely like to sleep in one morning instead of having to get up at 5am to go to the set.
Every big star has a bubble that burst. They have a big hit that sucks but makes $$ on track record and star power. Hancock anyone? Then the next film takes them down.
Seven Pounds is looking like: Last Action Hero, Vanilla Sky, Meet Dave and F.I.S.T.
And yes I Am Legend sucked ass times infinity.
Like I said, “the next film takes them down.”
