Steve McPherson has been wanting ABC Studios brought under his control for a very long time, as I’d previously reported back in September. See my What’s Really Going On At ABC Studios…
DISNEY-ABC TELEVISION GROUP ANNOUNCES ORGANIZATIONAL RESTRUCTURE
ABC ENTERTAINMENT AND ABC STUDIOS TO BE HEADED BY STEPHEN McPHERSON
MARK PEDOWITZ TO BECOME SENIOR ADVISOR TO THE OFFICE OF THE CO-CHAIRMAN, REPORTING TO ANNE SWEENEY
Thursday, January 22, 2009 — (Burbank, CA) Responding to the changing realities of the entertainment landscape, and addressing an opportunity to streamline the creative process, ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios will be operated as a coordinated business unit entitled ABC Entertainment Group, it was announced today by Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney-Media Networks and president, Disney-ABC Television Group. This newly formed unit will be managed by President Stephen McPherson, who had previously served as president, ABC Entertainment. Mark Pedowitz, former president, ABC Studios, has moved into a new role as senior advisor to the Office of the Co-Chairman, where he will work alongside Ms. Sweeney on a myriad of evolving business, labor relations and emerging media issues.
In commenting on the announcement, Ms. Sweeney stated, “The landscape of our business, and an opportunity to coalesce the creative process dictated this change in structure. By operating these units in a coordinated fashion, we’ll be able to present the industry with a unified, cohesive creative vision for ABC programming, which will serve us well as we move forward.” She continued, “Thanks to the quality of leadership and professional excellence exhibited by both Steve and Mark, we are able to implement this change and ensure that a smooth integration occurs. Mark’s years of experience on both the business and creative sides of the equation make him the perfect person to have in a key advisory position, especially with the multitude and complexity of the issues facing our industry today. And there is no one more passionate about the creative process, with as much proven business acumen, as Steve. This combination is why I’m so excited about this new management structure, and what it means for the future of the Disney-ABC Television Group.”
The newly formed ABC Entertainment Group will combine ABC Studios and ABC Entertainment, with all operations of the two separate units reporting to Mr. McPherson. The new division’s primary mandate will be to develop and produce compelling programming for broadcast on ABC. However, when appropriate, the studio will look for outside opportunities. The successful partnership between ABC Studios and ABC Entertainment prior to this announcement has delivered some of the most successful, talked-about and evolutionary series on television today, including “Desperate Housewives,” “Lost,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Ugly Betty” and “Brothers & Sisters.” Mr. McPherson will spend the next few months integrating the units, with input from Mr. Pedowitz.
Mr. McPherson, who had previously served as president of the studio when it was named Touchstone Television and developed “Desperate Housewives,” “Lost” and “Grey’s Anatomy” prior to assuming oversight of the network, commented, “I’m thrilled and honored that Anne has entrusted me once again with the Studio, and I’m looking forward to discovering ways in which the studio-network relationship, which has been pretty impressive to date, can be even more potent and successful going forward.”
Mr. Pedowitz, whose four-plus year oversight of ABC Studios resulted in some of the most successful and prolific creative development in its history, added, “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to achieve at ABC Studios over the past few years – from venturing into first-run syndication with ‘Legend of the Seeker’ to producing for cable with the hits ‘Kyle XY’ and ‘Army Wives’ to developing some of the new hits on ABC. I look forward to advising Anne on the major issues and challenges facing us as a company.”

Well S. has done very well on the net side, so he should definitely be given a chance on the other. He’s put in his dues.
May God have mercy on their souls.
Why again would they give more responsibility to a man whose network is failing? Who pulls plugs on shows before they can air, who alternately micromanages and then disengages from a group of unempowered execs, who cannot launch a comedy, who is universally hated by his staff and the community at large, and who is called by Bob Eiger “bi-polar and crazy?” Why again?
mark should be happy. Hes building a huge veranda right outside his office. Nice to see where the $$ is going.
This just makes it easier for them to cheat their showrunners out of their rightful profits, inviting the invevitable lawsuits that every other newly-combined studio/network has had to contend with. Three cheers for vertical integration! They save money by doing this but they wind up losing money with all the lawsuits that result from it.
McPherson is a hump. The network is dying like an old dog. All those great shows from 5 years ago ain’t so great anymore. Some even unwatchable. And then there’s Jimmy Kimmel Live. Lord what an epic piece of place-holder shit. C’mon Stevie Mac – time to trim the late night fat, fuck.
My condolences.
Steve mcpherson is like the george bush of network television: completely and utterly incompetant. He’s run ABC into the ground, he has completely alienated his underlings to the point that everyone is afraid to speak to him (less they say something he disagrees with and he throws something at them) and has everyone working from a place of fear, which is a great place to come from when trying to work through the creative process like say DEVELOPING A TV SHOW!
oh and has anyone watched greys anatomy lately? complete crap! (and i loved season 1) and then there’s according to jim? yes, people it’s still on! Thats what doof ball Steve thinks is funny. I’m not hopeful for the future of comedy at ABC. Condolences to anyone who is developing a comedy there, but if it’s any consolation, it wont get on the air.
Why does life continue to reward rank mediocrity? Hey moron McPherson and fat disgusting Fred Flintstone on Vicodin looking talentless lump of shit Jimmy Kimmel, that means you! As smart is the new cool in the White House, let’s hope it eventually trickles down to ABC’s comedy division. In the meantime, let’s welcome Cousin Frank to the stage with today’s wacky news clip we saw on The Soup four days ago! BARF!!!!!
Not only is McPherson one of the least-liked and more importantly least-respected people in Hollywood – Pedowitz is one of the best-liked and most-respected.
Go figure.
Uh, you folks act like it is more important to create hit shows than it is to kiss up to your superior.
SM is great at nurturing his relationship with AS. Mark and AS not so much.
Until you learn what is important in this town, you’ll never succeed.
The facts are these:
McPherson was at Touchstone under the aegis of the evil Lloyd Braun.
While so imprisoned, the energetic McPherson discovered two wonderful shows called “CSI” and “Scrubs” But the Lloyd didn’t “get” those shows and so let them go where they both became hits.
The Lloyd was dispatched but not before dropping a ton of cash on a weird unfinished show about some people on an island. McPherson was saddled with the pilot but found a way tpo make it work.
Along with “Lost” he also found a quirky show about an ugly girl, another about some horny doctors and a show about some desperate women on a cul-de-sac.
These shows saved the net and brought back some quality to TV overall.
Even though he canceled my favorite show, he brought it back for another season and tried find an audience for it.
He ruined “Dirty Sexy Money” and I can’t defend him for that but overall the man’s batting average is pretty good.
There are some pretty nasty things in these posts about Steve. While he’s not my favorite person these days, you cannot say he’s a bad executive or isn’t good at is job. He’s got taste and he fights for shows that no one else would. Okay so he can’t judge comedy very well but these days no one’s slapping that hog the right way.
Go Steve!
Lost – McPherson didn’t get how it could be a series at all; he didn’t get it, and it was Braun’s own idea anyway that he pitched himself.
Ugly Betty – McPherson didn’t like it, actually he hated it and didn’t want to put it on the air.
DH- on the air thanks to Susan Lynne, that was her baby all the way.
There hasn’t been one real hit developed at abc, for abc, since mcpherson’s been the head of the ntwk. the one show that could have been a breakout hit…he was the only one who didn’t like it and it never saw the light of day…FBW. Yes, the only thing he’s been competent at or consistent with is sucking up to AS. If only he was as dedicated with taking his meds.
I don’t understand all this animosity towards McP. After all, under his run, ABC has produces such epic shows as The Great American Dream Vote, In Case of Emergency, Big Day, Knights of Prosperity, What About Brian, Day Break, Show Me The Money, Men In Trees, Six Degrees, The 9, Help Me Help You, Sons And Daughters, Hot Properties, The Night Stalker, Jake In Progress, Emily’s Reasons Why Not, Rodney, Freddy, The War At Home, In Justice, Miracle Workers, American Inventor, Crumbs, Commander In Chief, Invasion,October Road, The Evidence, Notes From The Underbelly, The Benefactor, Life of Luxury, Blind Justice, Eyes, Life As We Know It, Complete Savages, Carpoolers, Big Shots, Women’s Murder Club, Dance Wars, and Cavemen.
I respectfully disagree Mr. “Anon” (if that is your real name)
Lost was unfinished and Mr. McPherson passed it to Mr. Abrams whom found the talents young Mr. Lindelof. Also, The Lloyd DID NOT pitch the idea for “Lost.” As any real fan knows “Lost” was the creation of a man named Jeffrey Lieber and was originnaly entitled “Nowhere.” (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Lieber)
As to “Ugly Betty” I don’t know if he liked it or not but since it ended up on the air, obviously he yielded to popular sentiment (which goes against the very dictatorial tag you try to hang on him, by the way) and it got on the air.
You can’t have it both ways, ether he finds these hits, or he supports his people. One of these things must be true.
As to Desperate Housewives, see paragraphs above.
A President of a network has to be the bad guy many times. He is the hero when he succeeds and the goat when he doesn’t. Subordinates can be gung ho for shows that end up on the Prez’s tab at the end of the day.
When Kevin Reilly got fired from NBC and they hired Ben Silverman, Steve was the only guy to publicly stand up for his friend. Imagine that, standing up for a rival based on friendship– in this business!
No evil people this is not a bad person and shame on you for starting rumors about his health.
Go Steve!
Bravo Big Fan! Brilliantly crafted. But lest you forget Stevie-Mac’s inexplicable support of Jimmy Kimmel Live. That money pit hasn’t made the network a thin dime and is harder to watch straight through than a sick dog taking a wet shit.
Daisey Pushr:
Some good points, especially regarding “Lost” about Lieber first pitching the series “Nowhere” with Spelling Television, a fact that ABC likes to drown out, and some former disgruntled execs like to change the story on. But you see Lieber’s created by credit weekly for a reason.
But, McPherson has been rumored to take mental health medications. Can’t say I blame him, it’s a stressful job. He should be credited with their successes and failures, but ultimately, ABC did bounce back under his watch. He has had trouble launching new shows of late so we’ll see.
What I’d really like to know, are which execs are staying over there and which execs are going? Thoughts? Nikki? Others?
