Every day my “inbox” keeps filling with more in-house memos about staff cuts at the studios and networks. This latest whammy has Disney’s ABC Television Group axing 4% of the total workforce all the way up into the executive ranks. About 200 open positions won’t be filled, and another 200 staffers will be let go. Here’s the memo from Disney-ABC TV Group prez Anne Sweeney:

After months of making hard decisions across our businesses to help us adjust to a weakening economy, we’re now faced with the harsh reality of having to eliminate jobs in some areas.
This was not an easy decision, nor one made lightly. The people affected today are our friends and colleagues, and we are doing all we can for them and their families during what we know will be a difficult transition.
Change is never easy, and becomes even harder to embrace during times of turbulence and uncertainty. With that in mind, I’ve asked each business leader to reach out to their group with more information on this announcement as soon as possible.
I realize this is an extremely difficult day for everyone in our group. But despite the challenges before us, I remain confident and optimistic about our future, because you really are the best team in the business.

I heard the Bill Carter generated rumor about Jimmy Kimmel Live possibly moving to 11:30 to compete with Conan’s Tonight Show. ABC, if this move happens, you will go down in history as the world’s dumbest network. NIGHTLINE is more important than ever, given the current upheaval around the globe. PLEASE don’t confuse that unwatchable and repetitive piece of shit Kimmel show with something people care about. LOOK AT THE RATINGS. Keep the 400 staffers on board and cancel Kimmel today instead!!!
Now I am sure someone will say this is a stunt to try and get SAG to take the deal ……………….. C’mon I know you want to.
It’s not a stunt for SAG LOL. Who is in and who is out at ABC Network and ABC Studios in terms of current and development execs? C’mon people…
Kimmel sucks. I can’t watch his show. The man is not funny at all…
Of course they’re laying people off. It’s the only way they can afford to pay Iger $30M a year?
This is so obviously a stunt to try and get SAG to take the deal.
And that’s just the TV side, what about the studio/features people…
Gotta love that last paragraph… she remains confident and optimistic about the future?! Easy, seeing that her ass is still in the chair. And yeah “you really are the best team in the business”… except for those schmucks who are no longer ON THE TEAM! But for the rest of us it’s just another day in paradise at the mouse of house. Blaergh.
I interned for ABC-Disney over the past summer and have been told to basically just sit tight, and see what opportunities come out of this. It will be interesting.
Dear Disney and Warner Brothers, I kindly invite you to FUCK THE HELL OFF!! Don’t get me wrong, I love you dearly, but really, go fuck yourselves for being so typically spineless and ethically corrupt while taking advantage of the ‘weakening economy’?? What, you don’t think canning people is one of the major reasons it’s weakening? Corporate greed is really coming to light folks. But there’s hope, notice how many people Google laid off? A whopping 100. All of them recruiters. Here’s a company that is clearly sending a message to others Corps. Stop firing and stop hiring. Other forward thinking execs (like Richard Branson) are publicly lamenting these transparent fear based tactics. Every time I talk to one of my rich friends I hear more about the number of millions they lost in stocks. Oh boo fukin hoo. It’s called LUXURY PROBLEMS U ASSHOLES!! Be happy you have them to loose. So you have a few less vacations to Tibet and Fiji. Try losing your house, your IRA, OR YOUR JOB when your over 60!! If your able to put food in your mouth and have a roof over your head then shut the fuck up. If you have billions in revenue, god help your deeply twisted moral compass.
Too bad the studios didn’t try putting on programming that people wanted to watch. Too late now – most of the viewers who aren’t watching TV now aren’t going to come back. They’ve found better sources of entertainment.
Well that’s enlightening…… management believes all studio and network functions can be handled by interns. That would certainly go a long way in explaining the sorry state of this business.
If it’s that few people, I assume it’s meant to change the share price as it won’t have any big change to the bottom line.
Next week is big financial news week for media conglomerates.
Disney posts results Tuesday, Time Warner AOL Wednesday & News Corp Thursday.
