Michael Smith is the high-profile decorator for Steven Spielberg, Rupert Murdoch, Rob Reiner, Brian Grazer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cindy Crawford, among others. His latest client is the Obama family to design their private quarters in the White House. Former House & Garden editor Dominique Browning, writing in today’s Wall Street Journal, calls Smith “a surprising pick” because “I doubt even he can remember when he last accepted a $100,000 limit — that’s what is earmarked for the presidential family quarters — unless that was the budget for window treatments.” Yet Michelle Obama’s press office praised Smith’s “family-focused and affordable approach”. On the other hand, private donations will subsidize this interior decorating project. And, no, it wasn’t Hollywood that made the Smith intro for the Obamas; it came via Chicago.

3-to-1 that this story WON’T wind-up as a quip on Doonesbury.
I know I did preached about the ‘value-chain’ analysis sometime ago when studios was spending millions promoting their movies (yet firing staffs at the same time) that would benefited others.
But for White House to spend all this money to decorate the home that is already decorated many times over is just simply unacceptable. I mean, here is the President asking to release billions of dollars to help revive the economy, the least he could do is to donate the money to the poor families who are in financial troubles.
And all the private firms paying for the Chinas and decorations, shouldn’t Obama use the money to help the charities and poors? The Singapore’s Senir Minister (Lee Kuan Yew) donated half a million dollars of his salary to the charity to help them tied over this difficult times. If a leader with nation of less than 4 million can do this, why can’t the President of 200 Million do the same?
No doubt his experience decorating on a shoestring will bring us all the “Michael Smith Home Decor” line at Target.
In times like these, we should all be dropping $100,000 to redecorate our temporary residences.
I for one am going to enjoy watching Obama do all the same shit every politician does and watch his suport turn on him for being human.
THe grumbling has already started in the black community who watch him hire an almost lily white staff and all of his half white friends.

Note that Smith is pictured with two standard poodles…does this give us a hint about the all-important choice of a New Dog? And people — decorating the President’s house for 100k is a hard job…checked the price of materials lately? Are some of you suggesting that Michelle pop out to Wurtz Brothers to buy and old sofa and whip up new slipcovers herself? Concentrate on real profligate waste — where are the billions lost in Iraq reconstruction, for example? At least we’ll know what the 100k is buying!
You have to really reach to find a reason to criticize the Obamas for this. But still the nitwits try. Do you people have any clue what former First Ladies spent on redecorating the White House? This is nothing for a huge building like that. This isn’t a 3BR house in the burbs. Redecorating and updating is done every several years and this time it’s Michelle’s turn. Laura Bush just got delivery of the $400K worth of official White House china she had to order. It happened to need replacing during her tenure. The White House has to host royalty and heads of state. It needs to look good for our own good. And don’t forget hundreds of people work there and thousands of visitors tramp through there every year. You really think the floors and furniture holds up to all that?

Just look at what he’s done on his first few days of presidency, and he loves and is in charge of America???
