So this was a hot book but it’s been a cold movie in development at Paramount. Two years ago, Brad Pitt wanted the project for his Plan B production company. Then a year ago, Julia Roberts attached herself to play the lead and develop it. And most recently, Ryan Murphy came on to direct. But now Paramount is about to put the project in turnaround, and Sony is about to pick it up. Some are telling me that Paramount will chalk up another Twilight turnaround humiliation. Others say that Sony will overspend for a chick flick that should cost only $25M to make, is currently budgeted at $60M, sends out 15% of the gross off the top, would have to earn $150M worldwide to make money, and ends up with a 1-quadrant movie starring a has-been actress helmed by a mediocre director. How I love it when Hollywood studios bitchslap one another!
The book by Elizabeth Gilbert is subtitled, “One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia” and the content is just that. One big fan of the soul-searching travelogue tells me that Paramount “didn’t get it. It’s a girls’ book, and they didn’t know what it was. All of them, from Brad Grey to John Lesher, looked at it and said no.” Another tells me, ”They’re nuts. They’re only making guy movies, and I don’t know how they can ignore this best-seller after the success of Mamma Mia and Sex And The City.”
On the hand, sources tell me that after the exec championing the project, Pam Abdy, left the studio, Paramount bigwigs decided that the pic should only cost $25M but was too hard to make cheaply because it takes place all over the world and therefore the budget would balloon to $60M with 15% of the gross out the door. As a source put it to me, “The concern is it’s a 1-quadrant movie that would have to make over $150M worldwide to make money. So my question for you is: when was the last time a Julia Roberts-lead movie grossed that much? (And Oceans Eleven doesn’t count.)”
The fact is that Paramount bought the book initially because of its relationship with Pitt’s Plan B, which felt that because Eat Pray Love had sold well in America that a movie would have built-in appeal. Even so, I heard Paramount’s marketing department doesn’t believe this is another Momma Mia or Sex And The City and turned thumbs-down on its commercial viability. And there’s thinking that 41-year-old Julia Roberts is too old to play the 31-year-old lead. Plus, the biggest hesitation was Ryan Murphy, who failed to make the transition from TV showrunner to film director with the stillborn Running With Scissors. “Had some genius filmmaker been doing it, then Lesher would take the leap of faith and hope for alchemy on an untraditional real-life narrative,” my source explains.
Still, putting any film in turnaround is a risk. Look at Twilight. “You never want to put anything in turnaround because it’s ‘schmuck insurance’ so you don’t give anyone the opportunity to make yourself look bad. But Lesher saw that Brad Pitt was very passionate about it. So he’s doing a good thing and being a friend to the project and letting Sony have it.”
It was Julia Roberts who personally brought the project to Amy Pascal. And I hear Sony still is worried that Paramount may want to keep it, especially because of this publicity. But I also hear Paramount’s mind is made up. Now we all wait to see who gets the last laugh.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

It’s a mediocre book at best; self absorbed, whiny, shallow.
I have a hard time seeing any movie version rise above the source material and making money.
Really? Ryan Murphy? After the disastrous “Running with Scissors?” Ouch. This smells already.
Speaking as a woman who loves herself a smart chick flick, if the movie of Eat, Pray, Love is anything at all like the book itself, it will be grating and lack any sense of irony or humor — a colossally saccharine snooze fest all around. Just put this project out of its misery. Seriously.
Paramount is smart. This isn’t a chick flick, it’s a chick searching for her soul flick. Chicks don’t want to see chick empowerment, they want to see Chick and Dick hooking up, and all the variations, thereof.
Amy Pascal doesn’t have a clue about chick films. Witness, BEWITCHED. Ouch. And what of “The Two Julia’s”…the latest Nora Ephron extravaganza? Haven’t heard a peep, because, me thinks it needs work.
Hey Brad – you escaped a costly error. And Amy, if you’re making this, maybe you can get Julia to sign on for My Best Friend’s Divorce or some other sequel cuz unless it’s a COMEDY, those girls aint coming so fast.
I reluctantly admit that I read this book. But Roberts is perfect for it; the age of the woman isn’t as important as (wait for it) her journey. Plus, the female empowerment storyline will speak to the Sex and the City crowd.
You know, in the old days Julia knew how to pick movies. Now I understand she has become an “arteest”, but maybe she should take a look in the rearview mirror and start choosing the kind of movies that got her to superstardom. And if she needs advice now. If she’s at a crossroads – take it now. DON’T DO EAT, PRAY, LOVE. And if you have to, if it’s some soul enriching process, then whatever you do DON’T do it with the hack who brought you “Running with Scissors.”
How about Soderburgh, or Nichols (although he’s soooo pretentious), or anyone else that matters? But Ryan Murphy? Who sold you that bill of goods….I wonder.
Hey Nikki – I think I smell a rat. Follow – Julia Roberts repped by Kevin Huvane. Ryan Murphy repped by Kevin Huvane. Can you spell packaging? Hey Julia, go back to Toni Howard while you still can.
Hey Nikki – find some sources who’ve actually read the script because it’s quite good. In fact — it’s WAY BETTER than the book and it’s going to surprise a lot of people. Paramount never had a clue about what to do with the project from the beginning. This is the best thing that could happen to the project. This is a role Julia will shine in.
How long has Roberts been with CAA?
I feel like her career started going downhill when she left Toni Howard and ICM but I could be wrong about the timeline.
Anyway, this book was a crapfest. I am a woman and loves me a chick flick but this is a bad idea. Just let it stand as an overrated NYT bestseller.
And Julia Roberts is just not on anyone’s radar anymore. Not in terms of headlining some blockbuster chick film. Her time has come and gone for that.
“Running with Scissors” was produced by Plan B and distributed by Sony, that’s how this deal came together. Also, Amy Pascal has great instincts when it comes to picking stories. Although the book itself gives me pause, if Amy sees it working as a film then it most likely will.
Um, last four “Julia Roberts-lead” movies at the worldwide box office:
“Closer” (2004) $116 mil (a whopping $82 mil of that from overseas)
“Mona Lisa Smile” (2003) $141 mil
“America’s Sweethearts” (2001) $138 mil
“The Mexican” (2001) $148 mil
No, none are over $150 mil but they’re not that far off. Before those it was “Erin Brockovich,” “Runaway Bride, “Notting Hill.”
Woman takes some time off to have kids and all of a sudden she’s “washed-up”??
“Eat, Pray” is probably a minor risk at a $60 million budget, but considering the built-in name value of this book, Roberts is as about a safe a bet as possible to get it where it needs to be at the box office.
Ryan Murphy as director is another story…
Ryan is good at making interesting television, his shows have been very entertaining.
The script is amazing and Murphy is as talented as they come. Don’t tell me Julia can’t headline a movie based on a best selling book, that’s idiocy. A lot of lonely people in here making their voices heard.
I think Julia Roberts is ripe for a comeback. Put her in the right movie and it would be huge.
I agree with an earlier posting. Julia needs to look in the rearview mirror and make movies like she used to. Notting Hill, Runaway Bride, Mona Lisa Smile, My Best Friend’s Wedding. I don’t want to see her in Full Frontal, or Charlie Wilson’s War looking all botoxed and made up. I want to see her in movies about women, for women. And if it’s true that she’s no longer manged by Tony Howard, maybe she should be so that she can start making better choices.
Eat, Pray, Love feels like a small movie not deserving of her star status.
I think the closest thing to compare this to would be UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN.
Domestic gross: 43.6
Intl: 15.2
Factor in Julia and maybe double that?
So let’s just say 120 million worldwide.
With a 120 gross, that’s actually about 70 back to the studio.
Less Julia’s first dollar gross. Let’s lop off another 10 or so.
That leaves about 60.
SO deduct 60 million budget. 40 to market.
Oh crap. You’re in the hole $40 million.
Okay. Let’s say you sell 3 million dvds. A fair estimate for a middling release.
Okay, that’s about 60 million.
Less marketing (again) and distribution and manufacturing.
Let’s say that’s about 15 million.
So now add the 45 to the theatrical run of -45.
SO that leaves you with a big fat goose egg.
Okay fine. Add on tv sales, PPV, cable etc. Let’s say you get 5 more million.
But if you’re gonna get that picky then you need to deduct studio overhead. That might be $5 million.
SO back to zero.
SO at 120 world wide, you really don’t make any money.
OKAY, MORONS! JULIA WASN’T MANAGED BY TONI HOWARD. HER AGENT FOREVER WAS ELAINE GOLDSMITH. THE TWO OF THEM WERE A TEAM SINCE MYSTIC PIZZA, AND THEN ELAINE BECAME HER PRODUCING PARTNER. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT BEFORE YOU CRAP ALL OVER PEOPLE. THEN YOU CAN CRAP. KUDOS TO THE POSTING GIVING JULIA’S BOX OFFICE (AND THAT’S WITHOUT INFLATED PRICES). I DON’T THINK ANYONE CAN TOUCH HER, AND YET EVERYONE’S SO QUICK TO TEAR DOWN. SHAMEFUL.
A has-been actress. What are you talking about? Do you know how many fans she has? For all the movies she has opened in her career, her box office, this is how you characterize her now. This can’t be how all the studio executives think of her now. If Julia wants to, she can and will have a big comeback. She’s done it before. I do think she needs another agent though.
Dr. Phil should direct this…
I’d like to respond to GB. “Closer,” “”America’s Sweethearts” and “The Mexican” were all considered domestic disappointments. None of these films can be viewed as hits. At least two of these films (“The Mexican” and “America’s Sweethearts”) were awful and misconceived and should never have been made. “Mona Lisa Smile” was six years ago. Unless what Julia Roberts finds at the end of “Eat Pray Love” is Richard Gere, I don’t think the film’s success will be a sure thing. I also think that, outside of “The Da Vinci Code”, Harry Potter and “Twilight”, there is no such thing as “built in name value of a book” when it comes to adapting for the screen. I’d also like to say that I think DMS is exactly right in his/her very smart calculation.
This is to the comment made by joshreader. How was America’s Sweethearts a domestic disappointment when it made a little over 90 million and opened at 30 million? Why do you also insinuate that the only successful movie Julia, has done or will ever do,is with Richard Gere?
Jan — it’s not the gross, it’s the revenue after the star’s salaries, production costs, and marketing etc.
I think this movie will not be successful. First, it’s a recession, and spending on movies is both discretionary and expensive. A ticket at Friday-Saturday night can easily top $12 a person. Second, no guy is going to pay for this on date night, he’ll go for the traditional action-adventure movie that both entertains him and gets his date closer. Third, the DVD sales cratering means that success at theatrical release is critical, no longer can studios expect to earn back costs during DVD release.
This recession is not going away any time soon, and consumer spending is cratering. Movies that succeed will have to draw from all four quadrants, not the sort of niche stuff that studios got away with in boom times. Movies will also have to cost a lot less, with cheaper actors and production costs.
Some rental places are renting DVDs at $1. Wow. Entertainment is a commodity. That’s reality.
I think this movie makes money with a no-name actress made fast and cheap, but that’s not the project now.
I’m wondering when the first Studio will fail, like GM or Chrysler or the NYT.
Whiskey said: “I think this movie will not be successful. First, it’s a recession, and spending on movies is both discretionary and expensive. A ticket at Friday-Saturday night can easily top $12 a person.”
I agree. And how about the fact that during a recession, not a lot of people will identify with being given a near six figure salary to spend a year to go find yourself on three continents like the author of Eat Pray Love?
Ryan Murphy is the love of Plan B. They benighted him a genius over there. Ouch.
Paramount doesn’t want to make movies that have women front and center that is clear. And has been for quite a while.
But all that doesn’t mean Eat, Pray, Love couldn’t be a great movie for Julia Roberts. Somewhere else.
The book never should have been set up at Paramount by Plan B and Ryan should never have been attached as he is truly not right for it.
Universal, Fox Searchlight, Miramax…these are places this project would have a chance…and someone other than Murphy…
Running with Scissors. Year of the Dog. Jesse James. Mighty Heart. These movies more than Departed, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Troy, movies which Plan B was kissed into, represent Plan B’s respectable artistic yet uncommercial taste. Eat Pray Love seems like it belongs in the first group.
