Ricardo Montalban was also an outspoken activist on behalf of Latinos in showbiz. In 1970, he founded the non-profit organization Nosotros to improve the image of Latinos in the entertainment industry, promote employment in front of and behind the camera, and to provide educational opportunities for Hispanics in the Performing Arts.
What a tribute to Patrick McGoohan's unforgettable performances in the British TV series Danger Man (retitled Secret Agent in the U.S.) and then its semi-sequel The Prisoner (my all-time favorite TV series) that not just a Hollywood movie (Universal) but also a TV series (AMC) are recreating his misadventures as Number 6.

As a 23 year old crew-kid, I worked on Fantasy Island. He would come in on his days off to greet the guest stars. Five years after I left the show, I came back for one day’s work. He came right over to me and greeted me, remembering my name.
Is there anyone like him still working in this town?
RIP
He’s dead?@! So smooth and suave that Montalban.
The most moving thing is that Montalban’s wife of 63 years, Georgiana, died just over a year ago. Now they can be together for eternity…
And while is activism is worthy of note, this sci-fi fan would like to pay tribute to his performance in the title role of ‘The Wrath of Kahn’. It could so easily have been so OTT it became an instant camp classic, but it ended up being curiously moving.
RIP you class act.
Fantastic actor. He had grace and taste. RIP.
Thank you for acknowledging his passing. It’s hard enough for Latinos in this industry…
Kind regards.
Resto en paz eterna, o actor noble
I think a real testament to his presence and skill as an actor is in Star Trek 2. His character, Khan, and Shatner’s Kirk never have a scene together.
There is no face to face confrontation between them, just some taunting over communicators, they’re never in the same room.
Any other actor would leave the audience feeling cheated that they didn’t go toe to toe, but Montalban pulled it off with sheer presence.
RIP Ricardo.
With him and Patrick McGoohan gone it’s a dark day for SF/Fantasy fans.
He was a true gentleman and a great actor admired by all who ever saw him.
Rest in Peace
One of the greatest actors of our time is gone. And watch none of the youth obsessed TV networks will probably acknowledge it.
He should have won best supporting Oscar in 1983 for his role as Kahn or at least been nominated.
He was such a kind and impressive person. A true professional and everyone around him was aware they were in the prescence of a star.
God bless this nice kind talented man.
RIP Khan, Mr Roarke. You will be deeply missed.
Senior Ricardo was truly “one of a kind.” Always, always a gentleman…
In the early 80’s I was very fortunate to be one of the main camera operators on “Fantasy Island.” I’ll never forget how upon entering our stage at The Burbank Studios he would individually greet each and every member of the crew and, in the same manner, say goodnight the same way on his way out at the end of the day.
He also was very kind, gracious and supportive of all of the many guest stars we had on set. In the four years I was there I never once heard him raise his voice! (That must be some kind of a record?)
When my wife and I were to be married, out of respect, we sent him an invitation to our wedding never expecting him to attend. But on the morning of July 4th he showed up, driving himself in a white Chrysler convertible outfitted with “fine corinthian leather!”
What a guy…he will be missed by many. RIP “Mr. Roarke.”
We Lost a Great Man with the passing of Patrick McGoohan.
I watched “The Prisoner” when I was 15 yrs. old and What a Impact it made on me.
Way ahead of it’s time. Patrick was showing us where we were headed.
My all time favorite TV series.
GOD Bless You Patrick.
Nobody delivered a line from Moby Dick so well (as Kahn)….
“To the last, I will grapple with thee… from Hell’s heart, I stab at thee! For hate’s sake, I spit my last breath at thee!”
RIP Mr. Montalban, you will be missed…..
McGoohan was a great actor and an enigmatic presence. His contribution to television cannot go unrecoginized.
“The Prisoner” was a unique show that has never been duplicated and has inspired the likes of “The Truman show” and “Lost.” Yet he gave us so many other memorable performances like “Dr. Syn,” “Silver Streak” (where his bad guy character dropped the “N” bomb on Richard Pryor who retaliated by telling PMG he’d “slap the white out of him”), his award winning stage performance in “Brand,” and of course “Braveheart.” He was delicious as the cunning King Edward the Longshanks who threw his son’s gay lover out the window. It was one of his very best performances. How wonderful it was at the end of his career.
He seemd to have a great sense of humor. He even spoofed his Prisoner character on “The Simpsons.” Homer finds himself trapped in the Village along with McGoohan. Just as PMG finally manages to launch a raft to escape, Homer rushes by, knocks PMG over and steals the raft, leaving the Prisoner behind.
He seemed to cherish his privacy which was why he was never on the Hollywood scene although he lived right here in Los Angeles.
Rest in peace, Mr. McGoohan. Yor leave behind a great body of work that we’ll never let us forget you.
“The Prisoner” is your favorite TV series? Careful, Nikki, you may have let it slip that you “do geek” after all.
Patrick McGoohan will always be remembered on screen in the fine underrated film “Ice Station Zebra”. It is one of my favorites and Patrick was outstanding in the flick.
I’d say the best tribute to a classic is not to even consider a re-make. Re-makes are a sign of intellectual Chapter 11, not respect.
Ricardo Montalban and Patrick McGoohan were two of my favorite actors. I also loved The Prisoner and hope the new James Caviezel mini series The Prisoner is true to the spirit of the original.
Ricardo Montalban told his five stages of Hollywood:
1 Who is Ricardo Montalban?; 2 Get me Ricardo Montalban; 3 Get me a Ricardo Montalban type; 4 Get me a young Ricardo Montalban; 5 Who is Ricardo Montalban?
Very funny man!!
